Paully's Picks - Round 4

South Sydney v Manly Warringah

With the Rabbits opening their account for season 2011 last Friday night against the Eels, fans and media alike may lay off them for at least another week. A week is all you get in the NRL; a week to prepare, a week to get over a loss, a week to hopefully recover from injury... you get the point. South Sydney now has this week to prove their critics wrong about inconsistency and about the performances of Chris Sandow and John Sutton.

Sutton will again be the focal point of the Bunnies’ attack in this match; and for the Manly defence. Speaking of which, how brutal have they been in the last fortnight? Credit must go to the Eagles as they turn back the rugby league clock and win games by bashing their opponents into submission. Will it work against South Sydney on Friday night in Gosford? No. Asotasi and co. rise to the challenge and another blood-bath ensues. Souths in a close one.

My tip: South Sydney 24-22

Brisbane v Penrith

Difficult to pin point exactly what the problem is out at Penrith. An indifferent start to the season has them under the rugby league media spotlight and has their coach facing questions about his job security. One thing is certain though, it does not get any easier with a new halfback and hooker combination and it gets even harder when you face the Brisbane Broncos at home, 2 days after Darren Lockyer announces his impending retirement.

So, with a seemingly impossible task set and the bookies against them to the tune of 8.5 points, the Panthers walk into Suncorp Stadium on Friday night with a mountain to climb. No doubt they will give it everything they have but eventually their foothold will slip, the ropes will give way, the landslide will come down quickly and I will run out of exaggerated metaphors. The Broncos too good.

My tip: Brisbane 24-12

Canberra v Gold Coast

We are getting closer to the time of year when it is almost foolish to tip against the Raiders at home. It’s getting colder and colder by the day in our nation’s capital with temperatures as low as 9 degrees predicted for Saturday evening. Meanwhile, the visiting Titans have been training their guts out in balmy conditions up at Robina and would be beyond desperate to score their first victory of the season.

So, with that weather report out of the way, it’s tough to give up on the Titans after the stellar season they had in 2010 and I’m tipping Scott Prince and Greg Bird drag them kicking and screaming over the line in a nail-biter. The Raiders have plenty of young stars on paper but it will be the wily old veterans from the Gold Coast who play smart, disciplined football and the Titans win for the first time ever at Canberra Stadium. Upset of the week.

My tip: Gold Coast 22-20

Parramatta v North Queensland

So, to the Cowboys... Which incarnation of the Townsville club will turn up on Saturday night at Parramatta Stadium to play against the struggling Eels? The disciplined and controlled 17 that outlasted the Broncos in round 1? The weekend warriors that were trounced by the Knights in round 2? Or, the dominant force that destroyed the Melbourne Storm last Monday night at Dairy Farmers?

Whatever the answer is, you can count on one thing. Jonathan Thurston looks to be returning to the form that had many pundits tagging him as ‘World’s Best’. His shoulders have healed, he is getting support from his number 6 for the first time since Jason Smith graced us with his presence and his forwards are protecting him. JT shines above the pack and delivers another win for the visitors. He is also in my NRL fantasy team, so fingers crossed I’m on to something here.

My tip: Cowboys 30-20

Cronulla v NZ Warriors

Warriors coach Ivan Cleary has reached the point, admittedly rather early in the season, where changes are required. Partly due to injury and partly due to performance, these changes reflect the New Zealand clubs’ struggle for scoring options so far this year. So with that in mind, Feleti Mateo finds himself in the number 6 spot outside James Maloney and if these two can’t produce points for the home side, they are in trouble. Why?

The visiting Sharks have looked positively thrilling over the last fortnight and bring this good form across the Tasman on Sunday afternoon to begin your triple header for the day. For those of you wondering why the Sharks have moved their home game to Owen Delaney Park in Taupo, this beautiful town on the North Island on NZ speaks for itself. As will the Warriors players who stand up and finally open their account for 2011 in a close one.

My tip: Warriors 21-14

Newcastle v St George Illawarra

Having been robbed of the chance to see future superstar Beau Henry saddle up against his old club, footy fans should tune in to see one of the great recent rivalries continue when Newcastle host their first home game of the season on Sunday afternoon at Ausgrid Stadium. A notoriously tough road trip for any club, the Knights home ground has undergone a facelift and will be unveiled against the reigning premiers.

As usual, their loyal supporters should turn out in numbers and the return of injured captain Kurt Gidley will only help their chances of an upset. Unfortunately for the Newcastle faithful, they need more than a chance to break through the best defensive team in the land. The Dragons stifle the home side’s enthusiasm early and grind out another win but the highlight of this match, for the purists, will be the kicking display put on by Jarrod Mullen and Jamie Soward. Two of the best.

My tip: St George Illawarra 23-16

Sydney Roosters v Wests Tigers

A very early test of depth for the Tigers but one that sees a number of players brought in with 1st grade experience. Such is the wisdom and foresight of coach Tim Sheens who has been around long enough to know that Rugby League is a brutal game. No better example of this brutality than Chris Lawrence’s dislocated hip injury from last week. Horrible scenes. Fingers crossed for this future superstar and a speedy recovery.

The Roosters, on the other hand, have their stars in good condition. Todd Carney will benefit from the 2 games he has played since groin surgery and Jake Friend returns to the starting line up to bring cohesion back to the Bondi club. Something they have been lacking in the last fortnight. This proves the difference as Carney shows glimpses of his 2010 form in a bottler at the SFS on Sunday. A dry track and plenty of points to entertain us all in this week’s (re)match of the round.

My tip: Roosters 32-24

Melbourne v Canterbury Bankstown

The undefeated, top of the table Bulldogs face another big test for their new look roster when they travel down to Melbourne for Monday Night Football at AAMI park. The home side are favourites here, with bookies predicting that catching the Storm after such a heavy loss could be too much to overcome for the visitors. However, the matchup looks a little less simple than applying the ‘bounce back factor’.

Canterbury brings with them a host of talent that could break through Melbourne’s notoriously stingy defence. Ben Barba and Jamal Idris, both in white hot form already this season, could run amok if the ‘Dogs forwards get on top and we predict they do. The likes of Frank Pritchard and Aidan Tolman will bend the Storm line backwards and Barba and Idris do the rest. The ‘Ennis the Menace’ show will again be a highlight, or lowlight depending on your views, this time against the Australian hooker, Cam Smith. A beauty.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 20-18

Paully's Picks - Round 3

South Sydney v Parramatta

Already a fair amount of pressure on the Rabbitohs from their fans and the Rugby League media, but it is amazing how quickly this pressure will disappear after one win. To get this win, the same old questions must be answered by Souths: Can they play well for 80 minutes and can they get leadership from the halves?? I'm tipping they play well for long enough; and John Sutton delivers enough to get his team past the Eels on Friday night at Homebush.

The bunnies have recruited well and this is where that recruitment pays dividends. Experienced footballers will not panic with the likes of Greg Inglis and Michael Crocker playing leading roles. Also keep an eye on Dave Taylor who ran at the Bulldogs last week like he was shot out of cannon - more of the same here. Speaking of more of the same, you know what you will get from the Eels as they stick to the basics but it simply won't be enough against a desperate South Sydney team.

My tip: South Sydney 24-12

Gold Coast v Brisbane

With Greg Bird back in the number 6 jersey and the return of Anthony Laffranchi and Mark Minichiello, Titans fans believe that this is their week. Criticism continues to mount that this young franchise is full of ageing footballers but the Gold Coast club get their chance to prove that old bones can still scrape together a victory against their Queensland rivals, the Broncos, at Skilled Park on Friday night. What better opportunity to register their first win of the season.

On this occasion however, when opportunity knocks it will be the Brisbane Broncos who answer the call as they are powered by the perfect combination of youth and experience. Speaking of power, Ben Hannant is named to play in his first match for the visitors since begging to leave Sydney and Justin Hodges makes his return from injury after missing the entire 2010 season. This should give the Broncos the edge, but only slightly against a desperate opponent.

My tip: Brisbane 20-16

Penrith v Cronulla

'Centrebet Stadium' just sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? But let's not focus on the negatives here as there is a whole lot to like about this match. The Cronulla forward pack has now announced itself to the NRL with a thunderous and match winning performance last Monday night against the reigning premiers. The Panthers pack, meanwhile, knocked the stuffing out of Parramatta last week right from the opening whistle. So with intentions clearly signified, fingers crossed for some fireworks.

Unfortunately for Sharks fans, you'll be brought back down to earth with a thud. The home side has plenty of speed and class out wide to sniff out any opportunities and that's exactly what they do with the likes of Michael Jennings and Lachlan Coote doing the damage. Wade Graham returns to his home town wearing enemy colours for the first time but is outplayed by his opposite number in Luke Walsh. Panthers run away with it.

My tip: Penrith 32-12

Wests Tigers v Canberra

With Teacher v Student in the coaches box's and a whole bunch of westies in the Grand Stand, this encounter promises plenty of entertainment as the brawn of the Raiders forward pack meets the brain of the scheming Tigers. If any of you have been bothered to watch the NSW State Election coverage on Saturday night, it will probably be over by 7.30pm so do yourself a favour and tune into this semi-final replay between the Tigers and Canberra from Campbelltown Stadium.

It’s only a 2 hour drive from our nation’s capital to Wests' home ground. Incidentally this is the same amount of time it would take the Tigers players to get to Western Sydney from their Eastern Suburbs homes if there is a breakdown in the Airport Tunnel. Election issues aside, Robbie Farah should have the big Raiders forwards running in circles as he and Benji Marshall show a bit too much class for the visitors to handle. They run riot at home.

My tip: Tigers 28-12

NZ Warriors v St George Illawarra

The Warriors seem like a team well aware of the dangers of peaking too early in a long NRL season. We've all heard that you "don't win premierships in March" and "it’s a marathon, not a sprint" and of course my favourite, "you only need to win half your games to make the 8". The fact that this last phrase is true means firstly, that it’s time to review our finals format and secondly, that the Warriors need to win nearly all of their home games to be any hope in September.

They will have to wait another week to get their first. The reigning premiers were beaten up by their younger brother last week and this would have damaged some pride at the Dragons. Just enough damage to ensure they bounce back to escape Mount Smart Stadium this Sunday with the two points. James Maloney, the Warriors' key playmaker, returns from suspension and with rain predicted for Auckland on Sunday, this will be a close one. Close enough for me to take the Warriors with 6.5 start on my multi.

My tip: St George Illawarra 16-12

Canterbury Bankstown v Eastern Suburbs

Match of the round for mine. Canterbury seem to have their combinations down pat already this year with Trent Hodkinson looking like he has been at Belmore forever and Aidan Tolman looking like an old Bulldog at heart. The Roosters have essentially only one new face in their squad for 2011, Mark Riddell. Judging by 'piggy's' weekly column in a Sydney metro newspaper, he is happy to be home and has not lost his sense of humour.

He will need it on Sunday afternoon at ANZ stadium. Difficult to picture two more verbose and mischievous hookers in the NRL than Mick Ennis and Riddell and this is a matchup worth tuning in to see. Relevant because whoever wins the battle up the middle in this match will no doubt find more space out wide to produce points. Something these two clubs seem to do in bucket loads when they face each other and a wet track on Sunday will not change this. The 'Dogs poke their nose in front at the death.

My tip: Canterbury-Bankstown 30-28

Manly-Warringah v Newcastle

A hot start to 2011 for the Knights and a brutal return to form for the Sea-Eagles last week has this match standing out as a beauty at Brookvale with both clubs carrying good momentum. The third and final match in your Sunday afternoon triple header will make it difficult to get off the couch but ultimately rewarding your laziness with another bitter chapter in this 'north of the bridge' rivalry.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they don't look to have the same sting up front as some Newcastle teams of the past. There will be no violent encounters of the Paul Harrogan/Mark Carroll variety in this match but what Newcastle does bring down the F3 is the form halfback of the competition. Jarrod Mullen's left boot has delivered two straight wins to start the season but the proverbial shoe will be on the other foot in this match as the Eagles forwards defend their home turf and squeak out another win.

My tip: Manly 19-18

North Queensland v Melbourne

The unstoppable Rugby League machine from the south continues to destroy everything in their path and its ruthless dictator will stop at nothing to seek revenge on the evil empire that took away his glory last year. In this Blog's season preview, the Melbourne Storm were predicted to deliver a performance in 2011 that would bring back their former glory in the only way they know how - by setting the benchmark for football excellence that the other 15 teams in the NRL aspire to.

Last week's demolition of the Gold Coast Titans indicated that this is exactly what is happening and the Cowboys could be in for a very rude shock on Monday night at Dairy Farmers Stadium. The home side has the ability to compete for short while against the Storm, but will not be able to match their intensity for the full 80 minutes. Cameron Smith the chief destroyer once again and suitably assisted by an army of robots who stick to a game plan and punish the home side for any mistakes.

My tip: Melbourne 30-12

Paully's Picks - Round 2

Parramatta Eels v Penrith Panthers

If Rugby League teams are truly 'only as good as their last game', this one is an easy tip. However, beware a wounded football team such as the Panthers especially this week when they face their Western Sydney arch enemies, the Eels at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night. The finest league fans from Mt Druitt to Merrylands will be out in force for this one and they will see a continuation of the intense rivalry that exists between these clubs.

Can the Panthers play any worse than they did last week? Will they be affected by the short turnaround after playing in sweltering conditions last Sunday? Will league legend Petero Civoniceva have to put up with more personal attacks from the Parramatta faithful? No, no and no. The experience in the Penrith club shines through as Luke Lewis and Michael Jennings turn up to bring the Eels back down to earth. Lachlan Coote a standout for the visitors.

My tip: Penrith 24-14

Canberra Raiders v Brisbane Broncos

Matt Orford makes his debut for the Raiders on Friday night and he must be salivating at the thought of playing behind this Canberra forward pack. Not to downplay the memorable Northern Eagles pack from 2000 or the premiership winning Manly crew from 2008, but the Dally M winning halfback has not played NRL football for more than a year and will be given ample space to find his groove in this match.

He'll need it too. The Broncos will be desperate to win this one after losing their home opener last week and this desperation will keep the scores close. Unfortunately for Broncos fans, close enough won’t be good enough as the Raiders forwards plough through the likes of Anderson, Glenn and Gillett and finish over the top of the visitors. This match is also a testament to the under 20s competition; a total of 12 players from the 2008 NYC Grand final between the Raiders and Broncos appear here. Fantastic.

My tip: Canberra 24-16

Melbourne v Gold Coast

Even though they've only played one match with an overhauled roster, the Storm seem to have announced their intentions to play a grinding style of football in the hopes of winning with their defence. Probably a smart move considering the attacking weapons they have lost since last season's infamous demise. The Titans, on the other hand, must be cursing the NRL scheduling process as they face arguably the two best defensive teams in the competition in rounds 1 and 2.

Pummelled by the Dragons last week, Scott Prince and company must work on something extra this week to beat Melbourne, in Melbourne, on Saturday night. To add to the visitors struggles, they will again be without 2 of their most experiences players in Anthony Laffranchi and Nathan Friend. Too much to overcome for mine. The home side win by smothering the Titans attack and scraping through using the masterful skills of Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk in a low scoring affair.

My tip: Melbourne 14-10

West Tigers v NZ Warriors

The Warriors were never able to find a rhythm last week against a disciplined Parramatta team and they won't find things any easier on Saturday night. The Tigers, after underperforming last Monday, come home to Leichardt Oval where Benji Marshall will no doubt receive a hero’s welcome from his most faithful fans and will be hoping to receive similar support from his forwards. The Tigers pack is already hampered by injury.

So, with the scene set and home side on market as favourites, I'll stick with the bookies and tip that Robbie Farah has a blinder and the Warriors fail to overcome the loss of key playmakers James Maloney and Manu Vatuvei. Keep an eye on 22 year old five-eighth Isaac John, playing only his 9th NRL match for the Warriors and facing Benji Marshall in what should be quite an occasion for this junior Kiwi. Tigers to good and too fast out wide.

My tip: Tigers 30-14

North Queensland v Newcastle

Both big winners in round 1 and both obviously improved from an off-season of soul searching. Did the Cowboys get in the room of mirrors and take a good, long, hard look at themselves? Or are they improved simply because Matt Bowen's knees have finally healed? Were they that bad last year? Or was Jonathan Thurston simply too damaged to perform at his world beating best? Am I going to ask any more questions?

No. You can see where I am going with this... defending the Cowboys' performance last year is difficult, but they already appear to be a different club and more importantly, fully fit. The Knights showed they are of a similar ilk last week at Penrith and now get to enjoy more steamy conditions in Townsville. This heat will bring them undone at crucial times on Saturday night as the Cowboys continue their resurgence, but only just in what shapes up to be a beauty.

My tip: North Queensland 20-18

South Sydney v Canterbury-Bankstown

If Shane Richardson and Russell Crowe can learn anything about how to recruit halves in the NRL, they need look no further than their opposition on Sunday afternoon at Homebush. Whilst the combination of Chris Sandow and the mercurial John Sutton continue to struggle for consistency, the new pair at Belmore delivered a seamless display on debut for the Bulldogs. Not that Crowe wants to replace his halves - I would never suggest such a thing.

Trent Hodkinson and Kris Keating unveiled a patient and controlled style for Canterbury last week and if they can produce more of the same it could choke the life out of the home side. I'm tipping they do and the Dogs defence does the rest. More importantly, tune in to see Mick Ennis and Isaac Luke go head to head; fingers crossed Ennis packs the first scrum with some words of encouragement for his opposite number. Not sure what to say about the Idris v Inglis battle, which is apt because this will likely leave you speechless as well.

My tip: Canterbury-Bankstown 30-24

Sydney Roosters v Manly Warringah

A lot to like about the Roosters, but a lot to doubt about the Sea-Eagles with their captains injured and a new halfback doing it tough before hopefully finding his feet in first grade. Dale Cherry-Evans might want to take notes when he looks up and sees Mitchell Pearce, Braith Anasta and perhaps Todd Carney leading a potent attack around the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Perhaps just take a mental note - might look odd if you carry a pen and paper onto the pitch.

The Bondi machine rolls on and notches up 2 from 2 to start the season. Good news for Manly fans though as David 'the wolfman' Williams makes his return but that is where your joy will end. For the rest of us, there will be no joy in any of this as the battle of the silvertails plays out its 117th match. For the thousands of Roosters and Eagles fans in attendance; and the millions hating you around the world.... enjoy your wine and cheese.

My tip: Roosters 48-14

Cronulla-Sutherland v St George Illawarra

Mis-match of the round. Breaking in a new combination at 6 and 7 takes time and for Cronulla's Wade Graham and Albert Kelly, there will be no tougher test this season. The Dragons defence has allowed an average of just over 12 points per match over the past 50 rounds of Rugby League. Ridiculous. Cronulla, on the other hand, have scored an average of around 14 points over this same period.

So, with those fascinating stats firmly entrenched in your memory, do you believe that Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan can deliver a miracle to Sharks fans that have been waiting so patiently for a win over their arch rivals? Neither do I. Also, if you are desperate for one more statistics on this match, note that since the Wayne Bennett era began in 2009, Cronulla has scored a total of 14 points in a combined 4 local derbies. More of the same here.

My tip: St George Illawarra 30-0

Paully's Picks - Round 1

Eastern Suburbs v South Sydney

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages: Welcome to season 2011 of the toughest competition in the world. So, without wasting any more time with the likes of Tony Greig, Peter Roebuck and Michael Clarke, let’s go to the Sydney Football Stadium this Friday night for what shapes up to be a cracking season opener between the Roosters and South Sydney.

Arch enemies? Yes. A violent history? Yes. Book of Feuds? Whatever.  This match will be a test, once again, for the enigmatic halves pairing of Sutton and Sandow, especially considering they must overcome the Roosters elite, proven pair of halves in Mitchell Pearce and Braith Anasta. This is where the game will be won or lost with two great forwards packs belting each other for 80 minutes. The class of the Roosters gets them home.
My tip: Roosters 27-18

Brisbane v North Queensland

Must be a welcome distraction to have Rugby League back in Queensland after the summer they have had. It must also be a welcome distraction for the Broncos to play football rather than worrying about who their coach for 2011 would be.  So, with everyone in joyous rapture to be playing footy again, allow me to take this opportunity to say how happy I am that future Immortal Darren Lockyer is going round again. Speaking of Lockyer, reports suggest he is fitter than ever and this can only be dangerous for the Cowboys.

To win, the visitors will need Aaron Payne to find his form from a few years ago, they’ll need Ray Thompson to play beyond his years in support of Jonathan Thurston and they will need to match the speed and enthusiasm of a Broncos back-line whose average age must be around 14 (statistic not official). Until the Cowboys prove otherwise, punters will doubt they can do any of the above.

My tip: Brisbane 24-18

NZ Warriors v Parramatta Eels

On paper, as many would have seen by now, the Eels starting 13 reads like a trial match line-up. However, reports suggest that Stephen Kearney is rewarding the hardest trainers in his reputedly vicious pre-season work outs. This means that Parra may not fade late in games and may play with a renewed spirit, but we predict the same problems that hindered the Eels 2010 tilt rear their ugly head in this match.

Mortimer and Robson struggle to find enough points, Nathan Hindmarsh makes 75 tackles and Jarryd Hayne doesn’t come looking for the ball often enough. The Warriors will capitalise with exactly the opposite. A potent scrum base, a shared effort in defence and their best players knowing when and where to inject themselves. Home ground advantage and Manu Vatuvei give NZ the edge with James Maloney a standout.
My tip: Warriors 26-12

Gold Coast v St George Illawarra

Big effort by the defending premiers to get their best team on the field for this match after essentially playing 2 ‘big games’ already this year. The Charity Shield is not simply a trial match; and of course the World Club Challenge win was impressive. The Dragons will not be fatigued from this and as always will bring their impenetrable defensive line to Skilled Park on Saturday night to face the Titans.

The home side will be disciplined, aggressive, honest and enthusiastic. This approach would normally get them a win but against St George Illawarra, it may not be enough. The visitors will see Greg Bird attacking their right side, and strangle it. They will see Scott Prince floating across field, picking up hole runners; they strangle it. The speed of the Titans superb wingers, Mead and Gordon? choke the life out of them. Saints defend as they do and come away with the 2 points.
My tip: St George Illawarra 18-12

Melbourne v Manly

A genuine rivalry exists between these two clubs. They’ve faced each other in two recent Grand Finals, one recent semi final, and a number of other matches that have erupted with fists flying. Fingers crossed for more of the same. Although Melbourne’s roster has changed significantly, their fire-breathing, fury spitting, anger filled coach will no doubt be on a mission to breathe fire, spit fury and fill his players with anger.

You can count on Des Hasler bringing much of the same intensity as two old foes meet again at AAMI Park on Saturday night. After all had settled down though, Cameron Smith will prove to be the best player on the field with a masterful display to get his side their first official premiership points in 5 years. It will be close though, with the winner decided in the final moments.
My tip: Melbourne 17-16

Canberra v Cronulla

Right.... The Joel Monaghan era has officially ended in our nation’s capital so let’s not make any further mention of the past. The Raiders have a bright future but they’ll need to have the tails up for this one. The visiting Sharks will be like a dog with a bone if they get a sniff of the two points on offer.  However, David Furner will be hoping that you can teach an old dog new tricks when he hands the leash to Matt Orford to guide his team around the park.

If the Sharks focus solely on Orford though, they will be barking up the wrong tree as the home side has many weapons on the field. A powerful forward pack will leave Cronulla feeling as sick as a dog, but not before Paul Gallen urges them to fight like cats and dogs in this match at Canberra Stadium. Unfortunately for Gallen, it’s a dog eat dog world and I’m tipping the fearsome combination of Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and David Shillington emerge as top dogs. Guess I just couldn’t let sleeping dogs lie.
My tip: Canberra 24-14

Penrith v Newcastle

A lot to like about the Panthers at home on a Sunday, especially with the forward pack they have. Kevin Kingston is a favourite of this blog and will hook the scrum with one of the games most promising young front rowers in Tm Grant, and hooking his other arm over one of the greatest ever, Petero Civoniceva. This could be enough to give Luke Walsh and a healthy Lachlan Coote the space they need to score plenty for the home side.

These two clubs have a history of playing in high scoring matches, especially when conditions suit as they should this Sunday afternoon. For the Knights, not much has changed from last year; Chris Houston and Neville Costigan will toughen them up, but keep an eye on Beau Henry. The Knights five-eighth makes his first great debut after starring in the under 20s competition. His first experience in the NRL will be to listen to Travis Burns sledge him for 80 minutes. Enjoy.
My tip: Penrith 36-26

Canterbury Bankstown v Wests Tigers

Great start to Monday Night football for season 2011. The Bulldogs faithful will expect more from their players as the memory of last year’s disappointment still stains them. However, both of these clubs have enough experience in them to know better than to throw all their eggs in the round 1 basket. Although, Mick Ennis and Robbie Farah may not be able to help themselves and this matchup alone will be worth the price of admission.

Yes, the dogs have recruited well but it may take their new ‘spine’ a few weeks to get combinations down to a fine art. This will result in a lack of direction and communication in the early rounds and the Tigers should feast on this confusion. Highlights in this one also include the battle between Jamal Idris and Chris Lawrence; and Matt Utai vs The High Ball. Benji uses football to forget and the Tigers get off to a flyer.
My tip: Wests 27-20
