Paully's Picks - 2010 NRL Grand Final

St George Illawarra Dragons v Sydney Roosters

A tremendous game of rugby league awaits us all on Sunday at 5.00pm EST from ANZ Stadium in Homebush.

The minor premiers, St George Illawarra, come into this match with one of the best defensive records ever seen and have based their run for title on this impressive achievement: Try-saving tackles, winning the ruck, excellent wrestling techniques and an overall desire to protect their try line at any cost. Mobile defensive weapons like Neville Costigan and Dean Young have led the way in this regard whilst Beau Scott and Matt Cooper have also lived up to their reputations as defensive specialists. It has all led to the Saints allowing only 2 tries per game over the course of 2010. Remarkable.

The Sydney Roosters, however, have made it this far through outstanding play from their spine. Born again Jake Friend and Todd Carney have combined beautifully with Mitchell Pearce and the walking miracle, Anthony Minichiello. Their attack is creative and makes good use of many weapons in the chook's arsenal. A dominant performance against the Titans last week has given more credit to their defence and this will be the key against the Dragons on Sunday.

So, my very good friends, strap in and get comfortable as this will be a hard fought, nail-biting close encounter of two old rivals. The 2010 premiership will be decided in the final 10 minutes of this match where, historically, the minor premiers have been able to pile on the points in many of their matches when the opposition has been sufficiently destroyed. However on this occasion, I’m tipping that the Roosters get the better of them with an attack that still has legs in the dying moments and carries them to the Telstra Premiership by a feather.

Experience is always a benefit in big games so keep an eye out for Nate Myles and Braith Anasta to lead the way for the Bondi boys, whilst Mark Gasnier and Jeremy Smith will be standouts for the Dragons. Whilst you have your eye on them, keep an eye on Saints fans anywhere around you. They will be half expecting something very very bad to happen and half feeling quietly confident. It is a joy being a Rugby League fan at this time of year and good luck to both clubs on the greatest day, in the Greatest Game of All.

Tip: Roosters 16-12
Clive Churchill Medallist: Anthony Minichiello

Paully's Picks - Finals Week 2

Canberra v Wests Tigers

How quickly fortunes can change in the Greatest Game of All. Last week, the Tigers were 30 seconds away from a huge win... a week off.... and a much needed rest for their many injured players followed by a 'home' semi final to qualify for the big one. Instead, they are heading to our nations capital to face the form team of the competition and the biggest set of forwards in the southern hemisphere in front of 27,000 Green Machine believers. The McIntyre system really bends you over a barrel, doesn't it?

To avoid an end to their season, the Wests Tigers will have to deliver the best performance of their collective careers. They must overcome the heartbreak of last week's loss and a long list of wounded troops. However, let's say they do turn up on Friday night with a full squad.... it probably won't matter anyway. The Raiders are surging and have all the momentum in this match. Unless the visitors get off to a blinding start and put pressure on this young Canberra team, they are in for a long night. Rather, we predict Canberra lead from start to finish and the party begins in Bruce.

Tip: Canberra 30-12
Result:

Eastern Suburbs v Penrith

Make no mistake - the Roosters were unbelievably lucky last week. Granted, they made all the big plays when they needed to and deserve credit for their remarkable victory, but not until Todd Carney took over did they really show any direction in that match. The same can be said for the Panthers - not until they threw away their game plan and played on instinct against the Raiders did they show signs of a being a real semi final football team. Perhaps a symptom of being over-coached?

If Brian Smith hands over the reigns to Pearce and Carney on Saturday night at the SFS, the Panthers are in trouble. If not, then we have another very close game and the Panthers are a chance. We predict the latter unfolds and the visitors stay close until late when Carney realises he can win this game whenever he wants to - and does so. The boys from Penrith do not go quietly though - and this will be another memorable finals match but ultimately, it's Mad Monday time for the Mountain Men.

Tip: Roosters 24-18

Paully's Picks - Finals Week 1

Gold Coast v NZ Warriors

The amount of painkilling injections that league players will take to ensure they get on to the field in the finals is remarkable. Scott Prince basically has a separated shoulder and Luke Bailey has a broken thumb. You'd be shocked if they didn’t play in this match on Friday night as the finals series opens with a beauty. No better example can be found of how important the finals are and to what lengths our NRL stars will go chasing the ultimate prize.

The Titans face the upstart Warriors who present a real danger to them. The visitors do not have many weaknesses and the home side will have to be at their gritty, determined best to outlast the boys from Auckland. They will. The Gold Coast were quite easily dispatched from last years finals and their defence was the major issue; not this time. They are a year older and wiser and the addition of Greg Bird will provide the tenacity and experience they need to get over the Warriors - but only just.

Tip: Gold Coast 21-20
Result: Gold Coast 28-16

Wests v Eastern Suburbs

Chris Lawrence in a huge loss for the Tigers; make no mistake. They might be able to get by without him in the regular season, but when it comes to finals time, players like Lawrence can make a big difference. The Tigers have shown great depth this year and will call on it again through Mitch Brown and whilst Brown is being tested out wide, the Tigers forwards will be in a battle of their own against a Roosters pack with one goal and one goal only, make some room for Pearce and Carney.

Given enough time to pick their spots, the celebrated Roosters halves can cause major damage to the Tigers but this is where experience tells. The likes of Farah and Galloway and Payten and Fulton will stand up and be counted. We predict the Wests forwards make a name for themselves in this match and allow Benji Marshall a chance to produce the kind of magic he is capable of. A brutal battle in the middle and I can't wait. Tigers get home in a violent encounter.

Tip: Wests 19-18
Result: Roosters 19-15

Penrith v Canberra

Another bottler. Semi Final time is truly the most exciting time in a Rugby League season. The upstart Raiders have come a long way this year and along with the Warriors, are the biggest surprise of 2010. The boys from our nation’s capital take their show to the foot of the mountains this Saturday night to face a Penrith team whose form at CUA stadium has been scorching. The Panthers will miss Petero Civoniceva but will welcome the return of Luke Walsh and Luke Lewis.

This should be enough to put an end to the dreams of a young Canberra team lacking the experience required to pull off an upset in this match. The Panthers pull away to a healthy lead early and hold off the fast finishing Raiders. Penrith halfback Walsh finds another way to get his team across the try line and proves that they can score points without kicking. Penrith get a week off and the visitors head home for Mad Monday to ponder a very bright future.

Tip: Penrith 30-20
Result: Canberra 24-22

St George Illawarra v Manly

As Manly captain Jamie Lyon mentioned during the week, this match is a big opportunity for the Sea Eagles to pull off one of the great victories in the clubs history. Ravaged by injury and suspension, up against the minor premiers, facing arguably the best defensive unit in recent memory, and away from home, Manly have it all to do and are understandably 15 point outsiders. It will take a major collapse from the Dragons for the visitors to get over the line here.

Not this week. Saints turn up and defend as they have all year and their attack will benefit from this and a glut of possession. The Eagles fight bravely but to no avail as a fresh Dragons outfit put them to the sword. Interesting to see any evidence of nerves in the home side and how they approach this match after receiving so much criticism over the past year about their September form. We predict they respond by crushing the Eagles to win the clubs first finals match since 2006.

Tip: St George Illawarra 29-10
Result: St George Illawarra 28-0

Paully's Picks - Round 26

Brisbane v Canberra

The mighty green machine have had a wonderful season and are now within a whisker of playing semi final football. A remarkable effort and congratulations must go to David Furner and his coaching staff. However, they still have to beat the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night. A big ask considering Brisbane are playing for pride and the Raiders are slight underdogs.

It won't matter. The Raiders are clearly playing with confidence and the home side simply has none. Wallace tender, Lockyer out, the season effectively over and the Broncos defence in disarray. They have allowed an average of 34 points over the past month and the visitors will make them pay. The Canberra forwards will roll right over Ivan Henjak's troops and end their season with a whimper. The Raiders book themselves a trip to Kogarah.

My tip: Canberra 26-16
Result: Canberra 18-16

Gold Coast v Wests Tigers

Both teams semi final bound, fully aware that they might meet again in the very near future with a lot more at stake. Tim Sheens and John Cartwright will be keeping their cards very close to the chest. The Tigers are suffering a few injuries and this match is the perfect opportunity to rest up. So what does this mean for Friday night's match at Skilled Park? I'm not really selling it very well.

You can be sure that Scott Prince and Benji Marshall will both want to win this one as old friends face off again. Robbie Farah and Nathan Friend also have a recent history and will be determined not to let each other get away with a win. Here's hoping the very first scrum blows up and if it does, we have a beauty. The Tigers have the Titans measure and will revert to their less flamboyant style of play. It works in a close one.

My tip: Tigers 24-20
Result: Titans 21-18

Parramatta v NZ Warriors

The Parramatta Eels have had a number of chances to turn their season around this year, a number of opportunities to turn up in big games and prove that last year's grand final appearance was no fluke. They have blown it each time. This inconsistency has now led to a season over, a club in shambles and a farewell match at Parra Stadium on Saturday for Nathan Cayless, Feleti Mateo and Kris Inu.

To suggest that the Eels will suddenly be motivated because of this is a stretch. They are capable of so much but once again, will deliver so little. The Warriors taught them a rugby league lesson in their last meeting in Auckland, and we predict the same happens here. The visitors defence will stand up and the frustrated Eels will fold in the final 20 minutes. We also wish Luke Burt the best of luck in facing a man 3 times his size.

My tip: Warriors 20-10
Result: Warriors 26-12

North Queensland v Eastern Suburbs

A tough end to a horror season for the North Queensland Cowboys. They are completely out-gunned here and will need to pull off a miracle in defence if they are any chance at rewarding their fans with a win. Perhaps motivated to send off a few departing players, perhaps with a poor game from the Roosters, perhaps if the referees are completely incompetent, the Cowboys could get up.

Or perhaps, the visitors continue their resurgence and run up 50?? The latter seems more likely with Mitchell Pearce and Todd Carney combining beautifully and a healthy forward pack in front of them. Willie Mason possibly plays his last NRL game, Clint Amos and a bunch of other Cowboys get an opportunity to keep their positions for next season, but ultimately the only thing happening in this game will be the home side itching for Mad Monday.

My tip: Roosters 36-10
Result: Roosters 18-8

Penrith v Cronulla

The Panthers showed plenty of spirit last week to win in miraculous fashion against the Bulldogs on Monday night. Playing the last 10 minutes of that game without their captain, and without their halfback, the Penrith forwards turned it up a notch and pulverized the Bulldogs into submission. This was the definition of making your own luck and without Luke Walsh and Petero Civoniceva again this week, they will need it.

Against the Sharks on Saturday night at CUA stadium, the supporting cast will stand up and finish the regular season in style. Michael Jennings destroyed the visitors when they met at Toyota Stadium earlier in the season and will again be looking to run straight past his opposite number, as well as every other member of the Cronulla back line. Tim Smith must be having nightmares. Panthers get themselves a home semi.

My tip: Penrith 26-12
Result: Penrith 50-12

Melbourne v Newcastle

For just a dollar, you can buy a ticket to this match at AAMI stadium in Melbourne. The Storm are rewarding their fans with $1 tickets to the season finale and will want to end the shambles that was 2010 with a win. A bargain in anyone's language when you consider the footballers on display in this match. No surprise though as the Melbourne club have a history of getting more bang for their buck... jokes aside though we wish them well.

Brett Finch has been a great servant to the NRL and will be missed; Ryan Hoffman is also off to England and a host of others on their way out of Melbourne. This is enough reason to tip them here against a Newcastle side which may have already began its Mad Monday celebrations by the time this Sunday afternoon match kicks off. Adam MacDougall v Greg Inglis a highlight.

My tip: Melbourne 30-12
Result: Melbourne 34-4

Manly v Canterbury

It's not often you get a group of blokes from Belmore congregate in the Northern Beaches, but when the Bulldogs play Manly at Brookvale, there will be hundreds. Dogs fans are known to travel well and will do so again here to add to the atmosphere of the Eagles last home game for 2010. This match also officially closes the curtain on Brett Kimmorley's career and the visitors will be keen to send him out a winner, along with Luke Patten.

Unfortunately for the Dogs and their supporters, the Eagles have bigger plans. In what is effectively a must win game for the home side, we predict they come out blazing and punch a number of holes in the Canterbury defence to end this one early. Trent Hodkinson gives the visitors a preview of what they can expect from him in 2011 and the Eagles forwards dominate. Let's hope for some open football with the battle between 4 very tough centres a definite highlight.

My tip: Manly 30-12
Result: Canterbury 30-24

St George Illawarra v South Sydney

The current generation of rugby league fans were weaned on stories from an era when these two clubs were lords of the land. Saints v Souths represents a traditional rivalry like no other in the Greatest Game of All and how fitting that the J.J. Giltinan shield will be presented after this match. The Dragons have had another wonderful season and their defence is some of the best we've seen. The Rabbitohs have struggled with injury but are still a chance of making the semi finals.

Unfortunately for the visitors, mathematical equations will not matter on Sunday night as the Dragons defence will hold firm again and lead them to another victory. This will be a celebration of St George Illawarra's dominance in 2010 and a reward to the Jubilee faithful. Meanwhile... deep down in the pits of their collective red and white stomachs, the butterflies are starting to flutter and bad memories are rising to the surface. Take a deep breath, Saints fans.

My tip: St George Illawarra 26-6
Result: St George Illawarra 38-24

Paully's Picks - Round 25

NZ Warriors v Brisbane

The Warriors will miss Michael Luck, just as we missed the footage of that horrible injury which nobody can seem to find. Spewing. Speaking of injuries, Darren Lockyer remains out of the Broncos line-up for this match and judging by their performance against the Knights last week, Brisbane might be in trouble. Without the direction of the NRL's best player, Ivan Henjak’s side seemed directionless after the first 20 minutes and never recovered.

This must be corrected against a fit and aggressive Warriors team with a halves combination improving every week. Brett Seymour and James Maloney should be too much for the visitors and the New Zealand defence will also be too strong. Seymour could be primed for a big match against one of his former clubs, and the Warriors play their last home game of the season and a farewell to Brent Tate gives them enough motivation to win.

My tip: Warriors 24-10
Result: Warriors 36-4

South Sydney v Parramatta

Two famous clubs meet for the 112th time on Friday night, and two famous clubs who are on the verge of missing the semi finals. With such high hopes entering the season, this late season disappointment for Bunnies and Eels fans will hurt, but they will still gear up for this clash at ANZ stadium. The return of Daniel Mortimer for the Eels and Dave Taylor, possibly, for South Sydney will help both clubs overcome their on field struggles of late.

Speaking of struggling, Souths in particular have not threatened opposition defences much since the injury to John Sutton. The same happens here and a rejuvenated Mortimer joins the Keating brothers and Feleti Mateo to officially end the Rabbitohs 2010 campaign. If Souths play as they did at CUA stadium last week, Jarryd Hayne could outscore them on his own. Eels too good.

My tip: Parramatta 30-12
Result: South Sydney 24-16

Cronulla v Gold Coast

The Sharks faithful are hoping for a storybook farewell from Toyota stadium for favourite son Luke Covell on Saturday night in the Shire, and will also be bidding goodbye to one of the NRL's finest in this era, Trent Barrett. We wish them well and Sharks coach Stuart Flanagan should have his troops revved up to the eyeballs for this one which should make for an interesting opening 10 minutes.

Unfortunately for the people of Cronulla, Broadbeach pips Wanda again. The Titans have won their last 5 matches and will enjoy the confidence that this brings as they withstand a barrage of highly motivated Sharks and come away with another win. Greg Bird returns to his old home ground and faces the club that tore up his contract; and speaking of prodigal sons... Matt Rogers and Preston Campbell should also receive a warm welcome. Should be fun.

My tip: Gold Coast 28-18
Result: Cronulla 30-16

Canberra v North Queensland

Just a side note.... With Jonathan Thurston, Darren Lockyer and John Sutton all out injured at this time of year, is that evidence that the season is too long? A question for another time perhaps. The questions in this game must be: How much will the Raiders win by? Will the Cowboys fall to pieces when they realise the temperature in Townsville (tops of 27) is a little different to that of our nation's capital (as low as 1)? Will the Raiders players be seeking some sort of revenge on Cowboys coach Neil Henry after he left Canberra on a sour note in 2008?

Answers: Plenty, Yes and Yes.
$1.10 odds for the home side suggest the same and we won’t be tipping anything different. The Raiders forwards do what they do best and bash their way to good field position where Terry Campese and an increasingly impressive Raiders backline does the rest. This match will test the pride of the Cowboys after a difficult season.

My tip: Canberra 40-10
Result: Canberra 48-4

Newcastle v St George Illawarra

Match of the Round for mine. The Knights continue to impress when playing at Energy Australia Stadium and reading about their 'Old Boys' history this week leads one to believe they will approach this match expecting to win. The Dragons were well beaten by the Raiders in Canberra last week and are on the road again this week so fatigue will play a part.

Up against a motivated Newcastle squad, this could be dangerous. What makes this match more interesting is the Dragons' defence. They are still the best defensive unit in the NRL and will need to call on this record to have any chance at victory. They will. We predict the Dragons forwards accept the challenge on Saturday night and pave the way for another grinding victory. Brett Morris v Akuila Uate a highlight, if they see the ball.

My tip: St George Illawarra 16-10
Result: St George Illawarra 26-18

Wests Tigers v Melbourne

The Melbourne Storm's season of stupidity is almost over, thank heavens. Credit must be given though, to Craig Bellamy and his players for respecting the game enough to play out the season with integrity, and aplomb. They are sure to do the same at Leichardt Oval on Sunday afternoon but it may not be enough to topple the Tigers at their famous home ground and when they are in good form.

The home side's victory at Parramatta last week suggested that good form is exactly what they have and this will continue. It will be close though as Melbourne's discipline in defence has not wavered, but Benji Marshall and his forwards will be too good. Robbie Farah, in particular, will be extra motivated against the best hooker in Australia and this matchup will be a highlight. Enjoy.

My tip: Tigers 24-18
Result: Tigers 26-14

Eastern Suburbs v Manly

The Roosters are now on a 3 game losing streak and under pressure to maintain their position in the top 8. Is it time to start making 'Brian Smith' comments about his history under pressure, or in big games? No it is not. Smith's team was unlucky last week against the Titans, receiving some harsh calls from the officials and Todd Carney having an off night. This probably won't happen again.

So, assuming the Roosters bounce back and perform anywhere near their best, a battle awaits them against an impressive but inconsistent Manly club. A battle they should win through standout performances from Carney and Braith Anasta. They lead the way in attack and the rest do enough in defence to smother the Eagles but only just in what could be an epic encounter - just one of many the Roosters have been involved in this year. Tune in to see 4 of the best young halves in the NRL.

My tip: Roosters 20-16
Result: Roosters 30-14

Canterbury v Penrith

What perfect timing by the dogs to announce the signing of Frank Pritchard. One wonders how the fans will react when he is announced at the ground on Monday night. One also wonders if Dogs fans will turn up to farewell Luke Patten in his last home game for the club. Here's hoping they do as there is none more deserved than The General. It seems likely that Brett Kimmorley could also be playing his last home game in what will be an emotional farewell to Rugby League.

Emotional for the fans... but we doubt whether to Bulldogs players can provide the type of performance warranted for this occasion. We predict the visiting Panthers stamp all over any fairytale ending for Kimmorley and Patten and run away with victory late in the second half. Jamal Idris moves back to the centres, again, to create a great matchup against Michael Jennings but Penrith charge towards the finals with a solid win.

My tip: Penrith 30-18
Result: Penrith 24-18

Paully's Picks - Round 24

Newcastle v Brisbane

Friday night under lights at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle sees the Knights playing for pride and the Broncos desperate to stay in the top 8. Desperation is exactly what they will need to survive without Darren Lockyer this week and after conceding 30 points at home to the Eels; there are a few questions to answer for Brisbane. Can they answer them against the Novocastrians?

Yes. Newcastle have won their past 4 home games dating back to mid June and will play with plenty of spirit in front of their fans but the Broncos forward pack will do enough damage early to create plenty of space for their very young and very quick backline. Brisbane will not have a lot of points in them without their captain but they may not need to. Desperation and defence wins.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Corey Parker
My tip: Brisbane 16-14
Result: Newcastle 44-18

Penrith v South Sydney

Both clubs chasing some nature of good form heading into the finals but the difference is, Souths need to find it and find it now. Win or face the prospect of Mad Monday on Russell's farm but I'm sure the bunnies have other ideas as they head west to CUA stadium on Friday night. The Panthers have their own problems. Since their hard fought win against the Dragons six weeks ago, Penrith have won only one game and that win came against the Cowboys.

To make matters worse for the home side, they have conceded 43 second half points in their last two matches whilst scoring only 12. If their home ground is to give them a boost, it has to happen now but we predict the visiting Rabbitohs may have something up their sleeve and overcome the loss of John Sutton to surprise the Panthers in our upset of the week. Sandow v Walsh a great battle of the little men.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Isaac Luke
My tip: South Sydney 24-20
Result: Penrith 54-18

Manly v NZ Warriors

This will be more entertaining than any election coverage, guaranteed. The Warriors have a near full strength squad and a set of halves playing with great confidence and control. Manly are coming off a big loss to the Dragons where some would say they were convincingly beaten. Two very big forward packs face off at Brookvale Oval on Saturday with the visitors holding a more consistent record this season. That is enough for me to tip them to win up in the insular peninsula.

The Warriors have continued to surprise in season 2010 after being most pundits tip for the wooden spoon. Defence has been the catalyst for this success and the same gets them home here. Seymour and Maloney lead them around the park to control field position and put pressure on the young Manly halves. Having said all that - I was really just killing time before talking about the fantastic matchup between 'T-Rex' and 'The Beast'. Tony Williams v Manu Vatuvei could shake the very foundations.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Lewis Brown
My tip: Warriors 24-22
Result: Manly 19-16

Melbourne v Cronulla

For those of you channel surfing between electoral ballot counting and NRL on pay TV, this match may not convince you to stick with pay TV. A bottom of the table clash or Ray Martin... two defensive teams grinding away or Laurie Oaks. The decision for all couch potatoes on Saturday night will be a difficult one so make sure you get your spot on the couch early and take control of the remote. Do not let it go for dear life.

The Storm continue their ridiculous season, at home for the second last time and will be hoping to farewell their departing stars on a high note. The Sharks are in pre season mode, playing to impress new coach Stuart Flanagan and are very long odds to win. At $3.75 they are probably worth a shot if you throw in a ‘either party half-time/full-time double’. Melbourne too good and we predict plenty of niggle between Paul Gallen and Billy Slater.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Cooper Cronk
My tip: Melbourne 20-12
Result: Melbourne 24-4

North Queensland v Canterbury

Super Saturday continues from Townsville in this blockbuster as the Bulldogs head north to face the North Queensland Cowboys. For those of you still awake after flicking between the Sharks v Storm match and the election, this one will be worth the wait. By kick off on delayed telecast, you may well know who holds the fate of the country in their hands and if this strikes as much fear into you as it does me, the Dogs v Cowboys is just the elixir you need to lift your spirits.

Sarcasm aside, there are some stories to tell in this one. Jamal Idris lines up in the second row, meaning he may well run into Willie Mason a few times in the opening exchanges... Arana Taumata faces one of the 15 clubs that tore up his contract..... and Mick Ennis will face Anthony Watts at times in this match which is sure to be a matchup of arguably the two cheekiest hookers in the NRL. Enjoy. Dogs by 1.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Ben Roberts
My tip: Canterbury 25-24
Result: Canterbury 22-20

Canberra v St George Illawarra

The Dragons head down the Hume Highway in search of redemption for their loss in the corresponding match last year. Actually, they probably won't be thinking about that game too much but the fans will be. The Raiders played will an impressive ferocity that night and bashed the Dragons out of the game. Dean Young and Terry Campese also tried to bash the stuffing out of each other in a memorable encounter.

Many thought, at the time, that Saints were vulnerable after this loss and that prediction proved to be correct. If the Dragons read any of this press, they will be motivated well enough to win this game in very cold conditions in our nations capital. If they don't, their defence will get them home anyway. A great battle between arguably the two toughest front rows you will see, and two of the NRL's best fullbacks on show. Awesome.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Darius Boyd
My tip: St George Illawarra 20-8
Result: Canberra 32-16

Parramatta v Wests

Just when you think their season is over, Parramatta remind us what they are capable of. Their forwards looked to be done for the season at times during their match against the Titans two weeks ago, but then stood up to be counted against the Broncos last week. This inconsistency is epitomised by the form of Feleti Mateo. If Feleti can produce again in this match against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon, the Eels season will remain alive.

He won't. The Tigers were super impressive last week and will continue this good form here. Their quicker ruck play and sharper halves will have the Eels out of breath late in the game and the more mobile Tigers pack will take advantage. Some great talent all over the park though and this match will add to the list of many great battles between these two clubs. Hayne v Marshall will have fans gasping once again.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Robbie Farah
My tip: Tigers 28-18
Result: Tigers 20-18

Eastern Suburbs v Gold Coast

Difficult to split these two quality football sides and difficult to say whether they will throw their best at each other, considering they might meet in the semi finals in a few weeks time. The Roosters will not want to lose three in a row so close to the playoffs and will be ready to put in a good performance coming off 10 days rest. This is enough to put your money on them to win at the Sydney Football Stadium on Monday night.

Their attack will return to its sublime best and their young halves will find that spring in their step, seemingly lost after the mire that was their match against the Dragons two weeks ago. The Titans will make things very difficult for the home side but eventually, Carney and Co will come home stronger. Scott Prince v Mitchell Pearce a highlight and tune in to see old friends Jason Ryles and Luke Bailey face off in a beauty.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Todd Carney
My tip: Roosters 24-20
Result: Titans 23-14

Paully's Picks - Round 23

Brisbane v Parramatta

To give you an idea of the Eels season in numbers, they have the exact same points differential as the Canberra Raiders. With all dew respect to the Raiders, this does not sound good for Parramatta fans and simply means the Eels have not lived up to expectations. So should I tip them again? Up against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night - I don't think so, not even if Darren Lockyer is unable to play.

The Eels halves have struggled for the most part this year and last week, their forward pack displayed worrying looks of defeat against the Titans. In their last meeting against the Broncos, Parra scored just the one try and now, they are playing in Queensland for the second consecutive week. Fatigue is sure to set in and the Broncos youth and home ground advantage will get them another win.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Sam Thaiday
My tip: Brisbane 22-18
Result: Parramatta 30-14
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: The Eels take advantage of the Broncos missing Darren Lockyer - no other reason matters here. If Lockyer plays - Brisbane win.

Cronulla v Eastern Suburbs

About time the Cronulla Sharks were given a free-to-air television game!! Under lights on a Friday night against a rival Sydney team - this is just the recipe for coach Stuart Flanagan to motivate his troops in front of their home fans. To add some flavour, the visiting Roosters are coming off a tough loss in a physical encounter against the competition leading Dragons and could be a little flat in this game.

Who am I kidding? Brian Smith has coached 3 million first grade games compared to Flanagan’s 3. Hyperbole aside, the Roosters should be up for this and will dominate through their impressive halves and very willing forwards. Cronulla have named Tim Smith to return from reserve grade and based on his form this year, will be a target for the Roosters ball runners. They will find points and find them often to atone for a round 13 bashing by the Sharks.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Braith Anasta
My tip: Roosters 30-12
Result: Cronulla 18-12
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: Great performance from the Sharks. The Roosters would be happy their defence was still tough after a huge game the week before. They will re-load well for the semis.

Gold Coast v North Queensland

Two clubs moving in completely opposite directions. The Cowboys' Grant Rovelli has been under pressure to keep his spot in the starting squad all season and is now asked to take over from Jonathan Thurston at halfback. This is just one of the problems the Cowboys face in this match; a much bigger problem is the fact that their season is over and they have nothing to play for!!!

The Gold Coast Titans seem like a team on a mission and have all the momentum here. It will take a poor performance from their tradesman like forward pack if the Cowboys are any chance. They are not. Scott Prince guides his team around the park perfectly and Greg Bird makes his return from the bench to give the home side all the weapons they need to stomp on the struggling Cowboys.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Scott Prince
My tip: Titans 26-12
Result: Titans 37-18
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: Grant Rovelli gave a good account of himself and the Cowboys played with plenty of pride. Pity their forwards are a complete mess. Titans finding good combinations after injuries forced a few changes.

Canterbury v Canberra

An impressive performance last week from the Raiders. It is not often they make a comeback like they did against the Panthers last Monday night and this is a great sign for David Furner's team as they aim for a semi final berth. The visitors will be looking to improve their for-and-against in this match against an out of sorts Bulldogs squad whose season is over.

The Raiders will look to dominate a Dogs forward pack that has not been able to get over the top of many this year, and the same will happen here. The farewell tour begins for Luke Patten and Brett Kimmorley but unfortunately for these two great servants of our game, their careers look to be ending with a whimper, rather than a much deserved bang. Terry Campese and Josh Dugan could have a field day.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Terry Campese
My tip: Canberra 32-18
Result: Canberra 28-14
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: The Raiders looked like the better footy team, played like the better footy team and finished like the better footy team. The dogs were completely out of their league in this match and were lucky not have conceded more.

NZ Warriors v Newcastle

A big test for the suddenly in-form Newcastle Knights as they head across the Tasman in search of their third consecutive victory. Important to note that the 2 wins have come at home and they now embark on a journey to Mt Smart Stadium, a notorious graveyard for visiting teams and even more so against a Warriors team in good form. To add to the Knights difficulties, rain is predicted for the entire week in Auckland.

So, with conditions suiting the home side we predict a solid performance from the Warriors Brett Seymour and James Maloney. They control the tempo of this match and the New Zealanders pull away late to strengthen their grip on a semi final berth and put a huge dent the hopes of the Knights. Akuila Uate faces Manu Vatuvei in a tremendous match up out wide but the Warriors too good in the end.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Simon Mannering
My tip: Warriors 24-6
Result: Warriors 22-10
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: Great start to my Sunday. Midday kickoff on the couch, prepared for a 6 hour league extravaganza. This is the only good thing about having a TV station run the game... they make it easy to be very, very lazy. Knights tough but Warriors have a touch of class in the halves and Manu out wide.

Melbourne v South Sydney

With four games remaining in their painful season, the Melbourne Storm will either be praying for the end to come quickly, or motivated to win these final games as a farewell gift to the 7 or so players not with the club next year. I'm tipping that the latter will be enough to get them a win against South Sydney on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne and their defence will be the catalyst.

The Rabbitohs injury troubles have added to the equation as they have lost possibly their most influential player in attack, John Sutton. The responsibility now sitting with Isaac Luke and Chris Sandow as playmakers will be a heavy one as the visitors face a tough assignment to keep their finals hopes alive. Sandow and Luke fall just short and the Storm find a reason to win. Greg Inglis v the much improved Beau Champion a highlight.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Cooper Cronk
My tip: Melbourne 18-16
Result: Melbourne 18-16
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: I believe this is the first correct pick the score for a long, long time. Melbourne too good with Souths missing John Sutton. Souths did not look as bas as i thought they would though. Still a chance at the semis.

Wests v Penrith

The lovely folks in Campbelltown are in for a treat here. Rugby League's heartland will be alive and well on Sunday afternoon as the Penrith Panthers look to find some form against the Tigers. Match of the Round for mine with the Panthers desperation up against the Tigers potent attack, the bookies not able to separate them and both sides with exactly the same win-loss record this year. Anyone's guess and mine is the Tigers.

They would be filthy at losing last week and the Panthers are coming off a short turnaround from Monday night. I can’t think of any other reason but more importantly, this game will feature some of the best talent in the NRL. Jennings, Marshall, Lawrence, Coote, Tuqiri and we haven't even made to the forwards yet. Incidentally, that is where big games are always won and lost and we predict the Tigers forwards do just enough to get over the top of the mountain.....men.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Robbie Farah
My tip: Tigers 20-18
Result: Tigers 43.-18
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: Impressive showing from the Tigers... in fact they dominated in the second half reminded the top 8 teams of how dangeroud they can be. Gareth Ellis superb and Andrew Fifita the destroyer.

St George Illawarra v Manly

A Monday night beauty. Manly put Melbourne to the sword last week in an impressive display and the Dragons were similarly impressive against the in-form Roosters. Good teams peaking at the right time of year and this match will have the pay-TV commentators giddy with excitement. In fact they might be a little too excited and not make any sense at all during the game, just for something different.

All jokes aside, 'Kogarah Oval' will be pulsating with anticipation as Dragons fans gear up for the their most stressful time of year and this match will give a good indication as to whether Manly are the team to knock of the premiership favourites. Happy to overlook the last match between these clubs in round 9 this year as it was mid origin series. This will be another defensive struggle with Manly poking their nose in front at the death. The battle between all 4 centres will be a highlight - Matai v Gasnier and Lyon v Cooper. Awesome.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Jamie Lyon
My tip: Manly 16-12
Result: St George Illawarra 32-10
Man of the Match: -
Snap Review: An impressive performance from the Dragons. In fact this is the best I've seen them play for a while. Nathan Fein and Soward combined well and Trent Merrin was fantastic up front. A huge difference for saints wghen Weyman plays. They are deserved premiership favourites because of an amazing commitment to defence.

Paully's Picks - Round 22

Gold Coast v Parramatta

How hard are the Eels willing to work for their season? Last week suggested they were not up to the challenge of reproducing that amazing run into the 2009 semi finals, and this week will be a bigger test. The Titans have scored consecutive victories away at Kogarah Oval against the league leading Dragons and then returned from Mt Smart Stadium with a good win against the Warriors. The Eels will want to prove they are not going in the opposite direction.

Prove this they will. Let's ignore their performance against the sizzling Roosters and we predict an improved showing with Fui Fui Moi Moi leading the way and Jarryd Hayne following his forwards to victory. Plenty of pressure on the Eels halves here to produce points against a disciplined and in form Gold Coast team but they rise to the challenge. Parramatta's season on the line and they turn up.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Fui Fui Moi Moi
My tip: Parramatta 24-20
Result: Titans 34-12
Man of the Match: Luke Bailey
Snap Review:
Parra switched off in the final 20 minutes and this begs the question - what can motivate them if they cannot turn up with their season on the line?

North Queensland v Brisbane

As the Cowboys wander aimlessly into the setting sun that is season 2010 with Mad Monday celebrations already on their mind, the mighty Brisbane Broncos head into Townsville as pronounced favourites for Friday night's match at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Rightly so. The Cowboys have not produced a convincing 80 minute performance for some time and difficult to predict they suddenly do so here.

So I won't. Brisbane's hangover from last weekend's exhausting victory over the Dragons will only last for the opening 20 minutes but as always, Darren Lockyer will spark the comeback. North Queensland show plenty of energy early but fade away as the visitors continue their run towards the finals. Willie Tonga v Israel Folau a highlight but it will be the Broncos forwards who dominate at the back end of this Queensland derby.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Corey Parker
My tip: Brisbane 26-14
Result: Brisbane 34-26
Man of the Match: Matt Gillett
Snap Review:
Darren Lockyer getting injured in round 23 is not a good sign. Here's hoping for Broncos fans his rib is ok. Speaking of fans - my condolences to the lovely people of Townsville - its been a rough year for you and your haflback.

Manly v Melbourne

So, the Storm continue their travelling circus but this time they face the club with arguably more reason than any club to feel jilted by Melbourne's cheating of the Salary Cap. The Sea Eagles 2007 and 2009 seasons were both ended by losses to the Storm and Manly fans will not have forgotten this fact as they prepare to host their nemesis on Saturday night. We have a feeling they won't simply be waving cash at the Storm players in a show of protest, emotions could be boiling a little more than that.

Match of the Round for mine as this vicious rivalry continues in front of a hostile crowd. Some great matchups across the park with Jamie Lyon facing Greg Inglis a highlight, but the collisions in the middle of the field will have the folks from the insular peninsula on the edge of their seats. Manly bounce back from a poor showing from last Monday night and win a close one.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Steve Matai
My tip: Manly 19-18
Result: Manly 26-6
Man of the Match: Kieran Foran
Snap Review:
Manly truly are a powerhouse club when they turn it on. They've had some very big wins this year and this type of performance proves they are a premiership threat - as well as proving that Melbourne's existence is pointless.

Cronulla v NZ Warriors

Battle stations for the Warriors. After an impressive defensive showing during their 4 game winning streak, New Zealand have lost 2 in a row and allowed 38 and 28 points respectively in these matches. Did they peak too early? Has the spark disappeared? Will Brett Seymour struggle in his return to the shire? Have I asked too many questions? Possibly. This is our upset of the week and all questions will be answered on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium.

Cronulla have been close in the two games since replacing their coach and this time, we predict they finally get over the line for a rare victory. The Sharks forwards stand up to the imposing Warriors pack and build enough of a lead in the first half to hold on. It's a long trip from Auckland to the Shire and the visitors have hit a wall. Nathan Gardner delivers another standout performance and the Sharks salvage some pride and put a dent in the Warriors semi final aspirations.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Paul Gallen
My tip: Cronulla 24-22
Result: Warriors 37-10
Man of the Match: James Maloney
Snap Review:
Impressive performance by the visitors. They are patient and controlled and super fit. I hope they get a home semi final this year because the atmosphere will be ridiculous.

South Sydney v Wests

The imposing forward pack of the South Sydney Rabbitohs is no more. Injury to their most experienced front rower, their brightest star suspended and the broken collarbone of human wrecking ball Dave Taylor must be making John Lang feel a might unlucky. Last week, the Bulldogs smacked them all over the park and this week will be an even bigger test with the Tigers coming to Homebush. The Rabbitohs still have their spine intact but it will take a lot more than that to get them back on track.

The Tigers, on the other hand, are basically at full strength and sitting in 4th place, enough to make them $1.55 favourites during the week. I won't be going against the bookies and neither will the 2005 premiers. Benji Marshall has one of those games we know he is capable of and his forwards exact revenge for a 40 point thrashing at the hands of Souths in round 10 this year. Robbie Farah v Isaac Luke a highlight.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Gareth Ellis
My tip: Tigers 30-16
Result: South Sydney 34-30
Man of the Match: Chris Sandow
Snap Review:
Wow! Unbelievable finish from the bunnies but it must be said .... the Tigers looked to be in control of this match at so many times and in so many ways. Their inability to go for the jugular (thank you s. waugh) has cost them.

Newcastle v Canterbury

Does the phrase, "still a mathematical chance" mean anything to the Dogs and the Knights? It should. These two clubs have not been written off by their fans for season 2010 just yet. The Knights destroyed the heavily favoured Sea Eagles last Monday night to keep their season alive. The Bulldogs also handed out a bashing to South Sydney last week but both the Dogs’ and Knights’ victories smelled like 'too little - too late'.

Newcastle should use their home ground advantage to bury the Bulldogs and keep their semi final hopes alive, especially if Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley can combine well in the halves again. They will. Mullen's kicking game was superb last week and if repeated, will starve the Dogs of field position and give his side every opportunity to use their weapon of mass destruction - Akuila Uate. Jamal Idris moves back to the centres to face Junior Sau in a battle of brute force.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Kurt Gidley
My tip: Newcastle 28-24
Result: Newcastle 30-6
Man of the Match: Kurt Gidley
Snap Review:
The Knights are closer than I thought they would be. They are putting together spirited performances and have won well, two weeks in a row. The race for positions 7 and 8 will be down to the wire.

Eastern Suburbs v St George Illawarra

It doesn't get tougher than this match at the SCG on Sunday afternoon. These two clubs have a wonderful rivalry formed from the Anzac Day matches and this year's traditional clash was brutal. The first half was basically a battle to see who would be last man standing. On that occasion it was the Dragons who stood taller as they outlasted the Roosters and pulled away in the second half. This time? A tough tip but either way it will be physical.

St George Illawarra are once again receiving criticism about their ability to perform at the back end of the season and will be out to prove a point. The Roosters? Well you can't argue with form and the chooks are on a roll; that is enough for me. The Dragons are averaging 10 points per match over the last month and this will not be enough against a Roosters team with so many attacking weapons. Footy fans will enjoy seeing Pearce and Carney up against the best defensive side in the NRL.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Anthony Minichiello
My tip: Roosters 18-16
Result: St George Illawarra
Man of the Match: Dean Young
Snap Review:
Screamer. Credit to both clubs for turning up and producing. If the Roosters keep this halves combination together, they are destined for a premiership within 5 years.

Canberra v Penrith

Monday Night Football in our nation’s capital and the people of Canberra will be rejoicing that Tony Abbot declined an offer from Julia Gillard to hold another debate on this same night. Raider’s fans are free from politics for one night and can enjoy the frosty conditions at Canberra Stadium, rather than listening to two non-league fans pretend to care about them. Or is Abbot a Manly fan? Here's hoping someone can answer that question as it will help me decide who is better equipped to run this great country of ours.

More to the point, Terry Campese and his band of brothers will enjoy the return of Josh Dugan and the Penrith Panthers will not enjoy the weather. Some great talent on display in this match as the two best young fullbacks in the NRL face off and the Raiders young front rowers take on the master himself, Petero Civoniceva. Great matchups. Raiders too good at home as they ruin Matt Elliott's home-coming and keep their 2010 season alive.

My Man of the Match Prediction: David Shillington
My tip: Canberra 26-22
Result: Canberra 30-26
Man of the Match: Terry Campese
Snap Review:
The Raiders making a second half comeback? This club never ceases to amaze. The Panthers must be in free fall. Having said that - better to get these losses out of the way before the semi's.

Paully's Picks - Round 21

Canterbury v South Sydney

Star South Sydney hooker Isaac Luke makes an early return from injury to face serial pest Mick Ennis in just one example of a number of exciting matchups on Friday night. Josh Morris v Beau Champion will definitely be another and Ben Hannant v Sam Burgess is probably my personal favourite. The two teams line up well but it is South Sydney with everything to play for and in much, much better form.

Scoring 28 second half points against a heralded Warriors defence last week is one reason to tip them and the other reasons probably don't matter. The Bulldogs might not be up to this and if last week's opening defensive set of six against Parramatta is anything to go by, they are in trouble. John Sutton dominates the game and is too big and strong for a Canterbury team already planning its Mad Monday celebrations at the Three Swallows in Bankstown.

My Man of the Match Prediction: John Sutton
My tip: South Sydney 30-12
Result: Canterbury 32-12
Man of the Match: Brett Kimmorley
Snap Review:
The Bunnies are either hitting a wall or have fallen apart all together. The Dogs were methodical.

Penrith v North Queensland

Playing at home on a Friday night against possibly the worst team in 1st grade, their halfback coming back from injury and Luke Lewis named to start??..... No excuses for the Penrith Panthers will everything in their favour against the Cowboys at CUA. If the mountain men lose this one I will head out to Penrith Whitewater Stadium and swim the rafting course wearing nothing but my old footy shorts, circa 1992.

Having now lost anyone reading this preview, let me be bold in the following prediction and say that Petero Civoniceva will personally do whatever it takes to ensure a Penrith win and is well supported by Lewis and Trent Waterhouse. Last week's loss against Melbourne could be blamed on poor handling and poor decision making from the Penrith backline and you can bet Petero has told them all about it.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Petero Civoneceva
My tip: Panthers 28-18
Result: Panthers 24-16
Man of the Match:  Luke Lewis
Snap Review:
Lewis make a massive difference but Penrith have proven nothing here. They are still a step away from being a premiership threat.

Parramatta v Sydney Roosters

Planes? Perhaps. Trains? Apparently not anymore. Automobiles? Plenty of parking at Parra stadium for this blockbuster on Saturday. Curiously scheduled for the dreaded 5.30pm time slot on Saturday, this could turn into a screamer with both teams charging towards the playoffs and on all sorts of winning streaks. The Eels favoured mid week at $1.50 but this will be close and very physical.

With Anthony Minichiello in his best form since 2005 and the Todd Carney experiment a ridiculous success, the Roosters will head out west brimming with confidence and will play as such. This will be the biggest test for Parramatta's impressive defence and one that they will not pass. The Roosters forwards once again play above themselves and pound the home side into submission. Pearce and Carney completely outplay Mortimer and Robson.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Nate Myles
My tip: Roosters 20-18
Result: Roosters 48-12
Man of the Match: Todd Carney
Snap Review:
This is was lethal performance from the Roosters and one that should change the mind of every Parramatta fan that Hayne can do it all by himself.

Wests Tigers v Cronulla

With the Tigers fresh off their first loss in a month, they are understandably listed at $1.22 to bounce back and win this one and with the return of Gareth Ellis, should win comfortably. What's more important in this match will be how the Tigers forwards respond to mid week criticism after being thumped off the park by Anthony Watmough and his fellow Eagles last week. Robbie Farah will also be out to prove his toughness.

This means fireworks and who better to come up against when you are looking for a fight than the always willing Cronulla Sharks. Through all of their recent struggles, Paul Gallen and the rest of the forward pack from south of Tom Ugly's bridge has never been labelled soft and in fact, looked more willing at times last week than they have in ages. Point being that I'm obviously hoping for some biff here because the Tigers should win easily so perhaps I'm reaching but maybe..... just maybe, the natives might get restless.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Benji Marshall
My tip: Tigers 34-18
Result: Tigers 24-22
Man of the Match: Liam Fulton
Snap Review:
One of those games that don't mean much to the Tigers. They are a generation Y football team that only put in when they have to.

NZ Warriors v Gold Coast

Match of the round for mine. The Titans showed plenty of ticker to drown the Dragons last week and this kind of mentality will go along way to getting them a win against New Zealand on Sunday. To maintain the rage though, they will need another herculean performance from Luke Bailey and definitely more points from a sputtering attack averaging just 12 points a game over the past month. It is possible.

Not probable though as the Warriors spirited defence will make this even harder and the form of James Maloney getting even better. Maloney, and in fact the entire NZ squad, have been the story of season 2010 with many predicting a wooden spoon finish and having been plagued by injury for large parts of the season. This impressive resurgence continues, as will the hilarious one-eyed form of the home town commentary team from Mt Smart Stadium. Enjoy.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Brent Tate
My tip: Warriors 20-8
Result: Titans 28-20
Man of the Match: Mat Rogers
Snap Review:
Amazing result, in my mind. The Titans are hitting some form at the right end of the season after looking very shaky. Beaten the Dragons and Warriors away. Nice.

Melbourne v Canberra

It's beginning to get difficult to write about the Melbourne Storm. We all had our opinions when the news broke earlier this year, but they are still playing football with the same team and getting paid the same money. It seems like too much effort to talk about how they are about to rob the young Canberra Raiders of their semi final dreams and make another mockery of the NRL administration. I've never been a fan of too much effort.

So instead, I implore Brett White to do everything in his power to help the Raiders leave AAMI stadium with the two points. Brett: this can only be an investment for you. Help them win, drop the ball, miss a few tackles and give away some penalties late in the tackle count. Get them to the finals and when you head to Canberra next year, the place will be pulsating with positivity and this can only rub off on you and then... success is inevitable.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Brett White
My tip: Canberra 21-20
Result: Melbourne 36-12
Man of the Match: Billy Slater
Snap Review:
Bitterly disappointing for Raiders fans. Bitterly disappointing for Storm fans. Why is this still going on?

Brisbane v St George Illawarra

Always a good game of footy and always brutal. Let's hope Sunday's match from Suncorp Stadium will be another great chapter in this 22 year old story. The young Broncos would have been shocked by their loss to the Roosters last Monday night and are again fighting for their place in the semi finals. This kind of desperation can get them home against the Dragons.

And it will. As always, there are theories going around about St George Illawarra's ability to lift for big games and their ability to beat teams who do not cough up easy possession. I subscribe to this theory and so will the Broncos. Led by Sam Thaiday, they aim up, do a bit of bashing in the opening 15 minutes and the rest is history as Thaiday looks for Ben Creagh and finds him often. Saints begin the downward spiral and their fans prepare for the inevitable.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Israel Folau
My tip: Brisbane 18-8
Result: Brisbane 10-6
Man of the Match: Darren Lockyer
Snap Review:
The Broncos have too much experience on the park and are healthy. They never let the Dragons dominate and sent a warning to them for later in the year I think.

Newcastle v Manly

Ordinarily, one might consider tipping an upset here as a few things might fall into place for the Knights. They are at home and will be heavy underdogs playing against a Manly team coming off an emotional win last week; a good recipe for an unlikely victory. Unfortunately for Newcastle the only thing ordinary about this match are their chances of winning and the only recipe will be one for humble pie.

So take a big bight, my very good friends from the Hunter, and here's hoping your season ends quickly. The Manly forward pack out muscle the Knights though Jason King and Anthony Watmough and then Jamie Lyon takes over as the Eagles win their third in a row. Kurt Gidley as always will put up a spirited performance, this time at halfback; and the matchup between Adam MacDougall and Steve Matai will be entertaining but the Eagles too good in the end.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Shane Rodney
My tip: Manly 30-14
Result: Newcastle 32-14
Man of the Match: Akuila Uate
Snap Review:
That Humble Pie tasted great - thanks for asking. Credit to the Knights and their fans.

Paully's Picks Round 20

Canterbury v Parramatta

With the official NRL Rivalry Round behind us for season 2010, this must be a bonus. Arguably the strongest current rivalry in the NRL considering last year’s semi final meeting between these two giants, the Dogs v Eels will again be much anticipated and will no doubt deliver. Considering the momentum the Eels have at the moment, their fans will ensure the atmosphere is brooding with excitement.

Here’s hoping Jamal Idris is given time in the centres in this match to give us an opportunity to witness round 2 between the Bulldogs’ phenom and his old rival, Timana Tahu. Hard to be too concerned with the result here as another chapter in this great rivalry is etched in the records, but Parramatta are deserved favourites and should get the cookies. Ben Hannant v Fui Fui Moi Moi just another highlight in this blockbuster.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Fui Fui Moi Moi
My tip: Parramatta 26-14
Result: Parramatta 32-16
Man of the Match: Jarryd Hayne
Snap Review:
Dogs' season of ill-conceived confidence is over. The Eels heading towards another semi final run.

St George Illawarra v Gold Coast

The Titans are hitting a familiar rough stretch of the season as they seemingly limp towards the finals. The injury bug has officially struck with Greg Bird missing the next month and fellow representative player Ashley Harrison out. Depth will be tested once again but a risky replacement in Steve Michaels will not inspire confidence in Titans fans and they would be nervous heading into Friday night.

Former Bronco Michaels takes over from Mat Rogers at left centre and anyone with a memory of Michaels from last year will remember his defence. The Dragons will no doubt bear this in mind and target him through Beau Scott and Mark Gasnier for the full 80 minutes. The visitors are in the middle of a slump and could be in for a long night here.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Ben Creagh
My tip: St George Illawarra 25-6
Result: Titans 11-10
Man of the Match: Luke Bailey
Snap Review:
Just as the Eels realise September form is the only form that counts, the Dragons continue to struggle during the business end. Red V fans beware.

Canberra v Cronulla

The Canberra Raiders can sniff the top 8 right now and would be desperate to grab two points from perennial easy beats, the Cronulla Sharks. Some would suggest a danger game for the Raiders as history has taught us not to underestimate a club in turmoil and a club with a brand new voice at the helm. Players do respond to this and the Sharks could not get worse than last week, could they?

No. They will play with pride and commitment as always but it aint gonna matter. The home town Raiders should start with their usual physicality through the ruck and go on to score enough points to beat a spirited Cronulla outfit. By spirited I mean angry… by angry I mean with a point to prove… and by that I mean a predicted biff between… perhaps…. Paul Gallen and David Shillington? Here’s hoping.

My Man of the Match Prediction: David Shillington
My tip: Canberra 28-20
Result: Canberra 20-13
Man of the Match: Bronson Harrison
Snap Review:
The Raiders had to fight hard for this win - make no mistake,. It outsthem in good stead to mae a run for the 8. Sharks looked good but their attack still needs some juice.

Melbourne v Penrith

Anyone’s guess. The Panthers have lost 2 straight since their big win over the Dragons at Kogarah and will be desperate to right the ship. Can Melbourne match this desperation? It gets harder each week to pick the Storm as they are not scoring a bunch of points anymore. The free thinking approach to throwing the football around in attack has faded. Their motivation is waning and their purpose invisible.

They will turn up though and tackle their hearts out but Petero Civoniceva and the Panthers pack should have enough to win this one. The battle between Luke Walsh’s kicking game v Billy Slater’s positional play should be a highlight and Michael Jennings will be a highlight unto himself, as always. He faces Chase Stanley in a matchup the Panthers will hope to expose. They do.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Lachlan Coote
My tip: Penrith 26-18
Result: Melbourne 18-10
Man of the Match: Cameron Smith
Snap Review:
The Panthers missing Luke Walsh were probably never a chance to score enough points to beat the Storm. Jennings had a horrible night with his hands and this did not help.

North Queensland v Newcastle

Somehow, whilst playing as bad as they have been, the Cowboys still provide hope that they will play an entertaining brand of football. This hope is all that the lovely people of Townsville will have apart from wishing for a quick and painless end to this abominable season. Speaking of which, they face the Knights on Saturday night in a match destined for Fox Sports’ 9.30pm time slot.

Completion rates will be low, errors high, tries soft and Luke O’Donnell angry in this one as the competition’s cellar dwellers play for pride and not much else. The Cowboys forwards seem to have a little more firepower and that should be enough to give Jonathan Thurston space to work some magic. He does so by linking up nicely with the increasingly impressive Arana Taumata and old mate Matt Bowen.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Jonathan Thurston
My tip: North Queensland 30-20
Result: North Queensland 28-24
Man of the Match: Willie Tonga
Snap Review:
Tonga scored a try and delivered the match winner to Will Tupou. Otherwise not an inspiring match but Gidley was a pleasure to watch. Never gives up.

South Sydney v NZ Warriors

The Warriors have been defending magnificently in recent weeks and deserve their position sitting 5th on the ladder. The Rabbitohs, some would argue, do not deserve to be sitting outside the top 8 having been victims of some questionable refereeing of late. This is only a factor here if you believe in conspiracy theories. It would not surprise most critics if South Sydney were suddenly on the positive side of 50/50 calls.

Either way, we are predicting the Rabbitohs end an impressive run of victories for the visitors and through the power of their all Queensland back row, win handsomely. The Warriors confidence will be high but the Bunnies come home stronger with John Sutton and Sam Burgess leading the way. Watching Dave Taylor run amok in this one will be worth the price of admission.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Sam Burgess
My tip: South Sydney 30-16
Result: South Sydney 38-28
Man of the Match: Chris Sandow
Snap Review:
Warriors tired from a big month. Souths have real injury concerns heading into the business end.

Manly v Wests

Match of the round for mine. The Tigers are on a roll and as usual, are the most entertaining team to watch in the NRL. If Robert Lui actually starts at halfback this week, they will be even more lethal. Manly have found their form again after destroying the Sharks and have also found their mongrel. This all adds up to a bottler at Bluetongue on Sunday afternoon.

We are predicting the Monday night curse hits the Tigers and they have trouble matching the Eagles forwards in a physical, and hopefully spiteful, encounter. This battle of the ruck will be a highlight but Manly hit their peak in this game and do enough damage early to hold off the tired Tigers. Lote Tuqiri v Tony Williams should shake the very foundations. Enjoy.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Steve Matai
My tip: Manly 27-20
Result: Manly 38-20
Man of the Match: Kieran Foran
Snap Review:
Foran's kicking game was exceptional. This game was also - very entertaining for the central coast. Bring back the Bears.

Brisbane v Eastern Suburbs

Judging by recent performances, the Roosters’ halves combination of Mitchell Pearce and Todd Carney could be the best in the land. Pearce has been leading this team around the park nicely and Carney is showing more and more every week; his array of skills seems to be endless. On top of their individual talents, they have developed a good understanding and most importantly are winning football games.

The true test, my dear friends, comes on Monday Night at Suncorp Stadium as the up-and-coming Roosters duo face the greatest player of this generation in a tantalising matchup of the NRL’s finest. Darren Lockyer awaits. Win or lose, the Australian captain will teach these young bulls a thing or two but we are predicting the lesson is a harsh one for the boys from Bondi. Broncos in a close one.

My Man of the Match Prediction: Sam Thaiday
My tip: Brisbane 24-18
Result: Roosters 34-30
Man of the Match: Todd Carney
Snap Review:
You have to feel bad for the Raiders. This Carney kid is born again and the Raiders gave nothing to show for it.

A Rugby League Representative Calender - my wish list.

I recently read an old Andrew Voss column in Big League where he talks of extending the season and playing rep games mid week culminating in test series after origin. It has merit. Sean Fagan also posted this article as his opinion of how the rep calender should look.

If I was to have my say......

Id like to include a bigger representative 'month' that showcases international rugby league, as well as highlighting the NRL and uses this break to play the origin series over 3 consecutive Monday Nights. Similar to soccer's approach to World Cup qualifying, or the NBA's approach to its mid year 'All Star' match.  The competition proper simply shuts down and to avoid having a too many players with 3/4 weeks off - we incorporate some more games into a celebration of league including some old traditions and some new, successful initiatives.

This suggestion also responds to the issue of a season too long and subsequent meaningless matches at the beginning of the year. Many league supporters know that teams only need to start winning around July to make the top 8 and this takes away from some performances in early rounds. Shorten the season and every match will mean something - bigger crowds will come.

So - to my suggestion....
week 1
Friday Night - Tonga v Samoa
What a spectacle in 2009 during the Rugby League World Cup!! A passionate game of football attended by a huge crowd at Penrith's CUA stadium. This was an instant success.

Saturday Night - City v Country
Play this game as a genuine showpiece of young talent in the NRL, but also use it to gauge players' performance against the best in NSW. This still makes it an origin trial - but for future series.

Monday Night - Origin 1

week 2

Friday Night - Indigenous All Stars v New Zealand.
This gives both teams more time together as preparation for their respective 'other' matches. The Indigenous team now have the February All-Star' game as a highlight, and NZ will use this match as a warm up to a possible post origin series (or one off test) or end of year tri nations, which probably should be held every 2 or 3 years - not every year. Admitteldy, the Indigenous team would be missing troops on origin duty, but this puts more onus on development. A great opportunity for young talent to learn at a higher level and a good earner for a worthy charity. This match could also be moved to Saturday or Sunday to accommodate for the large number of interstate and rural league fans in attendance.

Saturday Day/Night - Rugby League 7s tournament.
With a number of players who could be 'on holidays' during this month, include them in the 7s and bring back an entertaining concept. Marketed well, this could be a highlight.

Monday Night- Origin 2

Week 3

Saturday night - NSW v QLD under 20s... with a Junior Rep Grand Final curtain raiser where Flegg and SG Ball Grand Finals are played.
This will add to the Rugby League "expo" approach and double as a scouting extravaganza for all clubs.

Sunday - Papua New Guinea v Australian Pri-Ministers 13
PNG are obviously mad for their footy and this game could be part of the rep calender, rather than at year's end. If played in PNG, the local fans might miss out on seeing some of the NRL's best, but this is not too far from current strategy.

Monday night - Origin 3

Following weekend - full round of matches.

This addresses the issues of player fatigue, players missing from games through rep duty and removes the need for byes as we would shorten the season by a couple of weeks. It also markets the jewel in the rugby league crown (SOO) as a stand alone event surrounded by a carnival of other league matches.

Paully's Picks Round 19

Gold Coast v Brisbane

Always a tough matchup and one that the Titans have never lost when hosting their big brothers from Brisbane. Same again here as Scott Prince is better for his hobbled run at Campbelltown last week, Prince will lead his team nicely around the green pastures of his home ground. What a battle this shapes up to be though, especially with the class of back rowers on display through the likes of Harrison, Thaiday and Parker.

We see this match being won or lost with discipline as the talent is spread quite even and form seems to favour the Broncos slightly, but not enough for mine. Ball security and field position the key here (as it often is) and the Titans win this battle of attrition through the leadership of Prince and some outstanding play from Greg Bird. Mat Rogers v Israel Folau a highlight as the Titans veteran faces a millionaire 13 years his junior.

Man of the Match Prediction: Greg Bird
Tip: Titans 25-18
Result: Broncos 24-10
Man of the Match: Josh Hoffman
Snap Review:
The Broncos defence was outstanding and sends a clear message that they are fresh, have a perfect blend of youth and experience and are making their run.

South Sydney v St George Illawarra

The more League changes, the more she stays the same. I remember many moons ago, looking forward to the official season opener between these clubs as they would face off in the annual Charity Shield pre-season match. This fixture would always erupt into at least 2 or 3 brawls until a few years ago when the feeling was lost and coaches started treating it like an actual pre-season match; which despite its scheduling was never considered as such.

Suddenly, we are seeing a return to these days of the knuckle as Origin seems to have given a few players the itch that every league fan wants them to scratch. We plead to all Souths and Saints players to scratch that itch on Friday night - you know you want to. We are predicting a bit of niggle anyway here as Souths fight for pride against the competition leading Dragons. Burgess, Taylor and Ben Lowe will not be pushed around and the winner of this battle in the forwards will win the match. Saints' too good in the end.

Man of the Match Prediction: Darius Boyd
Tip: St George Illawarra 18-10
Result: Dragons 16-13
Man of the Match: Darius Boyd
Snap Review:
The bunnies are filthy at this one and we'll see how they react. John Sutton and Chris Sandow outplayed by the dragons experience and patience.

NZ Warriors v Melbourne

The Warriors performance last week should be heralded as one of club greatest victories since their establishment in 1995. They were down on troops to begin with and under a ridiculous amount of pressure late in the game. Why is this important now? They must be exhausted. Physical and mental fatigue has undone many a favourite in the NRL this year and the visiting Melbourne Storm will be a difficult test of the Warriors resolve.

A test they will pass impressively, if the team named midweek actually takes the field. Specifically, if Brett Seymour plays and Brent Tate can return early from a shattered jaw, anything is possible at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night. Add Lance Hohaia's name to this list and the home side will be brimming with confidence, especially in their defence. Oh yes... I nearly forgot about the Storm. Why even make the trip over? What motivates them now? Warriors continue their good form.

Man of the Match Prediction: James Maloney
Tip: Warriors 18-16
Result: Warriors 13-6
Man of the Match: James Maloney
Snap Review:
Thats 2 from 3 MOM selections correct. I'm using the leagueunlimited.com Man of the Match opinions as my guide as official Dally M scoring is no longer published. Warriors on their way to hopefully a home semi final which will make for great TV.

Cronulla v Manly

Forgetting form for a moment, we have two clubs who traditionally hate each other and will exhibit this hatred on the field on Saturday night. True that Manly desperately need a win to right their season and true that the Sharks can possibly pull off an upset, but if Manly lose to the Raiders and Sharks in consecutive weeks the insular peninsula might actually break away from the mainland and float away with shock and dismay.

Not to put too fine a dramatic point on it, but here's hoping this type of natural disaster does not occur to the lovely people of Sydney's north but the tectonic plates of pressure sit squarely on the shoulders of Des Hasler’s young halves. As often mentioned on this blog, Trent Hodkinson and Kieran Foran are the key to any Manly success but are now struggling with the week to week grind of the NRL. Time to suck it up and earn your crust boys.

Man of the Match Prediction: Glenn Stewart
Tip: Manly 30-14
Result: Manly 48-18
Man of the Match: Anthony Watmough
Snap Review:
Horrible. A complete carve up from a motivated Eagles team. The halves combo at the Sharks was always going to be a problem. Tim Smith had been dropped already and TB injured. They never had a chance.

Penrith v Parramatta

Difficult to tell whether Parramatta have broken free of the shackles of mediocrity and if they actually did play well to beat the Cowboys last Monday, or were the Cowboys just horrible? Before you answer that, allow me to suggest that the answer is irrelevant because Parramatta now have reason to play with confidence which should concern Matthew Elliott and his Penrith Panthers.

For some reason though, I dont think the Panthers will be concerned about the Eels. Rather they are probably working on their attack this week and will be determined not to lose two consecutive home games. This will get them home in the end as Michael Jennings toys with Joel Reddy and the Panthers defence does the rest. Match of the round for mine as these proud clubs meet for the 81st time and the west heats up again for this local derby.

Man of the Match Prediction: Michael Jennings
Tip: Penrith 24-18
Result: Parramatta 34-28
Man of the Match: Jarryd Hayne
Snap Review:
The Eels have been cruising along all year and this, rather than impressing me, just goes to show the season is too long. Teams can fiddle about until July and it does not matter. More on this in future blogs about rep season calenders and shortening the season. Parra look good though.

Canberra v Newcastle

Dear Prime Minister,
I write this open letter not as a member of any political party, nor as an person with any political leanings. My party is Rugby League, and my policies revolve around hitting big, hard and often. This is simply a letter of friendly advice to you, politely suggesting you attend the match between your Canberra Raiders and the visiting Newcastle Knights. If your assistant has read this far, I beg them to continue.

So far, in your very short tenure as leader of this great nation, I've seen you only in AFL colours, or Melbourne Storm colours. Not a good start. For you to successfully represent those of us who support the Greatest Game of All in its home north of the Murray, get to Canberra stadium on Sunday at 2pm. Support your Raiders. This will a) endear you to the blue collar supporters of league and b) endear (or perhaps alienate) you to the thousands of Newcastle fans tuning in who represent the mining industry in a way only Newcastle can. I don't need to stress the urgency any more than that.

Man of the Match Prediction: David Shillington
Tip: Canberra 30-22
Result: Canberra 52-18
Man of the Match: Josh Dugan
Snap Review:
The Raiders turned it on here - make no mistake. Difficult to say that the Knights played badly because they never had the ball. An outstanding display by the home side and once again - lets hope they can stick with this team for a while and no poaching occurs.

Eastern Suburbs v Canterbury

The Sydney Roosters are rolling along towards the semi finals in impressive fashion. Brian Smith has Todd Carney in his preferred position as five eighth and this move is reaping rewards thanks to Smith's patience. Playing against a resurgent Bulldogs squad who have won their past 3 with a tremendous new attitude in defence, it will be another test for the boys from Bondi, along with many others they've faced in a tough year.

They pass this one also, but only just. The Bulldogs pride will keep them close but the class of Mitchell Pearce and Carney will prevail in the end. We are predicting a furious battle as old rivals face off once again, this time the fury will appear in the form of Nate Myles who will have on eye on the football, and his other eye on Michael Ennis for 80 minutes. Fantastic.

Man of the Match Prediction: Nate Myles
Tip: Roosters 26-18
Result: Roosters 36-32
Man of the Match: Braith Anasta
Snap Review:
Some of the skills on display in this match were tremendous. Specifically from Pearce, Carney and Anasta. Todd Carney in particular has the ability to win matches single handedly and he did so here. The Roosters are motoring.

Wests v North Queensland

The Tigers at Leichardt on a Monday, against arguably the worst team in the competition this year and only at -8.5? Unbelievable. The last time I was shocked by a betting line this season, Newcastle upset the Titans at home which gives even further weight to my credentials as a tipster. Enough gambling talk though, this will be a good one for the Tigers to take a break from winning with discipline and defence and bring back the old Tigers who look to score a try from every set.

Doubtful whether Tim Sheens will allow this to happen but my fingers remain crossed. With Robert Lui named at halfback for the home side, Chris Lawrence moves back to centre to reunite with Lote Tuqiri as the most lethal combination in 1st grade. Keep an eye on the matchup on this side of the field with Arana Taumata for the Cowboys slowly making a name for himself. Wests too good in this one with Robbie Farah a standout.

Man of the Match Prediction: Robbie Farah
Tip: Tigers 34-14
Result: Tigers 26-16
Man of the Match: Lote Tuqiri

Paully's Picks Round 18

Eastern Suburbs v South Sydney

There is more history in this rivalry than any other in the NRL. The Rabbits and the Roosters meet for the 201st time on Friday night and anyone with a sense of rugby league history will appreciate this but anyone in a tipping comp will not. The Roosters finally play a home game after 3 away games in Melbourne, Christchurch and Canberra respectively. Impressive that this young team was able to win 2 of the three and very unlucky not to have made it 3.

Will they be fatigued? Perhaps but the real question in this match will be answered by Beau Falloon who replaces the injured South's superstar Isaac Luke. Luke has been a major contributor this year and possibly the reason South Sydney currently sit 5th on the ladder. If Falloon can make the transition seamlessly and the Rabbitohs play close to their potential, they win. We think they enjoy the two weeks rest and dominate through the forwards.

Man of the Match Prediction: Sam Burgess
Tip: South Sydney 24-20
Result: Roosters 18-14
Man of the Match: Todd Carney
Snap Review:
Cracking game of footy and Souths were very unlucky after working hard for 80 minutes through their monster forward pack. But the Roosters improved as the game went on and this is usually a sign of experience. The Roosters are a young team and if they are showing sings of wisdom now, they could do anything.

Wests Tigers v Gold Coast

This match promises so much but will only deliver if both halfbacks actually do start. I implore Tim Sheens and John Cartwright to give the lovely people of Campbelltown the football exhibition they deserve and make Robert Lui and Scott Prince needle up as much as needed to take the field for their respective clubs. The Tigers played remarkably well to win without Lui last week and the Titans have not looked very good since Prince left the field against Canterbury 3 weeks ago.

So... they both play and it will be on. Match of the round for mine so tune in to watch the suddenly defensive minded Tigers host the disciplined Titans in a screamer. Benji Marshall and co will look to take advantage of the inexperienced right side defensive combination of Bodene Thompson and Will Zillman. This is where the home side will do the most damage and Chris Lawrence could combine with Lote Tuqiri to have a field day. A great matchup of hookers here in a must-watch game of pure football.

Man of the Match Prediction: Chris Lawrence
Tip: Tigers 26-18
Result: Tigers 15-14
Man of the Match: Robbie Farah
Snap Review:
That fight in the 58th minute was an absolute pleasure to watch. Two tough hookers going at it and its always good to see who takes the next hit up after eruptions of this sort. Credit to the Tigers pack for muscling up in this one.

Manly v Canberra

Honestly, if Manly lose this match they cannot possible be fairdinkum. The Eagles need this win for so many reasons but most importantly for the confidence of their young halves. Whilst steering the team to a good record and impressive 6th on the ladder, Trent Hodkinson and Kieran Foran have played with wisdom beyond their years but are looking tired lately. The NRL’s week to week grind does that to young footballers and Des Hasler would have expected it.

Manly can also expect to meet a committed Raiders squad at Brookvale on Saturday afternoon but should have too much class for them in the end. Hodkinson and Foran have not played in 15 days and will enjoy this rest to deliver a standout performance against a struggling Canberra team. The Raiders have a decent away record this year but their 2010 record of scoring points in the second half of games is almost indecent. Manly too good.

Man of the Match Prediction: Jamie Lyon
Tip: Manly 30-12
Result: Canberra 24-22
Man of the Match: Terry Campese
Snap Review:
Problems up in the insular peninsula. Full kudos to the boys from our nations capital but Manly have now put themselves under pressure. David Shillington is on his way to winning prop of the year awards and this is one of the reasons the Raiders keep winning away games. They just need a consistent halfback.

Canterbury v Melbourne

These days in the NRL the difference between winning and losing can be tiny. So small in fact that 1 defensive error can cost you a season and one positional change can alter the outcome of big games. On this occasion, a positional change could be the biggest difference. Greg Inglis will look up and rather than seeing Jamal Idris, he will see Shane Neumann and Tim Winitana.

If Inglis is recovered from Origin celebrations and Brett Finch gives him early ball, it could be a massacre but the dogs have started well two weeks in a row now and could put enough pressure on the Storm to snatch victory. For some reason they are $1.85 favourites but with the Melbourne defence still operating at a high level, the Bulldogs have it all to do. We predict they do very little and Melbourne's defence frustrates Barba and Kimmorley into error whilst Mick Ennis continues a week long sledging battle with Cameron Smith.

Man of the Match Prediction: Greg Inglis
Tip: Melbourne 24-12
Result: Canterbury 20-18
Man of the Match: Ben Hannant
Snap Review:
Dogs of War?... more like Dogs of Bore. They are grinding their way through the competition  and have now won 3 in a row with this new attitude in defence. It's working but it looks horrible. Having said that some of their on-line defence against the storm was amazing. I take back everything I just said. The dogs look great.

Newcastle v Cronulla

We are at a stage in the season where some matches might not have much meaning as teams come to realise they are either a 'mathematical equation' to make the semi finals or no chance at all. I'm not sure in which category these two teams belong but I'm leaning towards the latter. It's been another difficult year for Ricky Stuart and I can only guess so because he always looks angry. The Knights have also had their troubles but both clubs seems to be improving lately.

More importantly, I can't believe Blake Ferguson has not signed for next year. He would be a great pickup for any club and his matchup against Akuila Uate in this match will be a definite highlight. Isaac De Gois faces his former teammates in another example of how I am reaching for reasons to make this game interesting. The Knights too good at home as Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley prove that the cream most certainly rises to the top.

Man of the Match Prediction: Kurt Gidley
Tip: Newcastle 26-14
Result: Newcastle 21-10
Man of the Match: Kurt Gidley
Snap Review:
Kurt Gidley deserves so much more than being stripped of the NSW captaincy and having to put up with losing origin games. He also deserves an apology from all the 'experts' who said he should not even be in the origin team. Kurt backed up a standout performance in origin 3 with a masterful game here to lead his team to victory.

Penrith v NZ Warriors

Assuming that the Panthers have all of their origin players healthy, how can you tip against them at CUA stadium on a Sunday afternoon against the Warriors? $1.30 says you can't and as any readers will know by now, I rarely win an argument over the bookies. In fact I rarely win anything over the bookies and refuse to include the Warriors +9.5 in my multi this week. Downright refuse... I couldn’t possibly... you never know ... just maybe.... ok I’ll do it.

A lot to like about the Warriors form since they copped a thrashing at Campbelltown over a month ago and the Panthers have a few players backing up. Not to mention the lot of them backing up from a huge win over the Dragons on Monday night. However, this is not enough to call an upset of the week and I dont have the barrels for it anyway. Luke Walsh back from a week off leads the way and the Panthers win their 5th in a row.

Man of the Match Prediction: Lachlan Coote
Tip: Penrith 32-18
Result: NZ Warriors 12-6
Man of the Match: Jeroma Ropati
Snap Review:
If I was a Warriors fan, this would be one of those games you talk about to other Warriors fans in 5 or 10 years time, reminiscing about that day at Penrith when "we held em out for the whole second half". I hope NZ fans are celebrating this match as one of the greatest wins in their clubs history. Amazing.

Parramatta v North Queensland

Is it really an upset if the Cowboys get away with this one? Probably. The Cowboys seem to have severe internal strife tearing their season to shreds and winning this match would definitely surprise most punters based on that rumour. The Eels, meanwhile, have been defending gallantly in recent weeks (not including that horror 10 minutes v the Warriors) and will do so again here.

The question remains whether Daniel Mortimer and Jeff Robson can create more than 1 try between them. We say no but the Eels forward pack lifts for this one and it's enough to carry them home. Parramatta bounces back from a miserable 3 week stretch to claw home and salvage their season. Their pack and interchange bench is the difference in the end but if given enough space, Willie Tonga could do some damage and Thurston and Bowen are still capable of something.... but not on Monday night.

Man of the Match Prediction: Tim Mannah
Tip: Parramatta 18-12
Result: Parramatta 36-24
Man of the Match: Jarryd Hayne
Snap Review:
Tough to credit the Eels with saving their season entirely here. League fans will need more proof than simply beating a Cowboys team on the verge of collapsing into a disorganised heap. Must mention the play of Willie Mason though - outstanding.
