NZ Warriors v Brisbane
The Warriors will miss Michael Luck, just as we missed the footage of that horrible injury which nobody can seem to find. Spewing. Speaking of injuries, Darren Lockyer remains out of the Broncos line-up for this match and judging by their performance against the Knights last week, Brisbane might be in trouble. Without the direction of the NRL's best player, Ivan Henjak’s side seemed directionless after the first 20 minutes and never recovered.
This must be corrected against a fit and aggressive Warriors team with a halves combination improving every week. Brett Seymour and James Maloney should be too much for the visitors and the New Zealand defence will also be too strong. Seymour could be primed for a big match against one of his former clubs, and the Warriors play their last home game of the season and a farewell to Brent Tate gives them enough motivation to win.
My tip: Warriors 24-10

South Sydney v Parramatta
Two famous clubs meet for the 112th time on Friday night, and two famous clubs who are on the verge of missing the semi finals. With such high hopes entering the season, this late season disappointment for Bunnies and Eels fans will hurt, but they will still gear up for this clash at ANZ stadium. The return of Daniel Mortimer for the Eels and Dave Taylor, possibly, for South Sydney will help both clubs overcome their on field struggles of late.
Speaking of struggling, Souths in particular have not threatened opposition defences much since the injury to John Sutton. The same happens here and a rejuvenated Mortimer joins the Keating brothers and Feleti Mateo to officially end the Rabbitohs 2010 campaign. If Souths play as they did at CUA stadium last week, Jarryd Hayne could outscore them on his own. Eels too good.
My tip: Parramatta 30-12

Cronulla v Gold Coast
The Sharks faithful are hoping for a storybook farewell from Toyota stadium for favourite son Luke Covell on Saturday night in the Shire, and will also be bidding goodbye to one of the NRL's finest in this era, Trent Barrett. We wish them well and Sharks coach Stuart Flanagan should have his troops revved up to the eyeballs for this one which should make for an interesting opening 10 minutes.
Unfortunately for the people of Cronulla, Broadbeach pips Wanda again. The Titans have won their last 5 matches and will enjoy the confidence that this brings as they withstand a barrage of highly motivated Sharks and come away with another win. Greg Bird returns to his old home ground and faces the club that tore up his contract; and speaking of prodigal sons... Matt Rogers and Preston Campbell should also receive a warm welcome. Should be fun.

Canberra v North Queensland
Just a side note.... With Jonathan Thurston, Darren Lockyer and John Sutton all out injured at this time of year, is that evidence that the season is too long? A question for another time perhaps. The questions in this game must be: How much will the Raiders win by? Will the Cowboys fall to pieces when they realise the temperature in Townsville (tops of 27) is a little different to that of our nation's capital (as low as 1)? Will the Raiders players be seeking some sort of revenge on Cowboys coach Neil Henry after he left Canberra on a sour note in 2008?
Answers: Plenty, Yes and Yes.
$1.10 odds for the home side suggest the same and we won’t be tipping anything different. The Raiders forwards do what they do best and bash their way to good field position where Terry Campese and an increasingly impressive Raiders backline does the rest. This match will test the pride of the Cowboys after a difficult season.

Newcastle v St George Illawarra
Match of the Round for mine. The Knights continue to impress when playing at Energy Australia Stadium and reading about their 'Old Boys' history this week leads one to believe they will approach this match expecting to win. The Dragons were well beaten by the Raiders in Canberra last week and are on the road again this week so fatigue will play a part.
Up against a motivated Newcastle squad, this could be dangerous. What makes this match more interesting is the Dragons' defence. They are still the best defensive unit in the NRL and will need to call on this record to have any chance at victory. They will. We predict the Dragons forwards accept the challenge on Saturday night and pave the way for another grinding victory. Brett Morris v Akuila Uate a highlight, if they see the ball.
My tip: St George Illawarra 16-10

Wests Tigers v Melbourne
The Melbourne Storm's season of stupidity is almost over, thank heavens. Credit must be given though, to Craig Bellamy and his players for respecting the game enough to play out the season with integrity, and aplomb. They are sure to do the same at Leichardt Oval on Sunday afternoon but it may not be enough to topple the Tigers at their famous home ground and when they are in good form.
The home side's victory at Parramatta last week suggested that good form is exactly what they have and this will continue. It will be close though as Melbourne's discipline in defence has not wavered, but Benji Marshall and his forwards will be too good. Robbie Farah, in particular, will be extra motivated against the best hooker in Australia and this matchup will be a highlight. Enjoy.

Eastern Suburbs v Manly
The Roosters are now on a 3 game losing streak and under pressure to maintain their position in the top 8. Is it time to start making 'Brian Smith' comments about his history under pressure, or in big games? No it is not. Smith's team was unlucky last week against the Titans, receiving some harsh calls from the officials and Todd Carney having an off night. This probably won't happen again.
So, assuming the Roosters bounce back and perform anywhere near their best, a battle awaits them against an impressive but inconsistent Manly club. A battle they should win through standout performances from Carney and Braith Anasta. They lead the way in attack and the rest do enough in defence to smother the Eagles but only just in what could be an epic encounter - just one of many the Roosters have been involved in this year. Tune in to see 4 of the best young halves in the NRL.

Canterbury v Penrith
What perfect timing by the dogs to announce the signing of Frank Pritchard. One wonders how the fans will react when he is announced at the ground on Monday night. One also wonders if Dogs fans will turn up to farewell Luke Patten in his last home game for the club. Here's hoping they do as there is none more deserved than The General. It seems likely that Brett Kimmorley could also be playing his last home game in what will be an emotional farewell to Rugby League.
Emotional for the fans... but we doubt whether to Bulldogs players can provide the type of performance warranted for this occasion. We predict the visiting Panthers stamp all over any fairytale ending for Kimmorley and Patten and run away with victory late in the second half. Jamal Idris moves back to the centres, again, to create a great matchup against Michael Jennings but Penrith charge towards the finals with a solid win.

Newcastle v Brisbane
Friday night under lights at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle sees the Knights playing for pride and the Broncos desperate to stay in the top 8. Desperation is exactly what they will need to survive without Darren Lockyer this week and after conceding 30 points at home to the Eels; there are a few questions to answer for Brisbane. Can they answer them against the Novocastrians?
Yes. Newcastle have won their past 4 home games dating back to mid June and will play with plenty of spirit in front of their fans but the Broncos forward pack will do enough damage early to create plenty of space for their very young and very quick backline. Brisbane will not have a lot of points in them without their captain but they may not need to. Desperation and defence wins.

Penrith v South Sydney
Both clubs chasing some nature of good form heading into the finals but the difference is, Souths need to find it and find it now. Win or face the prospect of Mad Monday on Russell's farm but I'm sure the bunnies have other ideas as they head west to CUA stadium on Friday night. The Panthers have their own problems. Since their hard fought win against the Dragons six weeks ago, Penrith have won only one game and that win came against the Cowboys.
To make matters worse for the home side, they have conceded 43 second half points in their last two matches whilst scoring only 12. If their home ground is to give them a boost, it has to happen now but we predict the visiting Rabbitohs may have something up their sleeve and overcome the loss of John Sutton to surprise the Panthers in our upset of the week. Sandow v Walsh a great battle of the little men.

This will be more entertaining than any election coverage, guaranteed. The Warriors have a near full strength squad and a set of halves playing with great confidence and control. Manly are coming off a big loss to the Dragons where some would say they were convincingly beaten. Two very big forward packs face off at Brookvale Oval on Saturday with the visitors holding a more consistent record this season. That is enough for me to tip them to win up in the insular peninsula.
The Warriors have continued to surprise in season 2010 after being most pundits tip for the wooden spoon. Defence has been the catalyst for this success and the same gets them home here. Seymour and Maloney lead them around the park to control field position and put pressure on the young Manly halves. Having said all that - I was really just killing time before talking about the fantastic matchup between 'T-Rex' and 'The Beast'. Tony Williams v Manu Vatuvei could shake the very foundations.

The decision for all couch potatoes on Saturday night will be a difficult one so make sure you get your spot on the couch early and take control of the remote. Do not let it go for dear life.
The Storm continue their ridiculous season, at home for the second last time and will be hoping to farewell their departing stars on a high note. The Sharks are in pre season mode, playing to impress new coach Stuart Flanagan and are very long odds to win. At $3.75 they are probably worth a shot if you throw in a ‘either party half-time/full-time double’. Melbourne too good and we predict plenty of niggle between Paul Gallen and Billy Slater.

Actually, they probably won't be thinking about that game too much but the fans will be. The Raiders played will an impressive ferocity that night and bashed the Dragons out of the game. Dean Young and Terry Campese also tried to bash the stuffing out of each other in a memorable encounter.
Many thought, at the time, that Saints were vulnerable after this loss and that prediction proved to be correct. If the Dragons read any of this press, they will be motivated well enough to win this game in very cold conditions in our nations capital. If they don't, their defence will get them home anyway. A great battle between arguably the two toughest front rows you will see, and two of the NRL's best fullbacks on show. Awesome.

Paully's Picks - Round 23
Brisbane v Parramatta
To give you an idea of the Eels season in numbers, they have the exact same points differential as the Canberra Raiders. With all dew respect to the Raiders, this does not sound good for Parramatta fans and simply means the Eels have not lived up to expectations. So should I tip them again? Up against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night - I don't think so, not even if Darren Lockyer is unable to play.
The Eels halves have struggled for the most part this year and last week, their forward pack displayed worrying looks of defeat against the Titans. In their last meeting against the Broncos, Parra scored just the one try and now, they are playing in Queensland for the second consecutive week. Fatigue is sure to set in and the Broncos youth and home ground advantage will get them another win.

Cronulla v Eastern Suburbs
About time the Cronulla Sharks were given a free-to-air television game!! Under lights on a Friday night against a rival Sydney team - this is just the recipe for coach Stuart Flanagan to motivate his troops in front of their home fans. To add some flavour, the visiting Roosters are coming off a tough loss in a physical encounter against the competition leading Dragons and could be a little flat in this game.
Who am I kidding? Brian Smith has coached 3 million first grade games compared to Flanagan’s 3. Hyperbole aside, the Roosters should be up for this and will dominate through their impressive halves and very willing forwards. Cronulla have named Tim Smith to return from reserve grade and based on his form this year, will be a target for the Roosters ball runners. They will find points and find them often to atone for a round 13 bashing by the Sharks.

Snap Review: Great performance from the Sharks. The Roosters would be happy their defence was still tough after a huge game the week before. They will re-load well for the semis.
Gold Coast v North Queensland
Two clubs moving in completely opposite directions. The Cowboys' Grant Rovelli has been under pressure to keep his spot in the starting squad all season and is now asked to take over from Jonathan Thurston at halfback. This is just one of the problems the Cowboys face in this match; a much bigger problem is the fact that their season is over and they have nothing to play for!!!
The Gold Coast Titans seem like a team on a mission and have all the momentum here. It will take a poor performance from their tradesman like forward pack if the Cowboys are any chance. They are not. Scott Prince guides his team around the park perfectly and Greg Bird makes his return from the bench to give the home side all the weapons they need to stomp on the struggling Cowboys.

Snap Review: Grant Rovelli gave a good account of himself and the Cowboys played with plenty of pride. Pity their forwards are a complete mess. Titans finding good combinations after injuries forced a few changes.

An impressive performance last week from the Raiders. It is not often they make a comeback like they did against the Panthers last Monday night and this is a great sign for David Furner's team as they aim for a semi final berth. The visitors will be looking to improve their for-and-against in this match against an out of sorts Bulldogs squad whose season is over.
The Raiders will look to dominate a Dogs forward pack that has not been able to get over the top of many this year, and the same will happen here. The farewell tour begins for Luke Patten and Brett Kimmorley but unfortunately for these two great servants of our game, their careers look to be ending with a whimper, rather than a much deserved bang. Terry Campese and Josh Dugan could have a field day.

Snap Review: The Raiders looked like the better footy team, played like the better footy team and finished like the better footy team. The dogs were completely out of their league in this match and were lucky not have conceded more.

A big test for the suddenly in-form Newcastle Knights as they head across the Tasman in search of their third consecutive victory. Important to note that the 2 wins have come at home and they now embark on a journey to Mt Smart Stadium, a notorious graveyard for visiting teams and even more so against a Warriors team in good form. To add to the Knights difficulties, rain is predicted for the entire week in Auckland.
So, with conditions suiting the home side we predict a solid performance from the Warriors Brett Seymour and James Maloney. They control the tempo of this match and the New Zealanders pull away late to strengthen their grip on a semi final berth and put a huge dent the hopes of the Knights. Akuila Uate faces Manu Vatuvei in a tremendous match up out wide but the Warriors too good in the end.

Snap Review: Great start to my Sunday. Midday kickoff on the couch, prepared for a 6 hour league extravaganza. This is the only good thing about having a TV station run the game... they make it easy to be very, very lazy. Knights tough but Warriors have a touch of class in the halves and Manu out wide.

With four games remaining in their painful season, the Melbourne Storm will either be praying for the end to come quickly, or motivated to win these final games as a farewell gift to the 7 or so players not with the club next year. I'm tipping that the latter will be enough to get them a win against South Sydney on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne and their defence will be the catalyst.
The Rabbitohs injury troubles have added to the equation as they have lost possibly their most influential player in attack, John Sutton. The responsibility now sitting with Isaac Luke and Chris Sandow as playmakers will be a heavy one as the visitors face a tough assignment to keep their finals hopes alive. Snap Review: I believe this is the first correct pick the score for a long, long time. Melbourne too good with Souths missing John Sutton. Souths did not look as bas as i thought they would though. Still a chance at the semis.
Wests v Penrith
The lovely folks in Campbelltown are in for a treat here. Rugby League's heartland will be alive and well on Sunday afternoon as the Penrith Panthers look to find some form against the Tigers. Match of the Round for mine with the Panthers desperation up against the Tigers potent attack, the bookies not able to separate them and both sides with exactly the same win-loss record this year. Anyone's guess and mine is the Tigers.
They would be filthy at losing last week and the Panthers are coming off a short turnaround from Monday night. I can’t think of any other reason but more importantly, this game will feature some of the best talent in the NRL. Jennings, Marshall, Lawrence, Coote, Tuqiri and we haven't even made to the forwards yet. Incidentally, that is where big games are always won and lost and we predict the Tigers forwards do just enough to get over the top of the mountain.....men.

Snap Review: Impressive showing from the Tigers... in fact they dominated in the second half reminded the top 8 teams of how dangeroud they can be. Gareth Ellis superb and Andrew Fifita the destroyer.
St George Illawarra v Manly
A Monday night beauty. Manly put Melbourne to the sword last week in an impressive display and the Dragons were similarly impressive against the in-form Roosters. Good teams peaking at the right time of year and this match will have the pay-TV commentators giddy with excitement. In fact they might be a little too excited and not make any sense at all during the game, just for something different.
All jokes aside, 'Kogarah Oval' will be pulsating with anticipation as Dragons fans gear up for the their most stressful time of year and this match will give a good indication as to whether Manly are the team to knock of the premiership favourites. Happy to overlook the last match between these clubs in round 9 this year as it was mid origin series. This will be another defensive struggle with Manly poking their nose in front at the death. The battle between all 4 centres will be a highlight - Matai v Gasnier and Lyon v Cooper. Awesome.

Snap Review: An impressive performance from the Dragons. In fact this is the best I've seen them play for a while. Nathan Fein and Soward combined well and Trent Merrin was fantastic up front. A huge difference for saints wghen Weyman plays. They are deserved premiership favourites because of an amazing commitment to defence.

To give you an idea of the Eels season in numbers, they have the exact same points differential as the Canberra Raiders. With all dew respect to the Raiders, this does not sound good for Parramatta fans and simply means the Eels have not lived up to expectations. So should I tip them again? Up against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night - I don't think so, not even if Darren Lockyer is unable to play.
The Eels halves have struggled for the most part this year and last week, their forward pack displayed worrying looks of defeat against the Titans. In their last meeting against the Broncos, Parra scored just the one try and now, they are playing in Queensland for the second consecutive week. Fatigue is sure to set in and the Broncos youth and home ground advantage will get them another win.

Cronulla v Eastern Suburbs
About time the Cronulla Sharks were given a free-to-air television game!! Under lights on a Friday night against a rival Sydney team - this is just the recipe for coach Stuart Flanagan to motivate his troops in front of their home fans. To add some flavour, the visiting Roosters are coming off a tough loss in a physical encounter against the competition leading Dragons and could be a little flat in this game.
Who am I kidding? Brian Smith has coached 3 million first grade games compared to Flanagan’s 3. Hyperbole aside, the Roosters should be up for this and will dominate through their impressive halves and very willing forwards. Cronulla have named Tim Smith to return from reserve grade and based on his form this year, will be a target for the Roosters ball runners. They will find points and find them often to atone for a round 13 bashing by the Sharks.

Gold Coast v North Queensland
Two clubs moving in completely opposite directions. The Cowboys' Grant Rovelli has been under pressure to keep his spot in the starting squad all season and is now asked to take over from Jonathan Thurston at halfback. This is just one of the problems the Cowboys face in this match; a much bigger problem is the fact that their season is over and they have nothing to play for!!!
The Gold Coast Titans seem like a team on a mission and have all the momentum here. It will take a poor performance from their tradesman like forward pack if the Cowboys are any chance. They are not. Scott Prince guides his team around the park perfectly and Greg Bird makes his return from the bench to give the home side all the weapons they need to stomp on the struggling Cowboys.

Snap Review: Grant Rovelli gave a good account of himself and the Cowboys played with plenty of pride. Pity their forwards are a complete mess. Titans finding good combinations after injuries forced a few changes.
Canterbury v Canberra
An impressive performance last week from the Raiders. It is not often they make a comeback like they did against the Panthers last Monday night and this is a great sign for David Furner's team as they aim for a semi final berth. The visitors will be looking to improve their for-and-against in this match against an out of sorts Bulldogs squad whose season is over.
The Raiders will look to dominate a Dogs forward pack that has not been able to get over the top of many this year, and the same will happen here. The farewell tour begins for Luke Patten and Brett Kimmorley but unfortunately for these two great servants of our game, their careers look to be ending with a whimper, rather than a much deserved bang. Terry Campese and Josh Dugan could have a field day.

Snap Review: The Raiders looked like the better footy team, played like the better footy team and finished like the better footy team. The dogs were completely out of their league in this match and were lucky not have conceded more.
NZ Warriors v Newcastle
A big test for the suddenly in-form Newcastle Knights as they head across the Tasman in search of their third consecutive victory. Important to note that the 2 wins have come at home and they now embark on a journey to Mt Smart Stadium, a notorious graveyard for visiting teams and even more so against a Warriors team in good form. To add to the Knights difficulties, rain is predicted for the entire week in Auckland.
So, with conditions suiting the home side we predict a solid performance from the Warriors Brett Seymour and James Maloney. They control the tempo of this match and the New Zealanders pull away late to strengthen their grip on a semi final berth and put a huge dent the hopes of the Knights. Akuila Uate faces Manu Vatuvei in a tremendous match up out wide but the Warriors too good in the end.

Snap Review: Great start to my Sunday. Midday kickoff on the couch, prepared for a 6 hour league extravaganza. This is the only good thing about having a TV station run the game... they make it easy to be very, very lazy. Knights tough but Warriors have a touch of class in the halves and Manu out wide.
Melbourne v South Sydney
With four games remaining in their painful season, the Melbourne Storm will either be praying for the end to come quickly, or motivated to win these final games as a farewell gift to the 7 or so players not with the club next year. I'm tipping that the latter will be enough to get them a win against South Sydney on Sunday afternoon in Melbourne and their defence will be the catalyst.
The Rabbitohs injury troubles have added to the equation as they have lost possibly their most influential player in attack, John Sutton. The responsibility now sitting with Isaac Luke and Chris Sandow as playmakers will be a heavy one as the visitors face a tough assignment to keep their finals hopes alive.
