Paully's Picks - Round 26

Newcastle v South Sydney

How time flies. Round 26 kicks off with a do or die match as Souths head up the F3 to take on the Knights at Ausgrid Stadium. The Bunnies are playing a good brand of football lately but the pressure of this match will be huge. Win and you're in, lose and it's off to Russell Crowe's farm for Mad Monday. Looks like the latter.

Knights fans will be fuelled up and fired up for Friday night in their annual 'old boys' game and they will reach fever pitch as Adam MacDougall plays his last home game. Hard to see the bunnies overcoming the early onslaught and even though Bulldogs fans will be praying for a draw, it will be the home side whose prayers are answered. Kurt Gidley the stand out.

My tip: Newcastle 30-20

St George Illawarra v Penrith

The Penrith Panthers come to the end of a forgettable season which started with a 40 point drubbing in round 1 and could very well finish the same way. It’s been a tough one for the Mountain Men and they head to Wollongong with not much to play for but pride. The Dragons, however, are still desperate to find a touch of last year’s September form and this is a prime opportunity.

Saints will stroll through the visitors 'b grade' front row and throttle them right up the middle. The Dragons backline should have a field day after this platform has been set as WIN Stadium bids farewell to Mark Gasnier. Must make mention of Luke Lewis here, he has every reason to rest his broken body but doesn’t need any reason to play. A credit to his love of the game and his bravery.

My tip: St George Illawarra 28-8

New Zealand v North Queensland

With the chance of hosting a semi final all but gone, these two clubs come together at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night looking to find some rhythm. The Cowboys hobbled over the line against Cronulla last week and the Warriors were unlucky to lose to St George Illawarra; they'll both be keen to warm up well for next week.

The home side not only warm up, but they heat up at home to farewell the Warriors faithful in their final game in Auckland. Quality football on display from two quality teams as they give us a taste of what’s to come. Great matchups all over the park as the Locke/Johnson combination shows the Bowen/Thurston combination that youth can beat experience.

My tip: New Zealand 18-14

Cronulla v Wests

Saturday night at 'Shark Park' - for one more time in 2011. Fans in the Shire have had another season to forget but they will be treated to a spirited display as the home side does their best to finish the season on a high. In fact they will play with no pressure at all and this could be dangerous for the visiting Tigers. The Sharks will not lay down.

Prepare yourself for plenty of fun between noted nigglers and future Sharks, Bryce Gibbs and Liam Fulton as they face Paul Gallen and Jeremy Smith. But once all is said and done and the forwards get out of the way, Benji Marshall grabs this game by the barrels and rips the home side apart. His combination with Robbie Farah is still the most entertaining football to watch in the NRL.

My tip: Wests 28-14

Gold Coast v Parramatta

Preston Campbell's legacy to Rugby League is obvious. He is a beacon of light and hope for the indigenous community as well as the many young footballers who don't weigh 100kgs at age 13. As a footballer, you will struggle to find anyone with faster feet and better instincts - Presto was a pleasure to watch.

Speaking of which, fingers crossed the people of the Gold Coast realise this and come to watch their captain one last time. The Parramatta Eels may not draw the biggest crowd of the season, but this match will be played with plenty of spirit nonetheless. Edge goes to the home side as they claw their way in front in the closing stages of a good match to end a horrible season.

My tip: Gold Coast 20-18

Canterbury Bankstown v Canberra

If by miracle, the Knights and the Bunnies draw their match on Friday night (stay with me here people), this match will turn into a Father's Day frenzy at Homebush with 40,000 streaming through the gates. If not, the Andrew Ryan farewell match will be a memorable one. He is one of toughest in the land.

The man they call 'Bobcat' will be remembered by the Belmore faithful as the man who saved the 2004 premiership from slipping through their fingers. As a second rower, he is up there with Kennedy, Fitzgibbon and Hindmarsh and a tip of the hat to him. Dugan v Barba a highlight as disappointing seasons come to an end for both clubs but the 'Dogs rip it up late.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 40-18

Brisbane v Manly

While the press in Sydney have basically camped out at Brookvale during the week, the Brisbane Broncos have been preparing an official farewell for their captain and favourite son, Darren Lockyer, in relative peace and quiet across the border. They have secured 3rd place on the ladder and are building towards something special.

The middle leg of your Sunday triple header will be a beauty but very difficult to tip the Eagles without Kieran Foran. The visitors have plenty of depth and plenty of speed in their backline to match up well with their hosts, but without Foran they will miss some direction. Manly won't be able to spoil the party as Lockyer shines again.

My tip: Brisbane 24-12

Eastern Suburbs v Melbourne

This booze ban seems to be working. Makes you wonder how hard the Roosters were hitting the soup before they decided enough was enough. They have won 3 straight now and youngsters like Aidan Guerra and Jake Friend are reaping the rewards of this healthy approach to life. One game to go and they can get stuck in with a clear conscience.

NRL CEO David Gallop will be on hand for an awkward post match presentation of the J.J. Giltinan shield as Melbourne wrap up the minor premiership. An amazing effort considering what they have been through. However, that will be nothing compared to what Kings Cross will go through when the Roosters hit the strip for Mad Monday after a month off the drink.

My tip: Melbourne 26-6

Paully's Picks - Round 25

Manly v Melbourne
The penultimate round of the season proper begins at Brookvale Oval on Friday night and what better way to give footy fans an early taste of semi final action. The Eagles host the Melbourne Storm in a match between arguably the two most successful teams of the last half decade. In that time, Des Hasler has led the Eagles to two Grand Finals for one win – Bellamy’s record remains in a shroud of cap controversy but his talents can never be questioned.

And neither can the spirit of these two football teams. They will play with an intensity above and beyond the rest of the competition and fingers crossed for some early, heated exchanges. Home ground advantage and the absence of Storm play maker Cooper Cronk gives the edge to Manly but seeing the Storm at $2.20 mid week is mighty tempting. A colossal contest and the Eagles with just a touch too much.

My tip: Manly 18-12

Parramatta v Eastern Suburbs

Parramatta fans could not help but feel disappointed at their results this year, and with a wooden spoon in sight for the first time in eons, they would be feeling a little nervous as well. But here is a chance for the Eels faithful to reward a huge effort from an under-manned and out-gunned bunch of brave footballers – their last home game of the season.

The Roosters seem to have cast aside the dead weight that may have been too heavy for them to carry this year – and their results have improved as such. They bring good enough form to Parra Stadium on Friday night to continue the misery for first year coach Stephen Kearney. This coaching caper is a tough gig and Kearney and Brian Smith must be desperate for a break, and a win. Smith gets his wish.

My tip: Roosters 20-18

Canterbury Bankstown v Newcastle

The Bulldogs seem to be building momentum, they seem to be showing signs of improvement, their superstars seem to be finally playing to potential – but for what? Bulldogs fans seem to think their team can win by 50 in these last two weeks of the season and snag a finals berth. They never stop believing but ultimately, the Knights don’t need to stretch as far.

Newcastle currently sit in 8th position and have everything to play for. Jarrod Mullen, again, will be the key to any success and this time, he will deliver. Amongst a season of disappointment for the Belmore club, youngsters Josh Reynolds and Joel Romelo have been revelations. Romelo’s battle with Ryan Stig should be a beauty, as should the Morris v Mad Dog battle out wide. Knights tough it out.

My tip: Newcastle 24-20

Canberra v Penrith

The Raiders have broken a number of records this season. Not to kick them while they are down, but let’s just say those records will not make the honour roll at Canberra Leagues Club. However, they still have a chance to get something positive out of a horror season and give one of their favourite sons the farewell he deserves.

Alan Tongue plays his last home game on Saturday night in our nation’s capital and nobody has earned the right to finish with a win more than this man. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he has injured every joint in his body playing Rugby League for the Green Machine. Tongue starts at hooker as the Panthers come to spoil the party. They won’t.

My tip: Canberra 30-20

North Queensland v Cronulla

The Cowboys would be happy to head home after last weekend’s controversy against South Sydney and their fans will turn out in numbers for the Townsville club’s last home game of the regular season. A win here keeps them in the running for a home semi final and keeps them on the front foot heading into September.

The Cronulla Sharks, meanwhile, must be counting down the minutes to end season 2011. Albert Kelly has been named to make his return from injury in this match and a rude shock will await him. Jonathan Thurston runs rings around the Sharks backline and come late in the game, will be thinking about for and against. This one could be bad for the visitors.

My tip: North Queensland 40-16

St George Illawarra v New Zealand

Tipsters would be keen to stick with the Dragons, even after such a horror run of form but they might want to be wary here. More so than the Dragons looking completely exhausted – more so than Jamie Soward feeling the effects of a highly emotional representative season, more so than a number of Dragons not used to being in a slump... the in-form Warriors come to town and this is dangerous for the home side.

Dragons coach Wayne Bennett seems a little tired as well, but coaching two teams at once would be difficult for anybody. The Dragons stingy defence will hold the Warriors in check for only so long until the Locke/Johnson combination finds a hole or two – then its curtains. James Maloney has another blinder to match his halves partner and the visitors pull off an upset.

My tip: New Zealand 16-12

Brisbane v South Sydney

In the round 16 fixture between these clubs, South Sydney were too good under heavy rain and almost swamp like conditions. On Sunday afternoon at 3pm in Brisbane, a possible shower or two might swoop over Suncorp Stadium but it won’t be enough to slow down the home side this time. Darren Lockyer and his band of young Broncos have definitely put the foot down at the right end of the season.

The Bunnies have also hit the accelerator and are knocking on the door of the semi finals but this one might be too much to ask – even considering the form they are in. The Broncos pack shifts into gear early and Lockyer does the rest. Keep an eye on Isaac Luke in this match; he could fall in and out of consciousness before your very eyes, without any warning. An outstanding talent.

My tip: Brisbane 32-16

Wests v Gold Coast

The good folk of Sydney’s west have not seen the Tigers play at Campbelltown since a round 16 loss to the Bulldogs. Football returns to the flannelette capital on Monday night as the Gold Coast Titans travel a long way in the hopes of causing a huge upset to avoid the wooden spoon. Unfortunately for Titans fans, the hosts have everything going for them and this could be a cricket score.

Lote Tuqiri is named to return from injury, Benji Marshall is a free man, the Tigers play their last home game of the season proper and just to add to the flavour, they are still in the hunt for a top 4 finish and a home semi final. The Titans come out with pride as they always do but do not have much else in their bag. Robbie Farah the standout in a big win.

My tip: Wests 34-12

Paully's Picks - Round 24

Melbourne v St George Illawarra

A month or so ago, this was the most anticipated match of the season and one that league fans had circled in their calendars as must see. Not to say it won’t be an intense game of football, but for those of us who love to see spirited defence balanced with exciting attack, you may want to wait for the other Friday might match this week.

The Dragons are desperate to return to early season form, which means they will go back to a drawing board that reads, “grind, grind, grind”. This will not be pretty. The Storm will do much of the same... holding the opposition up in tackles that resemble a group hug, but there will be nothing cuddly about this one. Melbourne at home too good in a defensive arm wrestle.

My tip: Melbourne 16-8

South Sydney v North Queensland

With the Bunnies in this kind of form and carrying this much confidence, anything seems possible now. With the Cowboys in town and Jonathan Thurston clear of any cobwebs, anything IS possible in this match at Homebush on Friday night. Match of the Round for mine and perhaps the home side’s season on the line; who would have guessed??

North Queensland’s away record suggests they might not be prepared for this encounter against the resurgent Redfern club but rest assured, they will rip in. Matt Scott should lead the charge and will be ably supported by a couple of Sims brothers up front. Speaking of which, if Tariq runs into Dave Taylor, the old Olympic Stadium will be rocked to its very foundations. Awesome.

My tip: North Queensland 28-22

Gold Coast v Canberra

This is a danger game for the visiting Raiders. In fact anything could happen if this group of young footballers are let loose on Cavill Avenue with the smell of Mad Monday perhaps too strong to resist. Hence the danger. Fingers crossed Canberra coach David Furner has booked a flight home for the boys from our nation’s capital on Saturday night, rather than Sunday morning.

The Titans, on the other hand, have been dealing with a season of horror since May but are the more professional outfit and this will be made abundantly clear right from kick off. The Titans young backline feed off the energy of Preston Campbell and may even learn a few things from him as well: before it’s too late. Home side drag this one out and finish stronger.

My tip: Titans 26-8

Penrith v New Zealand

The coming of age of the Warriors spine has been a testament to coach Ivan Cleary’s patience, vision and teaching skills. On Saturday night at the foot of the mountains, he gets a small insight into what similar challenges he will face when coaching the opposition in a few months time. But before any of that happens, James Maloney and the rest of this dangerous quartet will teach the Panthers a lesson.

The Warriors defence has been the catalyst for some magnificent attacking displays by their army of speedsters. Shaun Johnson and Kevin Locke will again find the space they need to burn up Centrebet Stadium and the visitors win again. Interesting to watch step 1 of the Michael Jennings experiment at fullback whilst the battle of front rowers in this match will be a beauty.

My tip: New Zealand 24-12

Eastern Suburbs v Cronulla

More talent on the park in this match than their results suggest. Disappointing seasons for both clubs, especially the Roosters as they continue to try and salvage some pride after some forgettable moments on and off the field. The Sharks continue to struggle for points and will do so again at the SFS on Saturday night. Good news is that not too many people will see it.

If the Roosters and the Sharks play a game of football in front of 3000 fans and another 200 on pay TV.... did it really happen? You bet it did. The home side play chock full of confidence after last week’s big win in Wollongong and finish the season strong and sober. Keep an eye on Paul Gallen teaching a very young Roosters back row a thing or two about using your body as a battering ram.

My tip: Eastern Suburbs 26-18

Manly v Canterbury Bankstown

In the round 13 match between these clubs, Manly put the Bulldogs to the sword and a 38-4 score line was to be the catalyst for a crisis at Canterbury. The Belmore club have since fired their coach but suddenly seem to have some spirit under interim mentor Jim Dymock. Will this be enough to go to Brookvale Oval on Sunday afternoon and cause a major upset?

No. The Eagles play a similar style to the old Bulldogs teams and will punish the visitors early and often with a dominant performance up front. The class of their halves then take over and we will see exactly why Manly coach Des Hasler was not too distressed to see Trent Hodkinson leave last year. The Stewart brothers carve it up and end any hopes of a ‘Dogs revival.

My tip: Manly 30-14

Wests v Parramatta

In a recent article in a Sydney metro paper, Jarryd Hayne was labelled as no more than a decent winger or fullback. Apparently, he is simply not in the class of other superstars in his position such as Darren Lockyer, Kieran Foran and Josh McCrone. Assuming Hayne has been told of this attack, he gets his chance to prove otherwise as Parramatta head to Moore Park to play the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

The Eels’ superstar is on a hiding to nothing here: his club’s season is all but over, his backline ravaged by injury and his team on a horribly unlucky losing streak. Just for kicks, Benji Marshall and the red hot Wests Tigers await. Two years ago, when these two teams met in the corresponding fixture, the league universe was treated to a beauty. This time round, the Eels could be subject to humiliation.

My tip: Wests 30-12

Newcastle v Brisbane

Newcastle’s performance across the Tasman last week would have made believers out of most league fans. They were resolute in defence and just lacking a little cohesion in attack, they were also whacked with some ridiculous refereeing decisions but this is not something new to the NRL for season 2011. Jarrod Mullen seems to be hitting one of his purple patches and the Knights back row is hitting everything that moves.

All this points to a Monday Night beauty at Ausgrid stadium as Darren Lockyer and the Broncos come to town. The visitors have weapons all over the park and if given a sniff of the try line, will nearly always find a way across it. Alex Glenn, Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday will be charging at Ryan Stig and Mullen all night and if these young halves can handle the traffic, an upset is on the cards. They won’t.

My tip: Brisbane 23-10

Paully's Picks - Round 23

North Queensland v Brisbane

Plenty of reasons why this match at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Friday night is a must see and is your Match of the Round. A Queensland derby; D. Lockyer’s’ record breaking NRL appearance; the return of Jonathan Thurston and all when we are 3 weeks out from the semis with both clubs sitting inside the top 4. No wonder it will be a sell-out.

Big games like this are typically where the youngsters get a little too excited and the veterans stay nice and calm throughout. This means that kids like Tariq Sims, Ray Thompson and essentially the entire Broncos backline will be jumping out of their skin. A highlight among many in this match will be the opening 20 minutes when young Sims launches himself at everything in a Brisbane jersey, but the visitors launch back when the time is right.

My tip: Brisbane 24-20

Penrith v Wests

Interim Panthers coach Steve Georgallis seems like he is enjoying himself. His team are playing an improved style of football and have won a few games since he took over: but now it looks like he is just messing about whilst the boss is away. With the current Panthers CEO busy writing strongly worded emails to the NRL, Georgallis is enjoying his final weeks before a monster farewell party.

Blooding 19 year old Harry Seijka at number 6, Michael Jennings named at fullback, Kevin Kingston dropped to the bench for rookie Nafe Seluini? Safe to assume the Panthers have nothing to play for anyway, so why not mess around with the ingredients... The Tigers, meanwhile, are settling nicely for another run at the title and will dispatch the Panthers quickly and quietly.

My tip: Wests 24-10

NZ Warriors v Newcastle

In the Round 10 meeting between these clubs, the Warriors pulled off a mini upset of Newcastle at Ausgrid stadium with an impressive defensive performance. Led by Lance Hohaia and James Maloney, the visitors trailed for most of the match before destroying the Knights in the final 10 minutes to win comfortably. Hard to see a different result on Saturday at Mt Smart Stadium.

New Zealand would be aiming for one thing and one thing only; to push for a possible home semi final in week 1 of the playoffs. Newcastle will give it everything but home ground advantage and the Warriors class is too much to overcome. An exciting battle of the halves will take place as Shaun Johnson continues his impressive rookie season, as does the Knights’ Ryan Stig. A cracker.

My tip: New Zealand 24-18

Gold Coast v Melbourne

A tough one for the Titans. Crowds dwindling, their season in complete ruins, their coach stuck in hospital for three weeks, their halfback joining him... and finally, a wooden spoon beckoning to stir this boiling pot of misery. But before the nightmare ends and they can start fresh for 2012, the league leading Melbourne Storm are on their way up the coast to rub salt in the wounds.

Tough to see how the home side will score any points at all against the NRLs best defence especially with a spine that have never played together. Preston Campbell will finish his career at halfback and will turn up bravely, as he always has, in this match on Saturday night; but the Storm tighten their grip on the minor premiership and win for the first time ever at Skilled Park.

My tip: Melbourne 30-8

Parramatta v Manly

The Eels fighting spirit was broken last Monday night. 10 weeks of being bent over a proverbial barrel will do that to a football team and Stephen Kearney’s men simply had nothing left to give. Hard not to feel sorry for Parra, actually, but this is something Des Hasler and the visiting Sea Eagles will not do on Saturday night as they travel out west to continue a 65 year old rivalry.

In fact, fingers crossed that Hasler rips another dressing room door off its hinges, Kieran Foran gets right up in the face of Jarryd Hayne and a few die hard Eels fans still hold a grudge against their former favourite son, Jamie Lyon. Alas, we can only hope for all of the above as the truth will be something closer to a dominant performance by the visitors as they coast to another win.

My tip: Manly 30-12

Canberra v South Sydney

What to make of the Rabbitohs.... well, an outstanding fortnight of footy seems to have convinced bookies that they can head down to our nation’s capital and come away with the biscuits. They are early favourites to brave the frosty and freezing temperatures on Sunday afternoon in Canberra and if the Raiders don’t get too far ahead, this is exactly what the Bunnies will do.

Canberra will get off to a good start but when Chris Sandow and Dave Taylor finally warm up, Souths come roaring back to win and keep their very thin hopes of a top 8 finish alive. Greg Inglis up against Joel Thompson will be a highlight, or it could be a complete mis-match depending on the Raiders’ potential improvement from last week’s debacle in Newcastle. Smart money on a mis-match.

My tip: South Sydney 32-26

St George Illawarra v Eastern Suburbs

So the reigning premiers, in the thick of a losing streak, head back to the scene of their recent capitulation against South Sydney to try to turn their slump around. Wollongong still seems to be a graveyard for opposition teams, especially according to the bookies who have given the visiting Roosters a 16.5 point start. Punters must be convinced that the Dragons can’t possibly lose to the Roosters, can they?

No. Even with Jamie Soward most likely rested from this game, Saints will have enough in them to power to a good lead through their defence and then hold on in the final 20. This is something they have not been able to do recently but against the Roosters, they will not have to worry. Ben Creagh and Beau Scott lead from the front whilst Darius Boyd and Matt Cooper reignite the Dragons left side as Saints win for the first time in a month.

My tip: St George Illawarra 24-6

Cronulla v Canterbury Bankstown

As the sun sets on these two clubs’ 2011 efforts, a review shows they’ve had very similar years. The Sharks and Bulldogs both went on winning runs throughout the season and both believed they were genuine hopes of make the top 8. Their crashes have also been similarly horrific but the Sharks have never been accused by their fans of giving up - even when their fans number only a few hundred.

This Monday night at Toyota Stadium, these brave hundred will again return to club headquarters to witness a battle of two very good forward packs. Tolman and Kasiano v Snowden and Douglas will be a highlight whilst away from the ruck and physicality, Nathan Gardner and Ben Barba put on a dazzling display of footwork to entertain the masses. Dogs at the death.

My tip: Canterbury Bankstown 22-20

Paully's Picks - Round 22

Canterbury Bankstown v North Queensland

To kick off a great night of rugby league in Sydney on Friday, the Cowboys head to Homebush to take on the struggling Bulldogs. With ‘Dogs skipper Andrew Ryan announcing he will be retiring at season’s end, his farewell tour begins and his troops should respond accordingly. However, we’ve seen this all year from the Belmore club.

Motivation has been there but the performance has never followed suit. The visitors are playing, still, without their superstar Jonathan Thurston but this could only mean the difference between winning by 10 and winning by 20. North Queensland will do the former through their willing pack of forwards. Plenty of speed out wide to keep you entertained in this match as Matt Bowen and Ben Barba light it up.

My tip: North Queensland 30-20

West Tigers v St George Illawarra

A replay of last year’s semi final blockbuster to be played under lights at the traditional home of Rugby League in Sydney, the SFS. It does not get any better than this. Well.... it might but one can’t help but get excited. The Tigers attack seems to be coming together nicely at the right time of the season, but it’s a much more mature attack than we’ve seen previously. They are picking their spots.

No doubt these spots will be in the final 20 minutes of this match considering a) the Dragons’ recent performances and b) reports that Saints are being flogged at training in preparation for another finals run. If given any space, the battle of Lawrence v Gasnier and Cooper v Ayshford will be second only to watching Benji Marshall take on the brick wall that is the reigning premiers’ defence. A beauty.

My tip: St George Illawarra 20-16

Melbourne v Penrith

The Storm are simply in a different class here. Their smothering defence is the envy of the NRL and seemingly the most hated in the NRL to boot. Controversial wrestling tactics seem to be an issue, again, as we creep towards the semi finals but it is within the rules and it will drive the Panthers insane this Saturday night at AAMI Park.

If Penrith are to overcome the 14.5 start set by the bookies, their only hope will be to play as if they have nothing to lose and without any pressure. Considering half the club is leaving next year, it will not be much of a stretch for the Mountain Men but unfortunately for Panthers fans, winning this match will be. The Storm strangle them early (figuratively speaking of course) and race away to win.

My tip: Melbourne 20-6

Brisbane v NZ Warriors

A possible September preview and always an entertaining encounter as the Broncos host the Warriors on Saturday Night at Suncorp. Two clubs who have found success in 2011 without defence being their gateway to victory, the Broncos put 46 on the Sharks last week and the Warriors are winners of their last 4, averaging 33 points in attack over this run.

So, with a dry track underneath and plenty of talent and speed across the park, get set for a beauty as the youth brigade of Brisbane get stuck into a disciplined New Zealand outfit. The difference in this one, however, will not be the enthusiasm of the baby broncos but rather the supreme class of Darren Lockyer who outplays Warriors leader James Maloney when the game is on the line in a close one.

My tip: Brisbane 25-24

Cronulla v Gold Coast

Seems as though Sharks coach Shane Flanagan believes it’s time to blood a few youngsters in preparation for season 2012. That or he is foxing before this Saturday night’s match against the visiting Titans. Either way, it might be worth tuning in at 9.30pm on Saturday, for those who won’t be in attendance at Toyota Park, to perhaps introduce yourself to the likes of Ricky Leutele and Tyson Frizell.

For the couple of hundred fanatics who can make it to the old Shark Park, you deserve better than what might be served up here. No doubt Paul Gallen and Jeremy Smith will come out swinging as they play for pride here but there aint much else on the line. Fingers crossed Mark Minichiello continues his form and throws a few of his now infamous right hands at an unsuspecting Shark. Home team gets the nod here.

My tip: Cronulla 24-18

Newcastle v Canberra

The Knights have won 5 of their past 7 and found themselves almost locked in to a final 8 position. More proof, really, that you don’t need to play your best football until June or July to make the semis. Newcastle are certainly doing that as they cruise through the back end of a scheduling dream run. More importantly, they will also benefit from this confidence on Sunday afternoon against the Raiders.

Canberra are now at a difficult part of their 2011 tilt, asking themselves the tough questions that need to be asked by teams out of contention... Where are they going for their end of season trip? Is Mad Monday starting at Shillo’s place or elsewhere? And finally, can they avoid a repeat performance of last years’ Mad Monday abomination? Only time will tell.

My tip: Newcastle 30-16

Manly v Eastern Suburbs

The Eagles took a hit last week. Perhaps only one or two defensive errors and one refereeing error may have cost them victory but as the duchess said to the bishop – them’s the breaks. This week, at fortress Brookvale against the Roosters, they will have to commit at least 10 or 12 defensive errors to lose again. They won’t.

Manly coach Des Hasler will have them chomping at the bit before this match and the visitors will face an onslaught from the opening whistle. Young Sydney firebrand Jared Warea-Hargreaves may come in for some harsh treatment from his old team mates in what should be a physical battle up front, just how the Sea Eagles like it. Brett Stewart a stand out again.

My tip: Manly 28-8

South Sydney v Parramatta

A couple of old Sydney teams who have learnt the harsh lessons about Rugby League this year. For the Bunnies, they’ve learnt the hard way about depth, about injuries and about bad luck. For Parramatta, one simply needs to see that they have lost 6 of their past 7 matches by an average of just over 4 points. So close but nothing to show for it: indeed a harsh lesson.

On Monday night at ANZ Stadium, the Rabbitohs will find themselves falling back down to earth after last week’s remarkable win in Wollongong. The Eels will take full advantage of this distraction and keep the match close until the final whistle, but this time luck falls their way. Jarryd Hayne puts in a blinder and Parra’s defence turns up again. Reni Maitua also a standout for the visitors as he continues his impressive return to 1st grade.

My tip: Parramatta 24-18

Me or the TV?

So Channel 9 boss David Gyngell decides to give some advice to the NRL. Apparently the Greatest Game of All needs more commercial breaks, more stoppages during play to run more advertisements, therefore becoming a more TV friendly product and thus attracting more advertising dollars.

Article here.

Irony? Anyone?

As we finally come to the end of almost 15 years of media ownership of Rugby League and with TV rights to the NRL up for sale in what should be a heated competition, we see one of the front runners announce that in his humble opinion, we should slow down our game and have more commercials. Have we not had enough of being told by media executives how this sport should be run?

Have we not had the game stalled in 1st gear because every decision about the sport has been a reactive one? Or one that was designed to sell newspapers and increase pay TV subscriptions? As Roy Masters recently wrote, this is what the Super League War essentially was, a battle between two cable network broadcasters for ownership of the most powerful TV product in Australia, Rugby League.

Maybe I'm just a jaded fan, but....

David Gyngell, I respect your opinion and you may have a point regarding 15 second commercials during scrum breaks and other pauses during play, but this particular opinion smells like self serving excrement. Having said that, it’s what you are paid to do so really the onus here is on, again, the administrators of Rugby League or as it is now known: The Independent Commission.

If they are to be truly independent, their first step must be to ignore the opinions and sound bites of possible tenders who will say anything. This new governing body of Rugby League will be surrounded by glorified peddlers in the coming months so to arm themselves for the onslaught - here is some advice.

1. Think of the game itself, not of newspapers and pay TV, it will be a breath of fresh air. This means that perhaps we should treat Gyngell's comments as you should the ramblings of a door to door insurance salesman.

2. The people are the shareholders. There is no way any crowd should be less than 15,000 to any game. Do not slow down the game for TV and more to the point, do not listen to the media when it comes to running the game. We fans love the flow of Rugby League and this is what differentiates our sport from any other. That and the collisions. We have the better product with fewer stoppages than Union and stronger athletes than any other code.

3. We do not need 15 seconds of ads to top up the bank account. Marketed wisely, the State of Origin series could be our version of the 'Superbowl' when any commercial spot during the match would be prime real estate. Let's think bigger than reminding people about betting odds for 10 seconds during the footy.

4. Improve the product. Find a resolution to the one thing that slows rugby league down to the point where we are losing 10 seconds every ruck - the Wrestle. It is horrible to watch blokes twisting and turning and holding and squeezing during every set of six. There must be a way to limit the amount of time any tackle should take whilst the ball carrier is not immediately on the ground. Perhaps enforce a 3 second rule. Cap the time from point of contact to when defenders must release to no more than 3 seconds. How many referees do you need to count to 3? This is the one issue (regarding speed of the game) that brings us back to the field.

So, if the above is not a good place to start when thinking about how to market the game better to all our key stakeholders, then a worse place to start would be listening to a television executive. We've tried that and the only winners were Channel 9 and News Limited. The losers from this ownership design seem to be the clubs themselves who simply cannot make a profit without people coming through the gates. True that the next TV contract could bring a windfall for the clubs, so selling the game as a prime time spectacle for advertising is important but not more important than the product itself. We already have a billion dollar product. Slowing it down for another ad break will only ruin it for the fans.
