Paully's Picks - 2011 Grand Final

Manly Sea Eagles v New Zealand Warriors

And then there were two.
This decider represents a changing of the guard when it comes to the style of footy considered successful in the NRL. For so long, the ruck tactics and defensive dominance of teams like the Melbourne Storm and St George Illawarra were winning premierships. The Manly Sea-Eagles and the New Zealand Warriors do it a little differently, they simply want to score tries and bash people in defence. Do not confuse this approach as not playing percentage and disciplined football, but patience and control are bywords of their football philosophy, rather than the be-all and end-all.

This match also represents the coming of age of two very special footballers. Make no mistake about Kieran Foran and his opposite number, James Maloney; they are the real superstars of their respective clubs and represent a return to glory of the dominant number 6. What a return this is. The two infant halfbacks in this match are playing out of their skin and with the world at their feet, but they’d be lost little children without their respective number 6’s.
Manly have been the best in so many areas across the park this season and they bring that consistency to ANZ stadium on Sunday night as their biggest weapon. Rookie halfback Daly Cherry-Evans has been in the spotlight this week after a magnificent season. Not to mention a performance beyond belief for a man so young in the Eagles’ prelim final against the Broncos. As always, his forwards deserve plenty of credit and this is where Manly hold the edge. They aim-up during the opening exchanges but are fit enough to have plenty left in the tank to destroy you late, as proven in the Cowboys match in week 1 of the semis.

The underdogs from Auckland, however, bring a huge level of belief in their ability and confidence must be sky high in the Warriors camp after laying waste to the premiership dreams of some big names. Benji and the Tigers? Gone. Bellamy and the Storm? Bye bye. Now it’s Manly’s turn and if the ‘visitors’ are to be any chance, it will once again be up to their senior players to step forward and give the kiwi youngsters a helping hand in the biggest game of their lives so far. Mannering, Luck and Maloney will be the standouts but Johnson and Locke will need to deliver something special for New Zealand to take home the trophy.
In the end, it will be too much to ask for Ivan Cleary’s men. The Eagles will have the experience and the killer instinct when it counts in this match. The opening 20 minutes will see them dominate in defence as Glenn Stewart comes out in a blaze of pent up anger and then the cool head of Kieran Foran takes over to release the superior talent of the silvertails’ backline. Plenty of superstars on show in this one and on the biggest stage of all, the Manly Sea Eagles will be last men standing in season 2011. This will be a beauty.

My tip: Manly 25-12
Clive Churchill Medallist prediction: Kieran Foran

Paully's Picks - Finals week 3

Manly Sea Eagles v Brisbane Broncos

Free bus rides or no free bus rides, big crowd or no big crowd, these two clubs will be ready for a monumental game of rugby league on Friday night at the SFS. Even though some fans can’t help but feel robbed after learning of Darren Lockyer’s omission from this match, we will still be treated to a beauty. In fact, the opening exchanges become all the more important as Manly will not want to be chasing any points against the now heavy underdogs from Brisbane.

The Broncos forwards will be superb, their exciting and speedy backline will give everything they have, but unfortunately for them and all who believe in fairy tales, the visitors will not have enough to get through. Kieran Foran elevates his reputation even further with a mighty performance as the Sea Eagles come out blazing from two weeks rest and reach another Grand Final. The Broncos will struggle to turn possession into points and when Manly get their chances, look for Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart to do the damage. Eagles the first team into the big one.

My tip: Manly 20-12

Melbourne Storm v New Zealand Warriors

First and foremost, credit where it is due; Magnificent effort by both clubs to reach the prelim final when not many would have picked them to do so and when other rosters looked more likely to come this far. Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk have done wonders for the Storm, again, to have them 80 minutes away from the GF. James Maloney has worked a similar brand of magic to lead the Warriors to such success and come Saturday night at AAMI Park, he will need to be every bit the magician to get past the home side.

The Storm’s defence presents another huge challenge for Ivan Cleary and his men. It is a proverbial brick wall that has allowed an average of just over 12 points per game through the season and will be even more resolute at home after a week off. The visitors will not be given many opportunities as Melbourne turn every play-the-ball into peak hour at central station; crowded, slow and a little smelly. If the visitors can overcome this snail’s pace style of footy and can score at least 3 tries – they win. They won’t. The grind wins again.

My tip: Melbourne 14-10

Paully's Picks - Finals week 2

West Tigers v NZ Warriors

Before Warriors coach Ivan Cleary moves to Penrith in a few weeks time, the biggest challenge of his career stands like a mountain in front of him. How to get the New Zealand Warriors back from the 'dead'. Last week's game against the Broncos was arguably their most disappointing big match performance in the club's history. Perhaps their fans should not have expected too much from such an inexperienced spine.

There-in lies the key, again, to why the Tigers will move ahead in this year’s premiership race. Robbie Farah's combination with Benji Marshall will simply be too much to handle for the visitors at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers forwards are fresh and will be in the right places at the right time in this match as their collective experience wins well over a much improved, but ultimately out-matched New Zealand team. Can't see the Tigers not being ready for this.

My tip: Wests 30-12

Brisbane Broncos v St George Illawarra Dragons

An epic battle awaits the 50,000 strong at Suncorp, as well as the soaring number of footy fans up and down the eastern seaboard who will be glued to their television sets. The Broncos will bring a perfectly balanced combination of youth and experience to face the reigning premiers who have, in the past, balanced a record breaking defence with a clinical and patient attack. The question is, can they still deliver on the big stage or has their time passed?

Dragons fans should be prepared for the latter. Even though the smart money says Wayne Bennett will have them perfectly prepared for Saturday's night's blockbuster, it won't be enough to match up against the home side. Alex Glenn's performance last week reminded some of the great Brad Clyde and he will again be a standout against two of the best in Beau Scott and Ben Creagh. A juicy confrontation but can't help but feel that this is not Darren Lockyer's last game.

My tip: Brisbane 19-12

Paully's Picks - Finals Week 1

Wests Tigers v St George Illawarra Dragons

Make no mistake, this game will be played at sudden death speed and will keep you enthralled until the final moments are played out. Put simply, that’s just what the Tigers do. Coaches Sheens and Bennett, with two lifetimes of rugby league experience, have their respective clubs at peak fitness for this match. It is no coincidence that both clubs essentially have their best 17 available on Friday night at Homebush to kick of the 2011 finals.

Form has proven less important than fitness for the Dragons and the Tigers so tune in to see the fittest and the fastest go head to head. Watching Beau Scott go face to face with Benji Marshall and probably instigate two or three ‘dust ups’ will be a highlight as will round two of the ‘race riot’ between Robbie Farah and Dean Young. NRL footy at its finest and in the end, the Dragons defence is again the winner in an absolute pearler between two ‘traditional’ Sydney teams. Always a winning formula.

My tip: St George Illawarra 16-14

Brisbane Broncos v NZ Warriors

A big test for the many youngsters in this game as the Warriors travel to Brisbane on Saturday night to face the Broncos. Names like Beale and Reed... Locke and Johnson.... may well be superstars in the future but semi final football has a very different learning curve. They will be under pressure and that is when the cream rises to the top. Or is it when we separate the men from the boys? Will we get rocks or diamonds? I’m rambling due to semi final excitement.

Either way – the experience in the Broncos team will shine brighter in another close match between these clubs. Lockyer, Hannant, Hodges and Wallace keep their heads when this game is decided in the final 10 minutes but no doubt it will be a classic. With James Maloney and Feleti Mateo leading the way, the Warriors have plenty of weapons and will put a scare through the 50,000 screaming Queenslanders at Suncorp, but will not be able to hold on.

My tip: Brisbane 22-20

Manly Sea Eagles v North Queensland Cowboys

A huge ask for the Cowboys. Winners of only 1 from their past 5 and losing their most dangerous ball runner in Tariq Sims, they face the Sea Eagles with their season on the line. The only saving grace for the visitors is that their captain and superstar Jonathan Thurston is possibly the only man capable of overcoming these odds and combined with the venue change away from Brookvale, the Cowboys do have a sniff.

Manly’s defence is second best in the competition and their attack is outright first. With the return of Kieran Foran, they will be brutal, they will be potent and they will start with a ferocity saved especially for the finals. The Cowboys will match this intensity early but won’t have enough to last the 80 minutes. Rookie of the Year Daly Cherry-Evans plays his first ever post season match against the best halfback in the world and this will be a highlight among many.

My tip: Manly 24-18

Melbourne Storm v Newcastle Knights

The Knights have nothing to lose and will give this game an almighty crack on Sunday afternoon at AAMI Stadium. Early in the match, they win the battle of the forwards when experienced hitters like Neville Cositgan, combined with the youthful animosity of Joel Edwards, give the Storm a few headaches during the opening exchanges: until the wrestling begins and Melbourne slow things down to a crawl.

Unfortunately for Knights fans, the Minor Premiers’ defence holds strong and come the final quarter of this match, Cameron Smith will take over and ensure Melbourne’s week off. A courageous finish to a difficult season for Newcastle but they will go out with a bang. Keep an eye on everyone’s favourite footballer, Akuila Uate in this one – he will no doubt be launching himself into the best defence in the competition and you won’t want to miss it.

My tip: Melbourne 23-10

Paully's Picks - Round 26

Newcastle v South Sydney

How time flies. Round 26 kicks off with a do or die match as Souths head up the F3 to take on the Knights at Ausgrid Stadium. The Bunnies are playing a good brand of football lately but the pressure of this match will be huge. Win and you're in, lose and it's off to Russell Crowe's farm for Mad Monday. Looks like the latter.

Knights fans will be fuelled up and fired up for Friday night in their annual 'old boys' game and they will reach fever pitch as Adam MacDougall plays his last home game. Hard to see the bunnies overcoming the early onslaught and even though Bulldogs fans will be praying for a draw, it will be the home side whose prayers are answered. Kurt Gidley the stand out.

My tip: Newcastle 30-20

St George Illawarra v Penrith

The Penrith Panthers come to the end of a forgettable season which started with a 40 point drubbing in round 1 and could very well finish the same way. It’s been a tough one for the Mountain Men and they head to Wollongong with not much to play for but pride. The Dragons, however, are still desperate to find a touch of last year’s September form and this is a prime opportunity.

Saints will stroll through the visitors 'b grade' front row and throttle them right up the middle. The Dragons backline should have a field day after this platform has been set as WIN Stadium bids farewell to Mark Gasnier. Must make mention of Luke Lewis here, he has every reason to rest his broken body but doesn’t need any reason to play. A credit to his love of the game and his bravery.

My tip: St George Illawarra 28-8

New Zealand v North Queensland

With the chance of hosting a semi final all but gone, these two clubs come together at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night looking to find some rhythm. The Cowboys hobbled over the line against Cronulla last week and the Warriors were unlucky to lose to St George Illawarra; they'll both be keen to warm up well for next week.

The home side not only warm up, but they heat up at home to farewell the Warriors faithful in their final game in Auckland. Quality football on display from two quality teams as they give us a taste of what’s to come. Great matchups all over the park as the Locke/Johnson combination shows the Bowen/Thurston combination that youth can beat experience.

My tip: New Zealand 18-14

Cronulla v Wests

Saturday night at 'Shark Park' - for one more time in 2011. Fans in the Shire have had another season to forget but they will be treated to a spirited display as the home side does their best to finish the season on a high. In fact they will play with no pressure at all and this could be dangerous for the visiting Tigers. The Sharks will not lay down.

Prepare yourself for plenty of fun between noted nigglers and future Sharks, Bryce Gibbs and Liam Fulton as they face Paul Gallen and Jeremy Smith. But once all is said and done and the forwards get out of the way, Benji Marshall grabs this game by the barrels and rips the home side apart. His combination with Robbie Farah is still the most entertaining football to watch in the NRL.

My tip: Wests 28-14

Gold Coast v Parramatta

Preston Campbell's legacy to Rugby League is obvious. He is a beacon of light and hope for the indigenous community as well as the many young footballers who don't weigh 100kgs at age 13. As a footballer, you will struggle to find anyone with faster feet and better instincts - Presto was a pleasure to watch.

Speaking of which, fingers crossed the people of the Gold Coast realise this and come to watch their captain one last time. The Parramatta Eels may not draw the biggest crowd of the season, but this match will be played with plenty of spirit nonetheless. Edge goes to the home side as they claw their way in front in the closing stages of a good match to end a horrible season.

My tip: Gold Coast 20-18

Canterbury Bankstown v Canberra

If by miracle, the Knights and the Bunnies draw their match on Friday night (stay with me here people), this match will turn into a Father's Day frenzy at Homebush with 40,000 streaming through the gates. If not, the Andrew Ryan farewell match will be a memorable one. He is one of toughest in the land.

The man they call 'Bobcat' will be remembered by the Belmore faithful as the man who saved the 2004 premiership from slipping through their fingers. As a second rower, he is up there with Kennedy, Fitzgibbon and Hindmarsh and a tip of the hat to him. Dugan v Barba a highlight as disappointing seasons come to an end for both clubs but the 'Dogs rip it up late.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 40-18

Brisbane v Manly

While the press in Sydney have basically camped out at Brookvale during the week, the Brisbane Broncos have been preparing an official farewell for their captain and favourite son, Darren Lockyer, in relative peace and quiet across the border. They have secured 3rd place on the ladder and are building towards something special.

The middle leg of your Sunday triple header will be a beauty but very difficult to tip the Eagles without Kieran Foran. The visitors have plenty of depth and plenty of speed in their backline to match up well with their hosts, but without Foran they will miss some direction. Manly won't be able to spoil the party as Lockyer shines again.

My tip: Brisbane 24-12

Eastern Suburbs v Melbourne

This booze ban seems to be working. Makes you wonder how hard the Roosters were hitting the soup before they decided enough was enough. They have won 3 straight now and youngsters like Aidan Guerra and Jake Friend are reaping the rewards of this healthy approach to life. One game to go and they can get stuck in with a clear conscience.

NRL CEO David Gallop will be on hand for an awkward post match presentation of the J.J. Giltinan shield as Melbourne wrap up the minor premiership. An amazing effort considering what they have been through. However, that will be nothing compared to what Kings Cross will go through when the Roosters hit the strip for Mad Monday after a month off the drink.

My tip: Melbourne 26-6

Paully's Picks - Round 25

Manly v Melbourne
The penultimate round of the season proper begins at Brookvale Oval on Friday night and what better way to give footy fans an early taste of semi final action. The Eagles host the Melbourne Storm in a match between arguably the two most successful teams of the last half decade. In that time, Des Hasler has led the Eagles to two Grand Finals for one win – Bellamy’s record remains in a shroud of cap controversy but his talents can never be questioned.

And neither can the spirit of these two football teams. They will play with an intensity above and beyond the rest of the competition and fingers crossed for some early, heated exchanges. Home ground advantage and the absence of Storm play maker Cooper Cronk gives the edge to Manly but seeing the Storm at $2.20 mid week is mighty tempting. A colossal contest and the Eagles with just a touch too much.

My tip: Manly 18-12

Parramatta v Eastern Suburbs

Parramatta fans could not help but feel disappointed at their results this year, and with a wooden spoon in sight for the first time in eons, they would be feeling a little nervous as well. But here is a chance for the Eels faithful to reward a huge effort from an under-manned and out-gunned bunch of brave footballers – their last home game of the season.

The Roosters seem to have cast aside the dead weight that may have been too heavy for them to carry this year – and their results have improved as such. They bring good enough form to Parra Stadium on Friday night to continue the misery for first year coach Stephen Kearney. This coaching caper is a tough gig and Kearney and Brian Smith must be desperate for a break, and a win. Smith gets his wish.

My tip: Roosters 20-18

Canterbury Bankstown v Newcastle

The Bulldogs seem to be building momentum, they seem to be showing signs of improvement, their superstars seem to be finally playing to potential – but for what? Bulldogs fans seem to think their team can win by 50 in these last two weeks of the season and snag a finals berth. They never stop believing but ultimately, the Knights don’t need to stretch as far.

Newcastle currently sit in 8th position and have everything to play for. Jarrod Mullen, again, will be the key to any success and this time, he will deliver. Amongst a season of disappointment for the Belmore club, youngsters Josh Reynolds and Joel Romelo have been revelations. Romelo’s battle with Ryan Stig should be a beauty, as should the Morris v Mad Dog battle out wide. Knights tough it out.

My tip: Newcastle 24-20

Canberra v Penrith

The Raiders have broken a number of records this season. Not to kick them while they are down, but let’s just say those records will not make the honour roll at Canberra Leagues Club. However, they still have a chance to get something positive out of a horror season and give one of their favourite sons the farewell he deserves.

Alan Tongue plays his last home game on Saturday night in our nation’s capital and nobody has earned the right to finish with a win more than this man. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he has injured every joint in his body playing Rugby League for the Green Machine. Tongue starts at hooker as the Panthers come to spoil the party. They won’t.

My tip: Canberra 30-20

North Queensland v Cronulla

The Cowboys would be happy to head home after last weekend’s controversy against South Sydney and their fans will turn out in numbers for the Townsville club’s last home game of the regular season. A win here keeps them in the running for a home semi final and keeps them on the front foot heading into September.

The Cronulla Sharks, meanwhile, must be counting down the minutes to end season 2011. Albert Kelly has been named to make his return from injury in this match and a rude shock will await him. Jonathan Thurston runs rings around the Sharks backline and come late in the game, will be thinking about for and against. This one could be bad for the visitors.

My tip: North Queensland 40-16

St George Illawarra v New Zealand

Tipsters would be keen to stick with the Dragons, even after such a horror run of form but they might want to be wary here. More so than the Dragons looking completely exhausted – more so than Jamie Soward feeling the effects of a highly emotional representative season, more so than a number of Dragons not used to being in a slump... the in-form Warriors come to town and this is dangerous for the home side.

Dragons coach Wayne Bennett seems a little tired as well, but coaching two teams at once would be difficult for anybody. The Dragons stingy defence will hold the Warriors in check for only so long until the Locke/Johnson combination finds a hole or two – then its curtains. James Maloney has another blinder to match his halves partner and the visitors pull off an upset.

My tip: New Zealand 16-12

Brisbane v South Sydney

In the round 16 fixture between these clubs, South Sydney were too good under heavy rain and almost swamp like conditions. On Sunday afternoon at 3pm in Brisbane, a possible shower or two might swoop over Suncorp Stadium but it won’t be enough to slow down the home side this time. Darren Lockyer and his band of young Broncos have definitely put the foot down at the right end of the season.

The Bunnies have also hit the accelerator and are knocking on the door of the semi finals but this one might be too much to ask – even considering the form they are in. The Broncos pack shifts into gear early and Lockyer does the rest. Keep an eye on Isaac Luke in this match; he could fall in and out of consciousness before your very eyes, without any warning. An outstanding talent.

My tip: Brisbane 32-16

Wests v Gold Coast

The good folk of Sydney’s west have not seen the Tigers play at Campbelltown since a round 16 loss to the Bulldogs. Football returns to the flannelette capital on Monday night as the Gold Coast Titans travel a long way in the hopes of causing a huge upset to avoid the wooden spoon. Unfortunately for Titans fans, the hosts have everything going for them and this could be a cricket score.

Lote Tuqiri is named to return from injury, Benji Marshall is a free man, the Tigers play their last home game of the season proper and just to add to the flavour, they are still in the hunt for a top 4 finish and a home semi final. The Titans come out with pride as they always do but do not have much else in their bag. Robbie Farah the standout in a big win.

My tip: Wests 34-12

Paully's Picks - Round 24

Melbourne v St George Illawarra

A month or so ago, this was the most anticipated match of the season and one that league fans had circled in their calendars as must see. Not to say it won’t be an intense game of football, but for those of us who love to see spirited defence balanced with exciting attack, you may want to wait for the other Friday might match this week.

The Dragons are desperate to return to early season form, which means they will go back to a drawing board that reads, “grind, grind, grind”. This will not be pretty. The Storm will do much of the same... holding the opposition up in tackles that resemble a group hug, but there will be nothing cuddly about this one. Melbourne at home too good in a defensive arm wrestle.

My tip: Melbourne 16-8

South Sydney v North Queensland

With the Bunnies in this kind of form and carrying this much confidence, anything seems possible now. With the Cowboys in town and Jonathan Thurston clear of any cobwebs, anything IS possible in this match at Homebush on Friday night. Match of the Round for mine and perhaps the home side’s season on the line; who would have guessed??

North Queensland’s away record suggests they might not be prepared for this encounter against the resurgent Redfern club but rest assured, they will rip in. Matt Scott should lead the charge and will be ably supported by a couple of Sims brothers up front. Speaking of which, if Tariq runs into Dave Taylor, the old Olympic Stadium will be rocked to its very foundations. Awesome.

My tip: North Queensland 28-22

Gold Coast v Canberra

This is a danger game for the visiting Raiders. In fact anything could happen if this group of young footballers are let loose on Cavill Avenue with the smell of Mad Monday perhaps too strong to resist. Hence the danger. Fingers crossed Canberra coach David Furner has booked a flight home for the boys from our nation’s capital on Saturday night, rather than Sunday morning.

The Titans, on the other hand, have been dealing with a season of horror since May but are the more professional outfit and this will be made abundantly clear right from kick off. The Titans young backline feed off the energy of Preston Campbell and may even learn a few things from him as well: before it’s too late. Home side drag this one out and finish stronger.

My tip: Titans 26-8

Penrith v New Zealand

The coming of age of the Warriors spine has been a testament to coach Ivan Cleary’s patience, vision and teaching skills. On Saturday night at the foot of the mountains, he gets a small insight into what similar challenges he will face when coaching the opposition in a few months time. But before any of that happens, James Maloney and the rest of this dangerous quartet will teach the Panthers a lesson.

The Warriors defence has been the catalyst for some magnificent attacking displays by their army of speedsters. Shaun Johnson and Kevin Locke will again find the space they need to burn up Centrebet Stadium and the visitors win again. Interesting to watch step 1 of the Michael Jennings experiment at fullback whilst the battle of front rowers in this match will be a beauty.

My tip: New Zealand 24-12

Eastern Suburbs v Cronulla

More talent on the park in this match than their results suggest. Disappointing seasons for both clubs, especially the Roosters as they continue to try and salvage some pride after some forgettable moments on and off the field. The Sharks continue to struggle for points and will do so again at the SFS on Saturday night. Good news is that not too many people will see it.

If the Roosters and the Sharks play a game of football in front of 3000 fans and another 200 on pay TV.... did it really happen? You bet it did. The home side play chock full of confidence after last week’s big win in Wollongong and finish the season strong and sober. Keep an eye on Paul Gallen teaching a very young Roosters back row a thing or two about using your body as a battering ram.

My tip: Eastern Suburbs 26-18

Manly v Canterbury Bankstown

In the round 13 match between these clubs, Manly put the Bulldogs to the sword and a 38-4 score line was to be the catalyst for a crisis at Canterbury. The Belmore club have since fired their coach but suddenly seem to have some spirit under interim mentor Jim Dymock. Will this be enough to go to Brookvale Oval on Sunday afternoon and cause a major upset?

No. The Eagles play a similar style to the old Bulldogs teams and will punish the visitors early and often with a dominant performance up front. The class of their halves then take over and we will see exactly why Manly coach Des Hasler was not too distressed to see Trent Hodkinson leave last year. The Stewart brothers carve it up and end any hopes of a ‘Dogs revival.

My tip: Manly 30-14

Wests v Parramatta

In a recent article in a Sydney metro paper, Jarryd Hayne was labelled as no more than a decent winger or fullback. Apparently, he is simply not in the class of other superstars in his position such as Darren Lockyer, Kieran Foran and Josh McCrone. Assuming Hayne has been told of this attack, he gets his chance to prove otherwise as Parramatta head to Moore Park to play the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

The Eels’ superstar is on a hiding to nothing here: his club’s season is all but over, his backline ravaged by injury and his team on a horribly unlucky losing streak. Just for kicks, Benji Marshall and the red hot Wests Tigers await. Two years ago, when these two teams met in the corresponding fixture, the league universe was treated to a beauty. This time round, the Eels could be subject to humiliation.

My tip: Wests 30-12

Newcastle v Brisbane

Newcastle’s performance across the Tasman last week would have made believers out of most league fans. They were resolute in defence and just lacking a little cohesion in attack, they were also whacked with some ridiculous refereeing decisions but this is not something new to the NRL for season 2011. Jarrod Mullen seems to be hitting one of his purple patches and the Knights back row is hitting everything that moves.

All this points to a Monday Night beauty at Ausgrid stadium as Darren Lockyer and the Broncos come to town. The visitors have weapons all over the park and if given a sniff of the try line, will nearly always find a way across it. Alex Glenn, Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday will be charging at Ryan Stig and Mullen all night and if these young halves can handle the traffic, an upset is on the cards. They won’t.

My tip: Brisbane 23-10

Paully's Picks - Round 23

North Queensland v Brisbane

Plenty of reasons why this match at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday night is a must see and is your Match of the Round. A Queensland derby; D. Lockyer’s’ record breaking NRL appearance; the return of Jonathan Thurston and all when we are 3 weeks out from the semis with both clubs sitting inside the top 4. No wonder it will be a sell-out.

Big games like this are typically where the youngsters get a little too excited and the veterans stay nice and calm throughout. This means that kids like Tariq Sims, Ray Thompson and essentially the entire Broncos backline will be jumping out of their skin. A highlight among many in this match will be the opening 20 minutes when young Sims launches himself at everything in a Brisbane jersey, but the visitors launch back when the time is right.

My tip: Brisbane 24-20

Penrith v Wests

Interim Panthers coach Steve Georgallis seems like he is enjoying himself. His team are playing an improved style of football and have won a few games since he took over: but now it looks like he is just messing about whilst the boss is away. With the current Panthers CEO busy writing strongly worded emails to the NRL, Georgallis is enjoying his final weeks before a monster farewell party.

Blooding 19 year old Harry Seijka at number 6, Michael Jennings named at fullback, Kevin Kingston dropped to the bench for rookie Nafe Seluini? Safe to assume the Panthers have nothing to play for anyway, so why not mess around with the ingredients... The Tigers, meanwhile, are settling nicely for another run at the title and will dispatch the Panthers quickly and quietly.

My tip: Wests 24-10

NZ Warriors v Newcastle

In the Round 10 meeting between these clubs, the Warriors pulled off a mini upset of Newcastle at Ausgrid stadium with an impressive defensive performance. Led by Lance Hohaia and James Maloney, the visitors trailed for most of the match before destroying the Knights in the final 10 minutes to win comfortably. Hard to see a different result on Saturday at Mt Smart Stadium.

New Zealand would be aiming for one thing and one thing only; to push for a possible home semi final in week 1 of the playoffs. Newcastle will give it everything but home ground advantage and the Warriors class is too much to overcome. An exciting battle of the halves will take place as Shaun Johnson continues his impressive rookie season, as does the Knights’ Ryan Stig. A cracker.

My tip: New Zealand 24-18

Gold Coast v Melbourne

A tough one for the Titans. Crowds dwindling, their season in complete ruins, their coach stuck in hospital for three weeks, their halfback joining him... and finally, a wooden spoon beckoning to stir this boiling pot of misery. But before the nightmare ends and they can start fresh for 2012, the league leading Melbourne Storm are on their way up the coast to rub salt in the wounds.

Tough to see how the home side will score any points at all against the NRLs best defence especially with a spine that have never played together. Preston Campbell will finish his career at halfback and will turn up bravely, as he always has, in this match on Saturday night; but the Storm tighten their grip on the minor premiership and win for the first time ever at Skilled Park.

My tip: Melbourne 30-8

Parramatta v Manly

The Eels fighting spirit was broken last Monday night. 10 weeks of being bent over a proverbial barrel will do that to a football team and Stephen Kearney’s men simply had nothing left to give. Hard not to feel sorry for Parra, actually, but this is something Des Hasler and the visiting Sea Eagles will not do on Saturday night as they travel out west to continue a 65 year old rivalry.

In fact, fingers crossed that Hasler rips another dressing room door off its hinges, Kieran Foran gets right up in the face of Jarryd Hayne and a few die hard Eels fans still hold a grudge against their former favourite son, Jamie Lyon. Alas, we can only hope for all of the above as the truth will be something closer to a dominant performance by the visitors as they coast to another win.

My tip: Manly 30-12

Canberra v South Sydney

What to make of the Rabbitohs.... well, an outstanding fortnight of footy seems to have convinced bookies that they can head down to our nation’s capital and come away with the biscuits. They are early favourites to brave the frosty and freezing temperatures on Sunday afternoon in Canberra and if the Raiders don’t get too far ahead, this is exactly what the Bunnies will do.

Canberra will get off to a good start but when Chris Sandow and Dave Taylor finally warm up, Souths come roaring back to win and keep their very thin hopes of a top 8 finish alive. Greg Inglis up against Joel Thompson will be a highlight, or it could be a complete mis-match depending on the Raiders’ potential improvement from last week’s debacle in Newcastle. Smart money on a mis-match.

My tip: South Sydney 32-26

St George Illawarra v Eastern Suburbs

So the reigning premiers, in the thick of a losing streak, head back to the scene of their recent capitulation against South Sydney to try to turn their slump around. Wollongong still seems to be a graveyard for opposition teams, especially according to the bookies who have given the visiting Roosters a 16.5 point start. Punters must be convinced that the Dragons can’t possibly lose to the Roosters, can they?

No. Even with Jamie Soward most likely rested from this game, Saints will have enough in them to power to a good lead through their defence and then hold on in the final 20. This is something they have not been able to do recently but against the Roosters, they will not have to worry. Ben Creagh and Beau Scott lead from the front whilst Darius Boyd and Matt Cooper reignite the Dragons left side as Saints win for the first time in a month.

My tip: St George Illawarra 24-6

Cronulla v Canterbury Bankstown

As the sun sets on these two clubs’ 2011 efforts, a review shows they’ve had very similar years. The Sharks and Bulldogs both went on winning runs throughout the season and both believed they were genuine hopes of make the top 8. Their crashes have also been similarly horrific but the Sharks have never been accused by their fans of giving up - even when their fans number only a few hundred.

This Monday night at Toyota Stadium, these brave hundred will again return to club headquarters to witness a battle of two very good forward packs. Tolman and Kasiano v Snowden and Douglas will be a highlight whilst away from the ruck and physicality, Nathan Gardner and Ben Barba put on a dazzling display of footwork to entertain the masses. Dogs at the death.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 22-20

Paully's Picks - Round 22

Canterbury Bankstown v North Queensland

To kick off a great night of rugby league in Sydney on Friday, the Cowboys head to Homebush to take on the struggling Bulldogs. With ‘Dogs skipper Andrew Ryan announcing he will be retiring at season’s end, his farewell tour begins and his troops should respond accordingly. However, we’ve seen this all year from the Belmore club.

Motivation has been there but the performance has never followed suit. The visitors are playing, still, without their superstar Jonathan Thurston but this could only mean the difference between winning by 10 and winning by 20. North Queensland will do the former through their willing pack of forwards. Plenty of speed out wide to keep you entertained in this match as Matt Bowen and Ben Barba light it up.

My tip: North Queensland 30-20

West Tigers v St George Illawarra

A replay of last year’s semi final blockbuster to be played under lights at the traditional home of Rugby League in Sydney, the SFS. It does not get any better than this. Well.... it might but one can’t help but get excited. The Tigers attack seems to be coming together nicely at the right time of the season, but it’s a much more mature attack than we’ve seen previously. They are picking their spots.

No doubt these spots will be in the final 20 minutes of this match considering a) the Dragons’ recent performances and b) reports that Saints are being flogged at training in preparation for another finals run. If given any space, the battle of Lawrence v Gasnier and Cooper v Ayshford will be second only to watching Benji Marshall take on the brick wall that is the reigning premiers’ defence. A beauty.

My tip: St George Illawarra 20-16

Melbourne v Penrith

The Storm are simply in a different class here. Their smothering defence is the envy of the NRL and seemingly the most hated in the NRL to boot. Controversial wrestling tactics seem to be an issue, again, as we creep towards the semi finals but it is within the rules and it will drive the Panthers insane this Saturday night at AAMI Park.

If Penrith are to overcome the 14.5 start set by the bookies, their only hope will be to play as if they have nothing to lose and without any pressure. Considering half the club is leaving next year, it will not be much of a stretch for the Mountain Men but unfortunately for Panthers fans, winning this match will be. The Storm strangle them early (figuratively speaking of course) and race away to win.

My tip: Melbourne 20-6

Brisbane v NZ Warriors

A possible September preview and always an entertaining encounter as the Broncos host the Warriors on Saturday Night at Suncorp. Two clubs who have found success in 2011 without defence being their gateway to victory, the Broncos put 46 on the Sharks last week and the Warriors are winners of their last 4, averaging 33 points in attack over this run.

So, with a dry track underneath and plenty of talent and speed across the park, get set for a beauty as the youth brigade of Brisbane get stuck into a disciplined New Zealand outfit. The difference in this one, however, will not be the enthusiasm of the baby broncos but rather the supreme class of Darren Lockyer who outplays Warriors leader James Maloney when the game is on the line in a close one.

My tip: Brisbane 25-24

Cronulla v Gold Coast

Seems as though Sharks coach Shane Flanagan believes it’s time to blood a few youngsters in preparation for season 2012. That or he is foxing before this Saturday night’s match against the visiting Titans. Either way, it might be worth tuning in at 9.30pm on Saturday, for those who won’t be in attendance at Toyota Park, to perhaps introduce yourself to the likes of Ricky Leutele and Tyson Frizell.

For the couple of hundred fanatics who can make it to the old Shark Park, you deserve better than what might be served up here. No doubt Paul Gallen and Jeremy Smith will come out swinging as they play for pride here but there aint much else on the line. Fingers crossed Mark Minichiello continues his form and throws a few of his now infamous right hands at an unsuspecting Shark. Home team gets the nod here.

My tip: Cronulla 24-18

Newcastle v Canberra

The Knights have won 5 of their past 7 and found themselves almost locked in to a final 8 position. More proof, really, that you don’t need to play your best football until June or July to make the semis. Newcastle are certainly doing that as they cruise through the back end of a scheduling dream run. More importantly, they will also benefit from this confidence on Sunday afternoon against the Raiders.

Canberra are now at a difficult part of their 2011 tilt, asking themselves the tough questions that need to be asked by teams out of contention... Where are they going for their end of season trip? Is Mad Monday starting at Shillo’s place or elsewhere? And finally, can they avoid a repeat performance of last years’ Mad Monday abomination? Only time will tell.

My tip: Newcastle 30-16

Manly v Eastern Suburbs

The Eagles took a hit last week. Perhaps only one or two defensive errors and one refereeing error may have cost them victory but as the duchess said to the bishop – them’s the breaks. This week, at fortress Brookvale against the Roosters, they will have to commit at least 10 or 12 defensive errors to lose again. They won’t.

Manly coach Des Hasler will have them chomping at the bit before this match and the visitors will face an onslaught from the opening whistle. Young Sydney firebrand Jared Warea-Hargreaves may come in for some harsh treatment from his old team mates in what should be a physical battle up front, just how the Sea Eagles like it. Brett Stewart a stand out again.

My tip: Manly 28-8

South Sydney v Parramatta

A couple of old Sydney teams who have learnt the harsh lessons about Rugby League this year. For the Bunnies, they’ve learnt the hard way about depth, about injuries and about bad luck. For Parramatta, one simply needs to see that they have lost 6 of their past 7 matches by an average of just over 4 points. So close but nothing to show for it: indeed a harsh lesson.

On Monday night at ANZ Stadium, the Rabbitohs will find themselves falling back down to earth after last week’s remarkable win in Wollongong. The Eels will take full advantage of this distraction and keep the match close until the final whistle, but this time luck falls their way. Jarryd Hayne puts in a blinder and Parra’s defence turns up again. Reni Maitua also a standout for the visitors as he continues his impressive return to 1st grade.

My tip: Parramatta 24-18

Me or the TV?

So Channel 9 boss David Gyngell decides to give some advice to the NRL. Apparently the Greatest Game of All needs more commercial breaks, more stoppages during play to run more advertisements, therefore becoming a more TV friendly product and thus attracting more advertising dollars.

Article here.

Irony? Anyone?

As we finally come to the end of almost 15 years of media ownership of Rugby League and with TV rights to the NRL up for sale in what should be a heated competition, we see one of the front runners announce that in his humble opinion, we should slow down our game and have more commercials. Have we not had enough of being told by media executives how this sport should be run?

Have we not had the game stalled in 1st gear because every decision about the sport has been a reactive one? Or one that was designed to sell newspapers and increase pay TV subscriptions? As Roy Masters recently wrote, this is what the Super League War essentially was, a battle between two cable network broadcasters for ownership of the most powerful TV product in Australia, Rugby League.

Maybe I'm just a jaded fan, but....

David Gyngell, I respect your opinion and you may have a point regarding 15 second commercials during scrum breaks and other pauses during play, but this particular opinion smells like self serving excrement. Having said that, it’s what you are paid to do so really the onus here is on, again, the administrators of Rugby League or as it is now known: The Independent Commission.

If they are to be truly independent, their first step must be to ignore the opinions and sound bites of possible tenders who will say anything. This new governing body of Rugby League will be surrounded by glorified peddlers in the coming months so to arm themselves for the onslaught - here is some advice.

1. Think of the game itself, not of newspapers and pay TV, it will be a breath of fresh air. This means that perhaps we should treat Gyngell's comments as you should the ramblings of a door to door insurance salesman.

2. The people are the shareholders. There is no way any crowd should be less than 15,000 to any game. Do not slow down the game for TV and more to the point, do not listen to the media when it comes to running the game. We fans love the flow of Rugby League and this is what differentiates our sport from any other. That and the collisions. We have the better product with fewer stoppages than Union and stronger athletes than any other code.

3. We do not need 15 seconds of ads to top up the bank account. Marketed wisely, the State of Origin series could be our version of the 'Superbowl' when any commercial spot during the match would be prime real estate. Let's think bigger than reminding people about betting odds for 10 seconds during the footy.

4. Improve the product. Find a resolution to the one thing that slows rugby league down to the point where we are losing 10 seconds every ruck - the Wrestle. It is horrible to watch blokes twisting and turning and holding and squeezing during every set of six. There must be a way to limit the amount of time any tackle should take whilst the ball carrier is not immediately on the ground. Perhaps enforce a 3 second rule. Cap the time from point of contact to when defenders must release to no more than 3 seconds. How many referees do you need to count to 3? This is the one issue (regarding speed of the game) that brings us back to the field.

So, if the above is not a good place to start when thinking about how to market the game better to all our key stakeholders, then a worse place to start would be listening to a television executive. We've tried that and the only winners were Channel 9 and News Limited. The losers from this ownership design seem to be the clubs themselves who simply cannot make a profit without people coming through the gates. True that the next TV contract could bring a windfall for the clubs, so selling the game as a prime time spectacle for advertising is important but not more important than the product itself. We already have a billion dollar product. Slowing it down for another ad break will only ruin it for the fans.

Paully's Picks - Round 21

Brisbane v Cronulla

The second meeting of the season between these clubs after the round 13 match at Toyota Stadium was dominated by Brisbane. In fact after this loss, the Sharks reportedly went to the room of mirrors to have a good, long, hard look at themselves and promised to turn their season around. They won their next 4 but just to prove how hard the grind of the NRL is, they have since lost their last two by big margins.

Can they get motivated by this and turn another corner in this fluctuating season that is the Cronulla tilt of 2011? No. Even though the Broncos lost the ‘wrestle’ last week against Melbourne, this week they get to play footy again and they will. Darren Lockyer edges closer towards the curtain of his career by leading his troops to another demolition of the Sharks.

My tip: Brisbane 30-12

Manly v Wests Tigers

Match of the Round for mine: and don’t the people of the Central Coast deserve it. The recent announcement that the NRL’s expansion plans for the near future involve another Queensland team, rather than the mighty Bears, would have been a kick in the guts for this Rugby League nursery. Fingers cross they find some joy when the Eagles host Benji Marshall and his boys on Friday night.

They won’t be disappointed. Manly’s methodical and almost violent approach to its football, pitted against a Tigers team looking to come home with a wet sail and rip their way into the finals. Fantastic. The on-field battles between Chris Lawrence and Jamie Lyon, Benji facing Kieran Foran and two angry forward packs going head to head will ensure this is a beauty.

My tip: Manly 19-18

Eastern Suburbs v Canterbury

In beating the Eels last Friday and notching their first victory in 4 weeks, the Bulldogs did not show a lot of improvement but did step up their enthusiasm. Joel Romelo and Josh Reynolds led the way in this department in what could be a sign of the times at Belmore. The next generation of stars could be ready to replace this current crop.

Before they do though, the ‘Dogs attack still needs an overhaul as they have averaged just over 12 points per game in the last 10 rounds. The Roosters attack can sympathise with this plight but the boys from Bondi may not be able to do much else. Their cohesion is shot but their spirit seems, somehow, intact. This will keep them in the hunt for 70 minutes on Saturday, but will not get them home. Dogs in a tight one.

My tip: Canterbury 24-22

North Queensland v Penrith

Must give credit to the boys from Townsville. With a bit of luck, a monster pack of forwards and Matthew Bowen playing out of this world, they sit 4th on the ladder and have won 2 from 3 without Jonathan Thurston. Whilst it might be too early to tell if they can maintain this form for another few weeks, a tip of the hat to them nonetheless.

Bowen, in particular, is in white hot form and considering what he has been through and how others have fared after suffering similar injuries, he is special. Not too many athletes in world sport could come back the way he has after multiple knee surgeries. So, taking a rest from my position as president of the M. Bowen fan club, the edge here goes to the home team against a Panthers squad with a less than impressive away record.

My tip: North Queensland 26-20

NZ Warriors v Canberra

The statistics tell an interesting story in this match at Mt Smart stadium on Sunday. Well, more to the point it’s an obvious story. The away team in this fixture is very often up against it and understandably so: It’s a long trip. Whilst the Raiders would be high on confidence after tasting success at this venue last year, they will come to Auckland as underdogs and rightly so.

Even after their brilliant win against the Dragons last Monday Night, the visitors will struggle against a disciplined and in-form New Zealand outfit. James Maloney continues to impress to the point where he should be mentioned in the class of great five eighths in the NRL. Speaking of impressive, two very exciting fullbacks on show here in a wonderful battle between Kevin Locke and Josh Dugan. The future looks bright.

My tip: New Zealand 30-18

Newcastle v Gold Coast

As Titans’ coach John Cartwright prepares for season 2012, the make-up of his team changes every week but the results remain the same. This week, it’s time for young Jordan Rankin to have a crack at the fullback position where a host of others have tried this season. Rankin is a much heralded star from the Titans NYC nursery and should go well.

The Knights sit 8th on the ladder and are desperate to stay in contention for the finals. No better opportunity presents itself than this match at home against the cellar dwellers of the competition on Sunday afternoon. With so much more to play for, not many will be game to back against Newcastle, even with question marks over the fitness of Jarrod Mullen. Should also be interesting to see Beau Henry against his former teammates.

My tip: Newcastle 24-22

St George Illawarra v South Sydney

Pre merger days, this fixture had more meaning and more history behind it than any other. I was weaned on its legend. The 1965 decider when 78,000 turned out at the SCG; The Semi Final in ’68; The Grand Final in ‘71. Folkes used to talk about it at the dinner table with a sparkle in the eye and sideburns in their hearts. Post merger, the bad blood still exists but in Souths’ case; oh how the mighty have fallen.

Their forward pack ravaged by injury, their coach out of ideas, their half and five eighth playing random good footy when the mood strikes and their souls with nothing left to give: The South Sydney Rabbitohs head down the Princes Highway to Wollongong to take their medicine and go home. In possibly the only highlight for Souths’ fans, Greg Inglis gives it to Mark Gasnier one last time.

My tip: St George Illawarra 32-12

Parramatta v Melbourne

A recent rivalry with plenty of feeling sees its next chapter written this Monday night when the competition leaders travel to Parramatta stadium. Eels fans simply do not like the Storm and feel as though they were robbed of a premiership in 2009. Even if they have gotten over it, we find out this week that Melbourne are apparently the ‘dirtiest’ team in the comp and this could reignite the fire.

Fingers crossed it does and sets the scene for more fireworks, more head butting, less wrestling and frequent meetings between Billy Slater and Jarryd Hayne. They have plenty to talk about I’m sure but at the end of the day, the Storm defence will do all the talking as the home side simply can’t find a way through. Smith and Cronk the standouts in a close one.

My tip: Melbourne 18-12

Paully's Picks - Round 20

Canterbury v Parramatta

One week too late. There is no greater rivalry over the past 15 years and there was no bigger club football match in NRL history than the semi final played between these teams in 2009. Going back further for you historians out there, hard to argue against the fact that Canterbury and Parramatta hated each other more than anyone in the 80’s except for maybe the US and Soviet Union.

Speaking of cold wars, the last meeting between these famous Sydney clubs was in round 6 this year and what a ferocious battle it was. Hindmarsh v Ennis, Payne v Hayne and another great chapter written in the Eels v Bulldogs rivalry. This Friday, when they meet again at Homebush, we might not see as much good football played with these teams sitting 12th and 13th on the ladder, but you will get plenty of effort and this is where Parramatta have been faultless in recent weeks.

My tip: Parramatta 24-12

Melbourne v Brisbane

1st versus 4th on the ladder and compared to the other Friday Night Football game to kick off round 20..... well, there is no comparison. The Storm have rebuilt from last year using discipline and defence whilst the Broncos continue to build for the future using a perfect balance of youth and experience. Soon-to-be superstars like Josh Hoffman, Alex Glenn and Jack Reed are learning from the best each week and coming into their own.

On paper, the hosts for this blockbuster at AAMI Park don’t seem to have the same athletic ability as their opponents but they don’t need to. Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk have the highest Rugby League IQs in the NRL and this will prove the difference on the night. Home ground advantage and their resolute defence keep the Storm driving towards the finals in a cracker and easily the Match of the Round.

My tip: Melbourne 14-12

Gold Coast v North Queensland

A few weeks ago we tipped the smallest crowd in Rugby League history to turn out for a Roosters v Raiders Monday night game. If this Saturday’s match between the Titans and the Cowboys will prove anything, it will be that records are meant to be broken. The over/under betting for attendance to this one must start at about 3000 people but the poor folk from the Gold Coast won’t know what they are missing.

Beau Henry gets his first start for the Titans and in an ominous sign for his future and for the new culture of footballers; this is his 3rd club in two years. William Zillman has been named to play centre for the home side in another effort by John Cartwright to turn the club around from a disastrous season. Finally, Tariq Sims starts for the Cowboys and that is enough for many to tune in and probably enough to get the Cowboys home.

My tip: North Queensland 24-18

Cronulla v Newcastle

Plenty of league commentators have predicted that only 4 teams can win the competition this year. If this is fact, nobody came to that realisation quicker the Knights and the Sharks last week. Both teams were crushed by competition heavyweights in rivalry round after putting in good performances in the weeks before. A harsh lesson for two clubs on the cusp of the top 8 and further proof that perhaps our post season structure needs an upgrade.

Before we do that though, it is still a sign of success if you can make the semi finals and winning this match at Toyota Park on Saturday night will help one of these teams do exactly that. It could be a cold, wet and windy welcome for the Newcastle boys and the toughness of the Sharks forward pack will make the task even harder for Kurt Gidley and his crew. Cronulla bounce back from last week to keep their season alive.

My tip: Cronulla 24-14

Wests v Easts

Rugby League fans are generally a forgiving and loyal bunch. We can get over players leaving our clubs and the NRL treating us like fools, we can deal with all the off-field drama and salary cap issues... but when it comes to Leichardt Oval and the Tigers on a Saturday night, this forgiveness is thrown out the window. The place will be baying for blood with the memory of last year’s semi finals still keeping them up nights.

On that occasion it was the Roosters who stole a win from the Tigers in extraordinary circumstances and the Leichardt faithful will not have forgotten. They will turn out in numbers and Benji Marshall and co will thrive on this atmosphere and deliver for the masses. On paper, this is essentially the home side’s best 13 and they play like it to blow the visitors off the park early and cruise home to start their finals run.

My tip: Wests 40-14

South Sydney v NZ Warriors

A credit to coach John Lang and South Sydney for still finding a way to compete after injury had annihilated their forward pack. They’ve played with purpose recently but, as expected from the bunnies, played with utter confusion at times as well. What they are not confused about anymore, it seems, is how to play with Greg Inglis. “Get him the ball and get out of the way” seems to be the game plan.

The Warriors, on the other hand, have been under no illusions about how their football team should attack. Just do whatever James Maloney tells you to do. Maloney has been a star for two seasons now and this Central Coast product is the perfect link between a hard working forward pack and a very aggressive backline. His leadership in the final quarter of this match will be the difference in a close one.

My tip: New Zealand 20-18

Penrith v Manly

The Panthers are yet to lose at home since Steve Georgallis took over as head coach; in fact they have not lost at Centrebet Stadium since round 6 this year. A Sunday afternoon kick off out west has the boys from Manly very cautious this week and rightly so. If Luke Lewis is fit and ready for this match, it will be closer than the bookies are predicting and closer than competition ladder suggests.

The Sea Eagles have lost only one from their past 8 matches on the back of superb play from their spine and a pack of forwards that never lets you breath. They win the wrestle in defence and find your weakness in attack. You can bet they will be running at old teammate Travis Burns this weekend, as well as Luke Walsh in attempt to stifle the Panthers’ offence. It works, but only just. Jennings v Jamie Lyon an absolute highlight.

My tip: Manly 24-22

Canberra v St George Illawarra

Can the mighty St George Illawarra Dragons actually be jinxed? Are they really incapable of beating the boys from our nation’s capital, no matter what advantage they have? It can’t be that far a road trip from Wollongong to Bruce, can it? Can my questions get any more annoying... can they?!?! Monday night Football heads south to the ACT this week as the Dragons try to beat Canberra for the first time since round 17, 2007.

If the Raiders are any chance of another upset in this bizarre rivalry, they will have to score early and get themselves a decent head start before the visitors acclimatise to the conditions. Once they do, the near negative temperatures will not be a hindrance and Saints will finish stronger. If the home side fail to get on top early, there is a real danger that they will go 160 minutes without scoring a point. Stranger things have happened.

My tip: St George Illawarra 25-0

Where this is no smoke, there is no fire.

The Rugby League media exposure regarding the Wests Tigers' signing of Adam Blair has been akin to reading a tabloid magazine. Not surprising given the fact that these days, most tabloid magazines present themselves as Newspapers... however, that’s a story for another day.

Can we lay off the Tigers please...???

All we are hearing through the league media is about the apparent resentment coming from Benji Marshall and other Wests players towards Tim Sheens. Why? Because Sheens has had to release a few players to make room under the Salary Cap for Adam Blair. Basically, the Storm second rower is coming so the club has cleared the decks for him and the playing group is filthy because of this. Really?

When did the Wests Tigers 1st grade squad become a sewing circle? Why is the media trying to create a soap opera where these players are behaving like private school girls? Where they start refusing to speak to the coach and management? Perhaps journalists think every working environment is as horrible and back stabbing as their own? Unlike corporate Australia - I am guessing footballers don't bitch and complain like a bunch of office receptionists. I bet they don't discuss what the others are wearing to training.

What they do is very different to this, what they do is take up the battle for themselves, as was the case for Andrew Fifita as reported in this article. The Tigers front rower, heading to Cronulla in 2012, was happy to share with a journalist that he went looking for Blair to exact some personal revenge during the Tigers' round 15 match against Melbourne. Says he sledged Blair a few times, letting him know that he didn’t appreciate the Melbourne forward taking his piece of the Salary Cap and forcing Fifita to move to the Shire.

Fantastic. This is a great angle and one worth pursuing. On-field battles are always more exciting than off-field dramas and much easier to prove. Which brings us to the the major problem. The Sydney media have no proof of any internal squabbling at Wests but this has not stopped them from reporting as much. Remember the rumour going around earlier in the season about one Tigers player sleeping with another's wife? Ridiculous.
We understand that many league journos have personal vendettas against a certain club or a certain coach and they use and abuse their positions to 'resolve' these differences, but it’s starting to get boring. Read any Danny Weidler 'articles' lately? He thrives on gossip. Read any News Limited press? The battles they have waged on the likes of Brian Smith, Wayne Bennett and more recently on the very fabric of human decency!!!...... well, you get the idea. Personal vendetta rather than honest reporting of the news. Sensationlism and soap opera rather than searching for the truth.

Get over your obsessions with tabloid journalism and please start reporting about football or if not, perhaps the truth is a good place to start - not the latest episode of some drama you have created in your very weak minds.

How did the Tigers respond to all of this? They flew up to Townsville and put 40 on the Cowboys. Why can’t you write about that? This recent attack on Tim Sheens and his club from the media has resulted in two things happening...a) one of the great NRL coaches being harassed at a press conference with questions that deserved no response and b)... Benji Marshall being forced to explain that "yes... me and sheensy fight sometimes", what a scoop this was for one Sydney metro paper... seriously. Is this all we have to write about?

Enough with the gossip, drama, secret boardroom leaks and personal vendettas... please. Give these professional athletes a little more credit, or did Lote Tuqiri and Robert Lui actually start whispering to each other about who Robbie Farah slept with last night... or why Chris Lawrence wore those pants with that top.... or did Liam Fulton actually sleep with Bryce Gibbs' wife and if so is she pregnant with his baby whilst her mother is being arrested for murder? Tune in next week.

Paully's Picks - Round 19 (Rivalry Round)

NZ Warriors v Canterbury

To kick off Rivalry Round, or as some might call it, Round 19, the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs travel to Auckland to take on a Warriors team who have not fared much better than their opponents in recent weeks. If form is any indicator, this rivalry won’t have much venom behind it when these clubs meet on Friday night but form is never important when a season is on the line.

That is exactly the case for the ‘dogs. Win and you keep the dream alive; lose your third in a row and your 10th of the year and its curtains. The likes of Frank Pritchard, Greg Eastwood and Dene Halatau will give everything they have against their countrymen, but once again the Bulldogs will lack a spark in the halves and toughness in defence. The exciting talents of Warriors pair Shaun Johnson and Kevin Locke are again on display to ensure NZ get the biscuits.

My tip: Warriors 18-12

Brisbane v Gold Coast

These teams have only played each other on 10 occasions but the proximity rule ensures it falls under a ‘rivalry’ banner. Truth be told, they have already played some memorable matches but this could be something to forget for the Titans and their fans. In fact, if the Broncos are awake and ready for this one, it could get ugly and it could be embarrassing.

The Gold Coast sit on the bottom of the ladder, with the worst defensive record in the NRL and many have blamed their struggles in 2011 on the age factor. If this is true and the visitors are simply too old to compete, trying to contain the Broncos’ next generation stars will be impossible. This will be highlighted in the forwards with Alex Glenn, Matt Gillett and Ben Hannant ready to run rings around their ‘older’ opposition. Titans are in it early but simply can’t keep up.

My tip: Brisbane 30-10

South Sydney v Eastern Suburbs

To continue a genuine and historic rivalry dating back to May of 1908, South Sydney host the Roosters at Homebush on Saturday evening and whilst their respective seasons appear to be over, these clubs will definitely not play like it when the whistle blows for kick off. The Bunnies seem to be outgunned on paper, with a horrific injury toll and a slightly less horrific defensive record, but somehow still showed signs of life against Manly last week.

The Roosters meanwhile, had plenty of life in them last week and that resurgent performance against the Panthers has some tipping that Todd Carney has come out of his funk, that the Roosters can still go on a run and make the semis and that they will win their first away game of the season this weekend. Balderdash. Souths still have their spine intact and desperation gets them home in a close one.

My tip: South Sydney 24-20

North Queensland v Wests Tigers

So, we assume that this is a rivalry based on the 2005 decider? Fine with me. A total of 8 players from this match actually played in that Grand Final but considering the brutal nature of our sport, who even knows if they remember it. J Thurston’s injury aside, the Cowboys look fantastic on paper in this one. They’ve had an unbelievable season so far and even pulled off a miraculous upset last Monday night just to show they are not a one man team.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are showing too few signs of promise and are hitting a bad patch at the wrong end of the season. Their attack should be too much for the Cowboys, who will struggle for points, but should is not good enough. The Cowboys play with plenty of pride and enthusiasm led by the return of Tariq Sims and Brent Tate. Speaking of Tate, he and Willie Tonga up against Chris Lawrence and Blake Ayshord will be a highlight.

My tip: North Queensland 22-18

Penrith v Parramatta

The ‘battle of the west’ is not about League v the AFL, nor is it about cowboy hats and six shooters. It is, and always should be about the Panthers and the Eels. They face each other for the 83rd time on Saturday in a cold and wet night at the foot of the mountains. This shapes up to be a beauty. The Panthers have been playing some inspired football of late and will welcome a return to their home ground for this match.

The Eels, well, seem a little confused at the moment about who should lead their attack. They have a halfback who is leaving at season’s end and is not known for his flair with ball in hand, they have a journeymen five-eighth who is in good form but is not the answer; and then they have Jarryd Hayne. Named at fullback this week, Hayne will be the beginning and end of the Eels chances as he either gets involved in their attack, or waits for Robson and McGuire to guide him. Chances are it’s the former.

My tip: Parramatta 16-14

Canberra v Melbourne

A rivalry? Perhaps but more likely these teams have come together as leftovers. Everyone else in the NRL has picked a partner for the big dance that is ‘rivalry round’, except for the Storm and the Raiders. They face each other in our nation’s capital on Sunday afternoon in what should be a low scoring affair, just how Melbourne like it.

Josh Dugan has been named to return in this match which should heighten expectations, as will the form of Raiders prop Brett White who faces his old team-mates to inspire a very physical battle up front. Young halves Sam Williams and Josh McCrone struggle to impose their will in attack against the brick wall that is Melbourne’s defence. The Storm run away late to win and exact revenge for a round 10 loss to the Green Machine.

My tip: Melbourne 23-10

Newcastle v Manly

Plenty of history here. Namely, the 1997 Grand Final is one of those games where you remember where you were when it all happened; when you saw Darren Albert score the match winner that incited a month long celebration in the Hunter. You remember the first 10 minutes of this decider and how it resembled an Ice Hockey brawl, rather than a game of footy. Manly and Newcastle fans certainly remember and this is a rivalry in fine form.

Speaking of fine form, the Manly Sea Eagles sit second on the ladder and head up the F3 in search of their 13th win of the season on the back of a dominant pack of forwards and super talented halves. Great matchups across the park here; highlighted by Foran facing Knights super rookie Ryan Stig, Jamie Lyon up against Junior Sa’u and two very aggressive lock forwards in Joel Edwards and Glenn Stewart. A beauty.

My tip: Manly 26-16

St George Illawarra v Cronulla

Tempted to root for the underdog here. The poor sharks, they play with so much spirit but have to watch as their hated rival of almost 50 years gets all the spoils, all the glory, all the TV games and all the best players from north of Sylvania and South of the ‘Nasho’. Although despite this disadvantage, Cronulla have been more entertaining and in better form than the reigning premiers lately but that’s all about to change.

Saints hobbled through the rep calender, coming out of this 6 week horror stretch with3 losses and a draw. On Monday night at Kogarah’s Jubilee Oval, the home side start their season all over again missing only Ben Hornby from a star studded line up. Cronulla will give them everything they can handle up front in what will be a ferocious opening 15 minutes, but home ground advantage and the Dragons defence gets them home.

My tip: St George Illawarra 20-12

Paully's Picks - Round 18

NZ Warriors v Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Titans are about to join a long list of NRL clubs with a trophy in their cabinet that they’d rather not have. But don’t feel bad Titans fans. We’ve all been there. You start the season with high hopes after making the semi finals the year before and winning a big home semi... but then it all comes crashing down. A wooden spoon beckons.

Before John Cartwright’s team begin planning their Mad Monday celebrations, they first get to travel across the Tasman to face New Zealand at Mt Smart Stadium on Friday night. Admittedly the Warriors have lost more than they’ve won this year; but at home on a cold and wet night in Auckland, they produce using the speed and skill of Shaun Johnson and Kevin Locke.
My tip: NZ Warriors 20-12

Parramatta v Wests Tigers

The more and more times you watch the 2011 Eels play, the more you like their chances to turn it around. Unfortunately for Parramatta, the more and more they play, the bigger and deeper the hole they dig for themselves. Having lost their past 3 and not tasting victory since a round 11 win over the Sharks, the Eels can only hope for a bit of luck to fall their way against the Tigers on Friday night at Parramatta Stadium.

At this stage, it looks like being the opposite with Chris Lawrence and Todd Payten named to return for the visitors. What’s more unlucky for the Eels is that Tigers coach Tim Sheens looks like he will spring the return of Benji Marshall on them. Either way, the Tigers have lost the ability to entertain and the Eels average just over 15 points per game in attack. How the mighty have fallen. Tigers at the death with Robbie Farah leading the way.
My tip: Wests Tigers 20-18

Cronulla v Canberra
Much has been made of the last meeting between these two clubs. Twas’ round 1 of the season and the Raiders looked like world beaters at home in a drubbing. Interestingly, after this game the Sharks went on to beat St George Illawarra in round 2 and the Raiders went on to lose their next 8 games. Both clubs have been a work in progress this season and have come full circle for this match on Saturday at Toyota Stadium.

The Cronulla forward pack have become a sight to behold whilst the Raiders have found stability in the halves with Sam Williams and Josh McCrone combining well to win 4 of their last 6. This will be a beauty and far too good a match to be stuck in the 5.30pm timeslot. Hard to go past the Sharks at home in a contest highlighted by a vicious forwards battle and a return to the shire of Blake Ferguson. Could be fun.
My tip: Cronulla 24-12

Canterbury Bankstown v Melbourne
What to make of the Bulldogs this year? Anyone’s guess what has gone wrong at Belmore but depending on which newspaper you read.... the coach has one more chance, the board is split and the fans are calling for heads to roll. The truth is probably nowhere near any of this. They have the same record as the Tigers, Warriors and Panthers but will always get more press and more pressure. They have not handled it well recently.
If there was ever a week to turn around your fortunes in the NRL, this is not it for the ‘Dogs. The Melbourne Storm sit top of the table and have won their last five matches without allowing more than 8 points in defence. Remarkable. How fitting that this match is played at the historic Adelaide Oval because if Canterbury cannot get their house in order before 7pm on Saturday night – it could be a cricket score.
My tip: Melbourne 22-10.

Eastern Suburbs v Penrith
Watching the Roosters capitulate to the visiting Raiders last Monday night was truly a sad sight. Last year’s grand finalists still boast some of the games big names and one its most experienced coaches but as they succumbed to their 11TH loss of the season, losing the second half 20-0, you knew all hope had been lost. To Todd Carney especially, it seems like rugby league has become a chore and this is the saddest sight of all.
But fear not, Roosters fans; here is a chance to turn out in your hundreds to cheer on the tri-colours against the Panthers on Sunday afternoon. By massive contrast, Penrith are heading up the ladder as they play with no pressure and no expectations. The season seems like more of a farewell tour for this group and on the field, they are having fun. They beat the stuffing out of the Dogs and the Cowboys at home in the last fortnight and will do the same on the road against the Roosters.
My tip: Penrith 30-16

Manly v South Sydney
One of the great rivalries in Rugby League.  While many things change, some things stay the same as Manly host South Sydney at Brookvale Oval on Sunday afternoon. This is the 127th meeting between the clubs and just like the 126 before it; there will be blood here again. Judging by betting prices through the week, it seems that most of the wounds will be inflicted by Manly’s uncompromising and talented forward pack.
Led by elder statesmen Jason King, this pack will beat the stuffing out of the Rabbitohs ‘b’ team up front and make all the space in the world for the dynamic duo in Foran and Cherry-Evans. Whilst Souths might be able to bounce back from last week’s loss and deliver a much improved performance, it won’t be enough as they simply do not have the firepower. Manly by plenty.
My tip: Manly 34-16

Newcastle v North Queensland
To finish off round 18 and the official ending of the rep season, Jonathan Thurston proves that a) luck with injury plays a part in every club’s success and b) the salary cap does not allow for clubs to have more than one superstar. Hence, the Cowboys are immediately huge underdogs in this match after JT’s season ending injury on Wednesday night. This also ensures the Knights have the advantage and form suggests the same.
Newcastle have won their past 3 matches and adopted the ‘grind’ with enthusiasm as their defence over the past month has been a highlight. North Queensland had the best attack in the NRL before their entire season was turned on its head but will adopt a similar approach to their football with defence, rather than attack, being a new focal point. The return of Jarrod Mullen and the rise of Joel Edwards should be enough for the Knights to keep the run going.
My tip: Newcastle 18-14

2011 State of Origin Match Preview - Game III

Queensland v New South Wales
State of Origin III

The definition of the word ‘anticipation’ has been re-written in the lead up to this match and this is something only Origin can do, only Rugby League can do. Indeed the AFL has its Grand Final Day at the MCG, Rugby has its Bledisloe Cup and so on and so forth amongst the rival codes, but nothing matches ‘The Greatest Game of All’ when you talk of a State of Origin decider. Especially this one.

Queensland comes into this game with that familiar air of confidence now fading but enough experience to know how to bounce back. Whether they are motivated or pressured more by the fact that this is Darren Lockyer’s farewell will be irrelevant at kick-off because Lockyer himself will either not allow it, or adjust for it on the field. Either way, he is still the best there is and he is still surrounded by Civoniceva, Scott, Slater and Smith. Enough to drive fear into the broken hearts of all New South Wales fans.

Speaking of NSW fans, this series, for them, must be like watching Rocky IV. Queensland being Ivan Drago in this metaphor of course. In game 2, NSW ‘cut’ the Russian – proved he was a man, not a machine. Proved to the fans that it was OK to believe we can beat them. Now, on Wednesday night at 8.05pm in the heart of Maroon territory, we have the last round of this heavyweight match and both tribes in a frenzy, breathless with anticipation.

Come game time - nerves will consume the inexperienced in this type of pressure filled atmosphere so expect to see some signs of it early on but once the game settles down, it will be an instant classic. Desperation in defence will be the highlight. NSW coach Ricky Stuart has built his team and his philosophy on this mantra. Queensland as usual will be the proverbial brick wall. Who will break first? It does not matter. What’s more important is who will break last as this game goes right to the final minute with nothing separating these sides but a field goal.

My Man of the Match Tip: Jonathan Thurston

My tip: NSW 15-14 (difficult to type with my fingers crossed)

Paully's Picks - Round 17

Parramatta v Brisbane

A test of depth again here for the Broncos, which historically they have passed with flying colours. In fact, disregarding the win-loss column for Brisbane during the rep season, what’s more important is the amount of talent that has been given an opportunity during this annual mid-season shambles. A credit to their development system and a slap in the face of Sydney based teams.

Speaking of Sydney teams, the Parramatta Eels host the ‘baby broncos’ this Friday night in what should be a very close one. The visitors bring with them a collection of Gen Y footballers wrapped around Peter Wallace whilst the Eels have a good balance of youth and savvy veterans In Nathan Hindmarsh and Luke Burt. This is why the Eels sneak home at the death.

My tip: Parramatta 20-18

Penrith v Canterbury

Welcome back Franky Pritchard. Whilst the Panthers faithful won’t stoop to throwing projectiles onto the field in anger of Pritchard leaving their club, Frank will not be hearing the warmest ovation of his life either. For that matter, neither will the Bulldogs in what shapes up a beauty at Centrebet Stadium in Saturday night’s only game for this shortened round.

Somehow, with their collective futures in limbo and a new coach due in 2012, the Panthers have found some form. Playing at home has always been their best medicine and this match will be no different. They blow the Bulldogs off the park early with sheer enthusiasm and hold on to win. Two great fullbacks on display here in Barba and Coote but fingers crossed for a physical battle between the Panthers forwards and Pritchard.

My tip: Penrith 24-18

Cronulla v South Sydney

Tough to predict that either of these teams will figure in the finals for season 2011, but at Toyota Stadium on Sunday afternoon they will beat the stuffing out of each other nonetheless. The Cronulla forward pack tore strips off the Titans last week and flat out embarrassed the Bulldogs pack the week before with Paul Gallen a standout in both wins.

Without Gallen though, the Sharks find themselves underdogs at home against a Souths team who just played their best game of the season - but this smells like an upset of the week. Led by Jeremy Smith and Nathan Gardner, the Sharks run over South Sydney and never look back in a brutal encounter. Ben Ross continues his good run of form but runs into two young bulls in Snowden and Douglas. Brutal.

My tip: Cronulla 18-16

St George Illawarra v Newcastle

A dress rehearsal of sorts for the visiting Newcastle Knights as they head to Wollongong on Sunday afternoon to play the Dragons at WIN Stadium. Current Saints coach Wayne Bennett will no doubt be able to ignore the fact that he will be coaching the opposition in a matter of months, but the Knights will not. Especially their two young halves in Ryan Stig and Tyrone Roberts.

Having already seen Bennett pull the strings to remove Beau Henry from the 2012 equation, Stig and Roberts will feel the pressure and not be able to repeat their match winning performance from last week against Mitchell Pearce and Todd Carney. Instead they struggle to match wits with two cagey veterans in Ben Hornby and Nathan Fein. The Dragons win at home in a tight one as the understudies get a chance to perform again.

My tip: St George Illawarra 14-8

Eastern Suburbs v Canberra

This match might have the smallest crowd ever seen at a game of Rugby League since fans travelled by horse and cart. Not sure if my historical hyperbole is accurate but you get the point. Roosters fans are notoriously prone to ‘forget’ games like this and on Monday Night, the Sydney Football Stadium will be a very quiet place. You will however, be able to hear the Green Machine faithful who take a ‘sicky’ from their Public Service jobs and travel up the Barton.

All 30 of them will be treated to a great night. They will enjoy yelling obscenities at Todd Carney (for his entire career no doubt), they will enjoy watching their monstrous forward pack run right through the Roosters, they will enjoy sweet victory as their team song echoes around a cavernous stadium and finally, when all is said and done, they will enjoy their trip home with no traffic to speak of on Anzac Parade. For once.

My tip: Canberra 30-22

Paully's Picks - Round 16

Wests v Canterbury Bankstown

Are the Bulldogs due to turn things around, or are they about to fade out of season 2011 with a whimper, rather than the famous ‘dogs of war’ approach? If it is to be the latter, no better opportunity may come around than this Friday night’s match against the wounded Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium.

With Benji Marshall out, the Tigers’ famous flamboyant attack not seen in months, the Bulldogs’ fans turning against their team and the Belmore club’s season and reputation on the line..... they do turn it around. Led by returning dogs Hodkinson, Ennis and Jamal Idris, the visitors hit the ground running and hold on in a thriller out west. Ben Barba turns it on after the Canterbury forwards finally wake up.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 26-20

South Sydney v Brisbane

A mismatch on paper, on form and on the punt. Coincidentally this is also a marketing mismatch. Apparently the NRL believes Sydney’s ‘west’ stretches out a very long distance and have scheduled this match in Perth, WA. Not exactly a territory we need to be fighting for but whatever... let’s play along. Our very good friends west of the Nullarbor will be treated to a beauty.

Fingers crossed they know what a gift it is to watch Darren Lockyer at the peak of his powers. The Broncos forwards outgun the Rabbitohs pack whilst Wallace and Lockyer out play Sandow and Sutton. The fun continues out wide for the ‘visitors’ as the youth and speed of the Broncos backline runs rings around their opposition... except for one monumental showdown between Greg Inglis and Justin Hodges. Enjoy.

My tip: Brisbane 28-12

Gold Coast v Cronulla

What to make of the Titans....? In the idiots guide to building a 1st grade footy team, this club has followed the process step by step. Build the business first with a CEO, investors and a head coach... then start with a forward pack. Bailey, Bird, Harrison, Laffranchi.... they look good enough don’t they? Then get a star halfback to lead your team around the park and a few speedsters outside him. Check, Check and Check.

Bad cheque. With a combination of bad luck and bad defence, they are languishing and the future does not look bright. The rest of the competition is producing players from their respective under 20s teams at an impressive rate. Not so the Titans. Their opponents for your 5.30pm match on Saturday are the Cronulla Sharks who are not much different when you look at the ladder but momentum is everything in this match. The Sharks have it; they win at Robina for the first time ever.

My tip: Cronulla 18-12

Canberra v Parramatta

A 5 day turnaround between matches for the Parramatta Eels as opposed to their hosts who have been resting for 13 days; Situation awful. A Saturday night game in our nation’s capital with forecast temperatures of ‘friggin freezing’; Situation getting worse. The bookies having the visitors at 8.5 point underdogs; situation horrible. Are the Eels any chance here?

No. The Raiders have been terrible at times this season but there seems to be too much on their side this weekend to go against them at home. Whilst the Parramatta spirit is showing signs of life, it won’t be enough to get them over the hump. The Canberra forwards get a roll on early and when Jarryd Hayne finally gets feeling in his legs, it will be too late. Jacob Loko v Blake Ferguson a highlight of two young stars.

My tip: Canberra 30-24

NZ Warriors v Melbourne

This will be a beauty. For those of you planning a six hour feast of Rugby League on Sunday afternoon, there is no better way to kick off than tuning in to this midday match from Mt Smart. The Storm sit atop the ladder and still look like they are just warming up, especially with their attack as new combinations are slowly forming through the season. Their defence, however, looks more than just warmed up.

The Storm have held opponents to an average of just above 5 points per match during their past four matches; all wins. Phenomenal. The home town Warriors will need to be just as stingy if they are a chance to turn their season around, again, after losing their past 3. Brett Seymour has been named to return for the hosts which should help their attack but it simply won’t be enough. Cameron Smith leads the way again as Melbourne hold off a fast finishing Warriors side.

My tip: Melbourne 18-16

Penrith v North Queensland

Sunday afternoon at the foot of the mountains. What better way to enjoy the Steve Georgallis era beginning at Penrith and just on that topic, a tip of the hat to Matt Elliott as another coach falls victim to the harsh mistress that is Rugby League. How will the Panthers respond? For starters, their first 20 minutes will be electrifying but if they don’t crack the Cowboys early, they could be in trouble.

This North Queensland team is a site to behold. Aside from injured centres Brent Tate and Willie Tonga, the visitors are strong in every position and are guided brilliantly by the Thurston/Payne combination and a highly gifted and tenacious pack of forwards. Luke Lewis returns from injury for the home side, which is usually a sign they will play well, but against the Cowboys they will need more, and won’t find it. Cowboys win a ripper.

My tip: North Queensland 30-20

Newcastle v Eastern Suburbs

As opposed to the two earlier games on Sunday afternoon, this one doesn’t quite have the same excitement around it. Might have something to do with the fact that when these teams last met in round 11 this season, the Roosters won in a stinker. A tight match that went down to the wire, but a stinker nonetheless.

Will they clear the air up in Newcastle? You bet. The atmosphere at the Knights home ground is always electric for Sunday matches and the Roosters will be keen to perform better than their 4 and 9 record suggests. Unfortunately for the boys from Bondi, they won’t. Their attack is the worst in the NRL and the Knights take full advantage using speed and strength in the form of Akuila Uate and rookie Ryan Stig.

My tip: Newcastle 19-12

St George Illawarra v Manly

Wollongong welcomes the Dragons for the first time in season 2011 for Monday Night Football in your final match of the Women in League Round. The reigning premiers are showing signs of wear and tear lately and are toiling away painfully through the rep season. Manly, on the other hand, are in white hot form and have won their past 6 including wins against the depleted Cowboys and Broncos.

This is the tipping point, literally. Whilst the Eagles again face a top 4 team at less than full strength, they are underdogs at WIN stadium this week. St George Illawarra have an intimidating record at their spiritual home ground and this should be enough to get them 2 points in an absolute bruiser. The Manly forwards will attempt to run right through the middle but will find a resolute defence and this will be no place for the faint hearted.

My tip: St George Illawarra 13-12
