Penrith v Manly
A battle of the halves. The rising Panthers star Luke Walsh with 20 year old Wade Graham by his side, up against Manly's 2010 season saviours, Trent Hodkinson and Kieran Foran. Hodkinson's unbelievable performance last week was an example of how well Manly have recovered from the loss of Matt Orford. In fact it's difficult to say if Orford had the necessary ice in his veins to match his successor’s feats against Souths last week.
Of course, to lay the platform on Friday night, opposing forward packs will be belting the daylights out of each other and winners of this battle invariably win the match. Penrith for mine. Young Tim Grant has improved each week and will be nicely supported by a star studded back row. The Eagles will be ready for this though so tune in to enjoy the show. Panthers at the death.
Man of the Match Prediction: Luke Lewis
Tip: Panthers 18-14
Result: Panthers 40-22
Man of the Match: Michael Jennings
Snap Review:
The Panthers ar simply having a party when they play at CUA. Manly's halves are starting to struggle with weel to week first grade. Hodkinson and Foran will be better for the experience but you can tell they are mentally tired.
St George Illawarra v Wests
Dear Wests Tigers,
Who are you and what have you done with the Wests Tigers. I hardly even know who you are anymore... You seem to be winning close games by grinding out victory with your defence? How dare you!! I thought you were different. I thought you scored an average of 32 points a game and allow the opposition to score 30. I thought that was your game plan!! I also see that you currently 3rd on the ladder. Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
League fans everywhere.
PS - the Dragons will probably have your measure on Friday night at Kogarah Oval because they are the experts when it comes to grinding out a victory. On this occasion I can't see the student out-thinking the master. I am, however, looking forward to seeing your super talented team go up against the best defensive unit in the land. Good luck.
Man of the Match Prediction: Ben Hornby
Tip: Dragons 19-12
Result: Dragons 34-10
Man of the Match: Matt Prior
Snap Review:
I love it when MOM goes to a front rower. Excellent decision Wally Lewis and long may your commentary years continue. The Tigers won't win anything without a halfback. Lui or Moltzen must return for them to be any chance.
Parramatta v Brisbane
Happy to ignore both teams previous performances. Parramatta turn up every few weeks to remind us that they are still premiership threats even after some bad results this season. Brisbane remind us that they still rely on Darren Lockyer despite surrounding him with some young, eager and talented footballers. That makes this one difficult to tip. It's that sort of weekend actually.
Parramatta struggle to back up from a physical Monday Night battle in the Hunter and the Broncos enjoy a weeks rest. Lockyer and Thaiday especially will play with renewed enthusiasm to lead the visitors to an impressive victory. Looking forward to Jarryd Hayne hopefully respond to recent criticism of his form but Brisbane by their teeth, especially if predicted rain comes along.
Man of the Match Prediction: Sam Thaiday
Tip: Brisbane 18-12
Result: Brisbane 10-6
Man of the Match: Corey Parker
Snap Review:
Corey Parker and the rest of the Broncos back row are having career seasons. Thaiday, obviously... but Parker is leading this team brilliantly and is a wonderful example to the baby broncos. Ben Teo, Lagi Setu and other interchange forwards have once again prven that with a larger selection base than every other team in the compeition - they will never suffer through a dry spell of longer than 1 or 2 seasons.
North Queensland v Cronulla
We have reached a point in the season where a bottom of the table clash such as this promises little and will no doubt deliver even less. How can this be, with the best halfback in Australia captaining the Cowboys? If you know the answer to this then please let me know. Something terrible is going on in tropical North Queensland and it aint much better down in god’s country.
Still, I'm a fan of the Sharks' back three. Especially Blake Ferguson and hopefully they will design an attack that showcases his immense talent and impressive speed. Based on the last two seasons, they probably won't and subsequently won't have enough points in them to overcome a home side looking to atone for their huge loss in Melbourne. Matt Bowen slowly getting better and will find his form in this match. The Cowboys win.
Man of the Match Prediction: Matt Bowen
Tip: North Queensland 32-20
Result: Cronulla 20-19
Man of the Match: Paul Gallen
Snap Review:
Unbelievable. JT must be ready to throttle somebody.
South Sydney v Melbourne
A big test for the Bunnies. South Sydney have been impressive this year and made us forget how inconsistent they.ve been in recent times. Souths have shown a renewed sense of belief in themselves, especially in that forward pack. So, as it has been in the past few years, playing against the Melbourne Storm will be a true test of how far they have come.
Souths are up against it here. They play away from their fans with a young team against the experience and talent of the Storm who are playing an aggressive brand of football without any fear of making mistakes. Melbourne will be a dangerous opponent on Saturday night and if Souths do not start with discipline and an aggression of their own, they will find it tough going. It could be a steep learning curve for the bunnies.
Man of the Match Prediction: Billy Slater
Tip: Melbourne 26-16
Result: South Sydney 16-14
Man of the Match: Sam Burgess
Snap Review:
Souths have noe arrived. I hope they get a home semi final. The fans in sydney will erupt into a collective volcano of support as we see woodwork all over the city oozing fans.
Eastern Suburbs v NZ Warriors
A lot to like about the Roosters this year after a horror 2009. Mitchell Pearce is flourishing under the guidance of Brian Smith and Todd Carney joins him in the halves this week with Minichiello moving to his preferred position at fullback. On paper this makes for a great spine and working behind an impressive forward pack should give them great confidence.
The Roosters youth, however, has been their undoing. Inconsistent form has plagued every club this season so hard to criticise the boys from Bondi, but it is difficult to tip them playing across the Tasman, so I won't. The Warriors are led admirably in attack by James Maloney and his young halves partner, Isaac John. Our other prediction is that 6 Roosters players will be admitted to hospital suffering from frostbite.
Man of the Match Prediction: Manu Vatuvei
Tip: Warriors 20-6
Result: Warriors 20-18
Man of the Match: Kevin Locke
Snap Review:
If you have not seen the try that Kevin Locke scored to win the match in the dying seconds - do yourself a favour. The Roosters were in control of this match at every turn and did not deserve to lose. Unbelievable result in horrible conditions.
Gold Coast v Newcastle
Once again, we are faced with a Titans side missing captain, leader and lynchpin, Scott Prince. Gold Coast looked like putting up a big score on the Bulldogs last week before Prince's injury. Without him, they revert to a less exciting and somewhat bullish style of play revolving around ruck domination. Greg Bird is the perfect pivot to lead this attack and the Knights are the perfect team to adopt this style against.
In fact, Newcastle will suffocate against this game plan and with Luke Bailey, Preston Campbell and Ash Harrison back from injury, the 6.5 start given to the Knights seems generous. The presence of Kurt Gidley might ensure the Knights stay close but the Titans will have too much in the end. Good battle between two hard-heads as Mat Rogers sizes up Adam MacDougall, perhaps one last time. Titans too good at home.
Man of the Match Prediction: Preston Campbell
Tip: Gold Coast 30-12
Result: Knights 24-16
Man of the Match: Kurt Gidley
Snap Review:
Without Scott Prince - they just seem to be slightly confused, but that is no excuse for some of the defensive errors committed by the Titans in this match. If they are fairdinkum, they dont drop matches like this to a team coming near the bottom of the ladder, whilst playing them at home.
Canberra v Canterbury
Monday Night in our nation's capital. The people of Canberra will be sick of politicians dominating the news by the end of this weekend and will be crying out for something good and decent to see on their TV's and in morning papers. Rugby League, as usual, will provide for them. Beware though, my friends from Bruce, Belconnen and Barton... the Bulldogs are facing the end of their season and are on their way to town.
The Raiders are slightly favoured at home but this fails to signify how high a mountain the dogs must climb to win this match. Their confidence is shot, their defence embarrassed, their attack predictable and their task almost insurmountable. Almost; let's give them one more shot here to save the season and we predict a furious start from the Dogs, and a fire in the eye we have not seen for some time. Canterbury scrape home led by Ben Hannant and Mick Ennis.
Man of the Match Prediction: Ben Hannant
Tip: Canterbury 19-18
Result: Canterbury 18-10
Man of the Match: Ben Hannant
Snap Review:
Finally picked one. The dogs DID start furiously and Hannant WAS man of the match. pity you cant bet on this unless its a semi or origin.

NSW - Where did it all go wrong?
In the wash up of Queensland’s record 5th consecutive series victory, every possible excuse has been made as to why NSW were beaten so convincingly. In most people's opinions, the team selected was not near good enough and the predictable and pointless attacking of players and coaches involved in the loss has been overwhelming.
These comments by journalists and fans alike are promoting many different reasons for the loss, and what should have been done to avoid it. Let’s address the most common:
1. You can’t possibly have a bench with no props.
Interesting. All I can say about this is that the last time NSW won a series, they went into the match with the following bench:
Craig Gower
Steve Simpson
Steve Menzies
Andrew Ryan
This was the 2005 decider when Andrew Johns played halfback. No specialist front rowers. Granted, the game plan with Johns was to tailor the attack around mobility, but this still suggests that you don't need 4 front rowers as a staple.
2. The halves.
Bloggers, scribes and forum writers have all voiced their opinion as to who should be (and of course who should HAVE been) the halves pairing for NSW in games 1 and 2. One thing that we have learnt from the past is that changing your halves during a series does not work. In game 1 this year, selectors went with a specialist centre to play five eighth and then replaced him with a regular number 6 who not only was completely overlooked for the opener, but named on-field captain for game 2. Fascinating.
Looking at the halves pairings from the last 5 year paints a horrible picture.
2006
Game 1 - Brett Finch / Braith Anasta (NSW win)
Game 2 - Brett Finch / Braith Anasta (NSW loss)
Game 3 - Craig Gower / Mark Gasnier (NSW loss)
2007
Game 1 - Jarrod Mullen / Braith Anasta (NSW loss)
Game 2 - Brett Kimmorley / Braith Anasta (NSW loss)
Game 3 - Brett Kimmorley / Greg Bird (NSW win)
2008
Game 1 - Peter Wallace / Greg Bird (NSW win)
Game 2 - Peter Wallace / Greg Bird (NSW loss)
Game 3 - Mitchell Pearce / Braith Anasta (NSW loss)
2009
Game 1 - Peter Wallace / Terry Campese (NSW loss)
Game 2 - Peter Wallace / Trent Barrett (NSW loss)
Game 3 - Brett Kimmorley / Trent Barrett (NSW win)
2010
Game 1 – Brett Kimmorley / Trent Barrett (NSW loss)
Game 2 - Mitchell Pearce / Trent Barrett (NSW loss)
Every one of these changes (not including dead rubbers) has resulted in a loss. Anyone heard the saying about people who refuse to learn from history? For all those who pushed for changes and sackings - I hope you have now learnt your lesson. For some reason I doubt you have.
3. The Timana Tahu incident.
A team looking for excuses is destined to find one.
4. Kurt Gidley v Jarryd Hayne
A simple message to all those who complained for years that Gidley was not worthy of his position and Hayne should be fullback... Your silence is deafening. Hayne playing fullback did not change a thing as predicted on this blog some time ago. Changes are not the answer.
Finally
5. Darren Lockyer.
We have only heard whispers in the Sydney press that QLD were the better side. Of all the above, this is the only theory with any weight as to why NSW are without a trophy once again. The Black Prince makes everyone around him better and has been a dominant yet subtle force for years. Lockyer is the best of our generation, has consistently been winning games at the highest level and has been an inspiration to all around him for a decade.
So - of all the complaints and debates it is only fair to say that this is the best QLD team ever and one of the greatest rugby league sides ever assembled. Even if the above issues were resolved, it would not have mattered and to rub salt into our wounds, a list of Maroon players and their respective ages reads like a prophecy of pain for years to come.
If NSW pick a young side focused on attack, an older side focused on defence, 4 props, different halves, Robbie Farah or Mick Ennis, change the coach, name a new captain or whatever new plan one might use... it would not have mattered.
As a New South Welshman, this conclusion makes me sick... So I guess it’s my turn to come up with a plan to slay the giant. Perhaps we learn from history as opposed to ignoring it. Laurie Daley was 22 when given the NSW captaincy when he led the Blues to a series victory in 1992. Perhaps we follow this example and then stick with a team so that they might play without fear of being dumped. It just might get them to finally believe in each other.
Last word comes from my mate Rod. A die hard Sharks fan and combined with his passion for NSW, is a man who is living through darker rugby league times than anyone I know. With about 20 minutes remaining in game 2, he looks at me and says, "I can see myself complaining to my grandkids about this exact point in my life".

Paully's Picks - Round 15
Brisbane v Penrith
First leg of a double header in the annual footy extravaganza at Suncorp Stadium. How fitting that a football festival kicks off with two attacking teams who are not afraid to throw the ball around. The Broncos are dangerous with more players returning from injury each week and their youngsters getting used to 1st grade in a hurry. Penrith have a similar crop of youth beginning to flower and their results speak for themselves.
So, who will do all the talking on Friday night? Hard to go past the Broncos on a 5 game winning streak where they have only allowed an average of 12 points in defence. Impressive. The Panthers will miss the 'small man syndrome' anger of Travis Burns and the inspirational leadership of Petero Civoneceva. Look for another big match from the Broncos’ star back rowers as they take on 3 of the best in Panthers trio Waterhouse, Pritchard and Lewis. A mighty affair.
Man of the Match Prediction: Peter Wallace
Tip: Brisbane 26-20
Result: Penrith 22-12
Man of the Match: Lachlan Coote
Snap Review:
Penrith worked hard with their discipline and the results showed. Good hit up metres, good kick chase, good defence. I can't believe Michael Gordon is not signed for next year. Penrith showed they can win without Petero. Also, welcome back Wade Graham. On the nose with Matt Elliott earlier and now coming back from injury, Graham is talented and lets hope he is nurtured.
Canterbury v Gold Coast
The dogs are not enjoying their footy lately. Their traditionally strong defence has lost its aura and their attack is averaging 11 points per game over the past 5 matches. Their chances of turning it around against a resurgent Titans squad look slim to say the least. Greg Bird looks a might better with the return of Mat Rogers and they will work the Bulldogs right sight defence mercilessly in this match. Bird will be a handful, as will Scott Prince as he conjures a magical kicking game to punish the 'home' side for 80 minutes.
The one roadblock awaiting Bird and Rogers will be one Jamal Idris. This battle will be a highlight but there won't be much else to bark about for the boys from Belmore as they struggle to keep pace with the Titans. The mobility of Laffranchi and his back row partners prove too sharp for the dog’s forwards who have been stale in attack. Prince and Preston Campbell could have a field day.
Man of the Match Prediction: Preston Campbell
Tip: Titans 32-12
Result: Titans 25-24
Man of the Match: Mark Minichiello
Snap Review:
If Scott Prince stayed on the field the result could have easily been an embarrassment for the Dogs. Ahead 18-6 early, the Titans lost their way when Prince's hamstring gave up on him but did enough to keep the fast finishing Bulldogs at bay. Barba took advantage of a tiring defence and looked fantastic with the ball - all too late though.
Melbourne v North Queensland
Return leg of a round 8 match won by the Storm 34-6. Difficult to see a different outcome to this one. Jonathan Thurston looks tired when not playing for QLD and the Cowboys seem to have internal problems resulting in a horrible record and rumours of coach/player infighting beginning to surface. The Storm, on the other hand, will enjoy playing with a full squad and seem to enjoy playing footy for the fun of it.
More fun in store for viewers of this match as Cameron Smith renews combinations with Cronk, Slater and friends to rough up the visitors and probably rough up JT in the process. Greg Inglis, if given enough space, could have his way with you centre Will Tupou in a definite mismatch. Keep an eye on front rowers Brett White and Matt Scott as they face each other for the second time this week. Could be fun.
Man of the Match Prediction: Billy Slater
Tip: Melbourne 22-10
Result: Melbourne 58-12
Man of the Match: Brett Finch
Snap Review:
And why not Finch? Brett played magnificently in this match. It's like the Storm had complete disdain and disrespect for the Cowboys defence. They were bursting through the line at will. Watching Brett Finch 'toe-poke' a conversion between the posts could have been the funniest thing i've seen on the footy field for ages. Thanks Finchy for bringing the fun back into footy.
Manly v South Sydney
Great to see both teams with a full compliment heading into this match. Two clubs that have impressed so far this season and let’s hope this old rivalry lives up to it's 124 match history. Fantastic. The bunnies put in one of their worst performances of the season against Manly in round 8 this year and will be keen to atone for this. Before any revenge is considered, Souths must remember that they are heading to Brookvale Oval where Eagles fans will be baying for blood.
The folks from the north side don't care much for the boys from Redfern and will be happy to voice this hatred at every opportunity. Manly's forwards will heed the call and respond in kind. With the visitors forwards is such good form this year, we might see fireworks. Match of the round for mine as both clubs hit hard but home ground advantage carries Manly over the line. Hodkinson and Foran rebound from some recent struggles to get Manly back on track.
Man of the Match Prediction: Jamie Lyon
Tip: Manly 22-20
Result: Manly 26-25
Man of the Match: Glenn Stewart
Snap Review:
Cracking game at brooky. Manly seem to be improving every week. Watching them earlier this year, you wouldnt think they'd be making big comebacks like this. Trent Hodkinson with ice in his veins. Isaac Luke had another blinder and the Souths pack will be brilliant next year when they have spent more time together. How good is Ben Lowe?
Cronulla v St George Illawarra
"We are predicting plenty of 'niggle' in this game. The Sharks will be revved up to the eyeballs by Ricky Stuart and hoping to cause a massive upset in this local derby".
This is how we previewed the last match played between these clubs in round 8 this year. The Dragons won 38-0 without a punch thrown in anger. Very disappointing.
This time round, I implore Ricky Stuart to invoke the ghosts of Les Davidson, the Sorensen family and of-course Dan Stains to re-ignite this war of neighbours in the hope that the 2010 rivalry does not end with a whimper. Unfortunately Ricky looks like being out-coached again by Wayne Bennett as the Dragons defence will dominate and eventually this will reflect on the scoreboard. Saints to run away late.
Man of the Match Prediction: Darius Boyd
Tip: Dragons 30-10
Result: Dragons 22-4
Man of the Match: Ben Creagh
Snap Review:
Creagh does deserve this, but the Saints defence was outstanding. Simply hunting and scrambling as a pack with no mistakes and a relentless amount of energy to keep turning up. The Sharks were valiant but still need more spark in attack. Good to hear no complaints from the Cronulla camp after the Gallen 'try' was not awarded. I dont think it would have mattered.
Wests Tigers v Canberra
This Tigers team looks dangerous on paper. Very dangerous. Having not played in more than two weeks and opening the official "Balmain" leg of their season at Leichardt Oval, it is difficult to convince anyone to tip the Raiders here. Except those wonderfully loyal Raiders fans who travel in droves to support their team at away games. Must be nice to flee the sub-arctic temperatures of our nation’s capital for at least a few hours.
Moving on, the Raiders have been playing with a fair share of commitment and chutzpah this year but will find it difficult to shut down the Tigers who are rolling along nicely since the return of one Robert Lui. Huge wrap on this kid and huge wrap on the Tigers defence over the past 3 matches. The continuation of this good form will see the home side win well and welcome new recruit Wade McKinnon in style. The feisty Raiders may not go quietly though - Joel Thompson v Chris Lawrence a highlight.
Man of the Match Prediction: Robert Lui
Tip: Tigers 32-16
Result: Tigers 18-8
Man of the Match: Chris Heighington
Snap Review:
We love a good defensive struggle. Notice that this is happening more often with the Tigers? Not used to that are we? Perhaps a sign that the entire club is maturing into more than just a group who like to score points. Robert Lui again outstanding but the Wests forwards get all the credit here. Shout out to the Raiders forwards also, they muscled up well.
Newcastle v Parramatta
Reputations on the line here for the Newcastle Knights. Whilst defensive liability Scott Dureau is replaced by Ben Rogers for Monday Night Football this week, the Knights problems protecting their line remain. They allow an average of 75 points per game this season (please note that 90% of statistics on this blog are made up on the spot). Jokes aside, this must be a huge concern for folks in the Hunter as they try to restore some pride against the visiting Eels.
Speaking of the Eels, they seem to be cruising through the season, waiting for the big games to arrive. They will no doubt win enough to make the finals this year and then it’s anyone's trophy. For now, I'm tipping they take the week off for this match and the Knights cause an upset. Kurt Gidley leads from the front and Adam MacDougall's matchup against Timana Tahu will be a highlight. Newcastle bolt from the gates and do enough to hold on.
Man of the Match Prediction: Akuila Uate
Tip: Newcastle 24-22
Result: Newcastle 6-4
Man of the Match: Cory Paterson
Snap Review:
Wet and soggy. I've never seen this many dropped balls in a game of footy but somehow the match was still entertaining. Probably because their was a bit of niggle at the beginning and plenty of drama at the end. No complaints from me. I enjoyed this and also enjoyed seeing Kurt Gidley boot home the match winner. Much deserved.

Tip: Manly 22-20
Result: Manly 26-25
