Gold Coast v Manly
The Titans at $1.25??? Amazing. How can anyone be that confident after watching the NRL this season? The home side’s defence is under pressure and they will be desperate to right the ship in this match. Manly’s discipline, however, will bring the biggest challenge for the Titans to overcome.
They will. Preston Campbell and Nathan Friend combine well with Prince and Greg Bird to put the Titans season back on track. Manly gallant in defeat as they make things very difficult early on for Titans but eventually, Scott Prince the difference. George Rose a standout off the bench for Manly.
Man of the Match Prediction: Scott Prince
Tip: Titans 26-16
Result: Titans 28-14
Man of the Match: Greg Bird
Snap Review:
When the Titans play like this they are a pleasure to watch. Forwards hitting hard and running great lines, backs hitting harder than the forwards and running away for long distance tries. Super entertaining. Having Matt Rogers back in the squad made a big difference to the performance of Greg Bird as well. Experience counts. Credit also to the Titans bench who lifted for this one and collectively made an instant impact.
North Queensland v Canberra
The last time the Cowboys played without Jonathan Thurston, they put the Roosters to the sword in Sydney. In that match, the responsibility of guiding the team around the park was done by committee. At least 5 different players shared kicking duties and first receiver roles that night and this will be the same plan of attack against the visiting Raiders on Saturday night.
It could work, but I’m betting it won’t. The Raiders will kick this match off with a bang and run through the Cowboys defence often. Joel Thompson and Josh Dugan will cause problems for the Cowboys outside backs and if the home side play like they did last week, it will be a long night for fans up in Townsville.
Man of the Match Prediction: Joel Thompson
Tip: Raiders 24-20
Result: North Queensland 16-8
Man of the Match: Matt Bowen
Snap Review:
With the amount of ball the Raiders had in the 2nd half, they should have scored at least 3 tries. I counted 7 or 8 line breaks that all ended in error. The Cowboys played well enough to put pressure on the visitors from the start and that was enough. Josh Dugan out injured made a huge difference to the design of the raiders attack. The Cowboys are 2 from 2 without JT this year. Interesting.
Newcastle v NZ Warriors
Surprising how similar these two teams are. Not only do they have exactly the same points differential, but they are almost identical in a number of other statistical categories. Before I keep writing about stats… does anyone care...? Didn’t think so. Newcastle to win.
Scott Dureau has had a number of defensive lapses this season and will be under pressure to retain his spot. He and Jarrod Mullen must turn up in this match against a willing Warriors side boasting a fit Manu Vatuvei. I say they will turn up, but with home ground advantage the only real difference here. Knights use the amazing talents of Akuila Uate to their advantage and get a much needed victory.

Tip: Newcastle 30-18
Result: Warriors 32-24
Man of the Match: Lewis Brown
Snap Review:
The Newcastle Knights have two very big problems. 1 - their right side defence and 2 - the play of Scott Dureau. Both these issues have not only cost them victories, but they are arguably the two most important parts of a league team - your halfback and your defence. Dureau's defence is at times embarrassing and the Knights defence, as a whole for the entire season so far, is of similar standard. The Warriors, however, came to play and led by James Maloney, were entertaining as always and despite the closeness of the score, looked winners for the most part.
Brisbane v South Sydney
Both teams enter this game on the back of good recent form with plenty of emerging young talent providing the spark. The Broncos head home after 2 solid away wins at Toyota Park and Brookvale Oval with Darren Lockyer almost single handedly responsible for both victories.
This generation’s greatest player will obviously be missed by the Broncos in this match but Souths have their own issues through 5 players missing from their regular 17.... all forwards. A resurgent John Sutton and Chris Sandow will struggle to find space because of this, and the home side’s pack will take full advantage. Corey Parker and Ben Teo the chief opportunists.

Tip: Brisbane 23-16
Result: Brisbane 50-22

Snap Review:
It's not often you see the type of aggression and enthusiasm shown by the Broncos outside of semi final footy. They are on a hot streak and the Bunnies were just a speed hump in this match. Tough to pay this victory though as Souths were missing 3 internationals and a host of others from their starting 17. However keep an eye on the Broncos, they are running wild.
Melbourne v Eastern Suburbs
This game again raises an issue that many league fans have with the scheduling of representative football. A potentially great game ruined by conflicting arrangements does test the depth of all clubs, but one cannot help but wonder what we are missing. The Roosters have not looked good this season without Mitchell Pearce but head into this game as favourites nonetheless.
Usually, I find myself hesitant to oppose the bookies: not today. Todd Carney struggles with the switch to halfback and the Roosters in-turn struggle to punch holes in a committed Melbourne defence. Keep an eye on 20 year old Storm halfback Luke Kelly who captained the clubs NYC premiership winning squad last year. Big things expected from this rookie.

Minute by MInute Monday Night - Round 13
South Sydney v North Queensland - June 7, 2010. ANZ Stadium.
The surface here still looks like a mud pile. Probably means a messy game.
2nd minute - How big is Dave Taylor? I can't believe human beings like this actually exist.
5th minute - Ben Lowe drops a shoulder on Will Tupou, nice hit. Souths really are finding their personality lately: as a team that hits hard and loves the hard work. Lowe's shot has the desired effect and forces an error from the Cowboys.
7th minute - Sam Burgess a handful already tonight. His intention obvious as he runs straight at Jonathan Thurston and draws a million Cowboys defenders trying to cover their captain and defend their line. This leaves a huge gap in front of Nathan Merritt who scores in the corner from the next ruck. Souths 4-0.
11th minute - Welcome back to 1st grade Carl Webb. He gives away a penalty by shoving Dave Taylor whilst Taylor is on the ground - god knows why. Souths almost score from the next set, they have all the ball.
13th minute - North Queensland are in trouble here. Every play run by Souths is finding space. One of these gaps leads to the try line for big Dave Taylor who bounces off a couple of would-be defenders to score. Souths 8-0.
Thought - The Cowboys look to be in trouble early and one wonders about the ramifications of a poor season (which this looks like turning out to be) for coach Neil Henry. Henry resigned his position from the QLD origin coaching staff to focus on his club commitments, the Cowboys have just re-signed JT which would not leave a lot of room to buy further talent.... and they are sitting near the bottom of the ladder. All this combined leads to a bad end of year review from management up in Townsville. They have players back from injury and a solid roster; CEO Peter Parr will want answers.
17th minute - Webb continues his imaginary battle with Dave Taylor, this time charging up to put a shot on the big Rabbitohs 2nd rower. He ends up grabbing nothing. How the mighty have fallen. (more on the shelf life of a league player later)
19th minute - Burgess creating more problems defensively for JT. This time Luke O'Donnell comes over to help out but tries too hard to slow down the ruck. Penalty. Souths are winning the little battles.
23rd minute - Great try saving tackle from Colin Best. The Cowboys denied a good chance to claw back into this match. It’s amazing the number of momentum swings in matches these days. Fortunes can change quickly in Rugby League.
Note - NSW Origin selector Laurie Daley has joined the pay TV commentary team. I wonder what damage he just finished doing to my Origin hopes and dreams.... I would find out in approximately 17 minutes.
26th minute - Chris Sandow puts a nice hit on Anthony Watts. Watts has been a spark for the struggling Cowboys this season but Sandow turns out the light on this occasion.
28th minute - Another good hit up from Taylor. He has been fantastic this year and this backs Russel Crowe's decision to sack Jason Taylor and replace him with John Lang. Lang has brought out the best in many Souths players who were thought to be inconsistent, or not up to 1st grade standard. Is it just me or are the bunnies starting to look like the Panthers premiership team from 2003? Lang has a formula that works.
Beau Champion scores after some good lead up work from everybody. They are playing as a unit and blowing the Cowboys off the field. Isaac Luke misses his third conversion though. Souths lead 12-0.
35th minute - Seeing Willie Mason taking big, powerful hit ups and making line breaks sure does bring back some memories.
37th minute - Souths cough it up and JT has some room to counter attack. Beau Champion (looking a little bit like Ryan Girdler) intercepts the JT pass and runs 40m to score.
It’s amazing how much they are designed like the Panthers 2003 team... the more I think about it.

• Wingers both have toughness combined with speed and are great under the high ball.
• In the halves, Chris Sandow looks more and more like a leader after every match and takes the pressure off a much criticised John Sutton. Ring a bell?
• The back rowers are identical! Powerful running second rowers and a reliable lock who specialises in defence.
• Workhorse front rowers. Roy Asotasi came to Souths with a reputation for line breaks and huge hitting. He has now turned into the prototype experienced front rower who gets through work and has a high Rugby League IQ.
• The hookers - Luke Priddis won the Clive Churchill medal in 2003 and Isaac Luke is on his way to being a Dally M medallist. Very similar styles.
• Finally - no backs on the bench. I love this. Coach Lang refuses to waste an interchange position.
39th minute - Scott Geddes dislocated knee cap; it looks bad. Geddes deserves better after all he's been through but to quote Roy and HG... "rugby league is a harsh mistress". Impressively, Geddes got up to play the ball before looking to the sideline for assistance. Tough bastard.
Halftime - Souths 16-0
45th minute - John Sutton is becoming something special this year. I don't mean to sound like president of the John Lang fan club, but credit where credit is due. It is amazing what a good coach can do for a player. Sutton looks patient, controlled and his mistakes are limited. He is making good reads in defence, kicking is immaculate and he is talking a whole lot more. Lang has not pressured the young star and this calmness is rubbing off not only for the Rabbits number 6, but the entire club.
47th minute - Merritt over. Sutton stands in a tackle and picks his ball-runner perfectly. Gaps all through the Cowboys defence. Nathan Merritt not only coming in field looking for work here but is on the opposite side of the field to his normal wing position. Souths have serious potential this year, and the coming years considering their youth. Souths 22-0.
49th minute - The Bunnies get a repeat set from the restart and are all over the Cowboys here. Luke held up by Watts who is still a shining light for the visitors. Penalty to North Queensland relieves the pressure.
52nd minute - The evolution of Chris Sandow. Perfect kick finds touch after Sandow notices his forwards were getting a bit fatigued. A couple of slow play-the-balls and he makes a simple play he would not have made last year. Impressive.
57th minute - Definite hunger in the eyes of the bunnies. They have a killer instinct tonight - they want more points and want to destroy their opposition. Sutton turns it over though - a rare error for him.
Thought - Souths have been aggressive tonight - some would say ruthless. Isaac Luke just popped JT in the ribs and looked at him with disgust - seemed like he enjoyed it. Little did we know he'd be charged for the next one.
60th minute - Too much possession and too much aggression. Souths continue the demolition as Talanoa goes over after some good lead up work from Colin Best and Wesser. Souths 26-0
63rd minute - Another hit on JT by Isaac Luke. This one was late though and Luke still has that look in his eye. Intent. The referee does nothing, which is one issue... but a bigger question mark here is over the ticker of the Cowboys forward pack. They are getting belted for one, but secondly, they are not standing up for their halfback and captain as he is continually hit late, harassed after kicks and targeted in defence.
66th minute - Another try to the Bunnies. Lazy marker defence by the visitors sees a telegraphed inside ball find open space. Luke scores. Souths 32-0.
72nd minute - Aaron Payne runs from dummy half. I mention this because it’s the first time I’ve noticed Payne running the ball. They really have been blown off the park tonight.
75th minute - Garbage time. Burgess and Taylor on the bench resting after a job well done. Cowboys score in the corner. Souths 32-4.
Thought - Jonathan Thurston looks tired. He was the best player in the world at one stage recently but now faces all the attention and pressure that comes with a tag like this: e.g.
• Gets targeted by opposition forwards in defence and whilst he kicks in general play.
• Faces a long rep season every year.
• This season he has obviously played injured a number of times.
• To top it off his forwards are not sticking up for him.
JT definitely earns his money - and then has to face criticism if he looks at other codes to try and prepare for his financial future. Hard life, but as Roy and HG say, "rugby league rolls the dice of life".
Full time - Credit to Souths tonight, they were relentless. Forwards are living up to their reputation and they are playing an exciting yet controlled brand of footy. They win 32-4.

Paully's Picks - Round 13
Canterbury v Wests
The Tigers are a confidence team and running high on it at the moment. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are running on the stench of failure as their season goes from bad to worse. Cries from the Bulldogs camp this week sound optimistic, which is a good sign for this match and suggests the Dogs will play with desperation. That might be enough to get the win against a rejuvenated Tigers outfit, but only if this match turns into a grind.
Difficult to see Robert Lui and Benji Marshall allowing that to happen. In the Tigers' last two matches, their halves have combined well to organise a potent attack which should continue on Friday night but they will face a tough test with Kimmorley and Ennis attempting to slow the pace down to a standstill. This week the Jamal Idris show visits Chris Lawrence in another fantastic matchup starring the Dogs tearaway young centre. Also, keep an eye on Ennis v Farah as their rivalry continues.

The Tigers win a grind!!!!! This is a massive result for Wests as they win in greasy conditions and out muscle the dogs forwards. Could you say this about the Tigers at anytime in the last 4 years? no way.
Parramatta v Melbourne
Melbourne continues to impress after the salary cap saga; they have a 4 and 1 record since. It's obvious that with so much talent in the squad, they don't need a reason to win games this year; apparently they dont need all their stars on the field either. Last week they scored an easy victory without 3 of their best and this week, they will be given all the motivation they need from the Parramatta faithful. Melburnians will be able to hear the home crowd from Flinders Street.
The Eels, bouncing back from two very poor performances in a row, will ensure hostilities are resumed by turning up for this match but the visitors determination will be too much for a spirited yet out-gunned home side. Cameron Smith returns from injury, GI and Billy the Kid return from a week off and Brett Finch returns to Parramatta Stadium for the first time since his controversial departure in 2009. This all adds up to 'must see TV' as league fans enjoy this Grand Final replay.

Snap Review:
Fantastic game of footy. Why? Because the players took this game personally. Its not often these days where you have players show emotion on the football field. In today's version of loyalty, NRL stars are basically like mercenaries who follow contracts and not clubs. Hard to blame them though. Shelf life of a footballer is limited. Point being when players are emotionally invested in beating the opposition, we see the best brand of league.
Penrith v Newcastle
Another shootout. These two teams love to put on a show with the ball and judging by their recent performances, would much rather run than tackle. Fine with me. With all the talent on show in this match, the 5.30pm timeslot will finally deliver an entertaining match. To add to this, the Knights are boasting the return of Adam MacDougall and James McManus and have moved Captain Kurt Gidley to halfback...Interesting to say the least.

Mitchell Pearce and Jake Friend are finally flourishing under the disciplinary hand of coach Brian Smith and combined with Anasta and Carney must be one of the strongest spines in the NRL. Pearce is the key though and will be targeted heavily by the Cronulla forwards in this match.

Impressive. The highly praised Manly halves are starting to show their youth... it's a long season fellas.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs continue their roller coaster ride of a season, this time against the Cowboys in a potential ripper. Roy Asotasi catches up with old friend Willie Mason in just one of many juicy matchups in the forwards. If this match does turn into a battle of big men, you can't go past Souths on Monday night. I won't be going past them this time.
Isaac Luke has been outstanding this year and his great form will continue against a visiting side struggling for form and desperate to climb out of the cellar. No excuses exist anymore for the Cowboys who have lost their past two matches with Thurston, Payne and Bowen all available. These three must perform and keep the Rabbitohs big men turned around if the Cowboys are to be any chance. Smart money says they won't. The Tigers are a confidence team and running high on it at the moment. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are running on the stench of failure as their season goes from bad to worse. Cries from the Bulldogs camp this week sound optimistic, which is a good sign for this match and suggests the Dogs will play with desperation. That might be enough to get the win against a rejuvenated Tigers outfit, but only if this match turns into a grind.
Difficult to see Robert Lui and Benji Marshall allowing that to happen. In the Tigers' last two matches, their halves have combined well to organise a potent attack which should continue on Friday night but they will face a tough test with Kimmorley and Ennis attempting to slow the pace down to a standstill. It's obvious that with so much talent in the squad, they don't need a reason to win games this year; apparently they dont need all their stars on the field either. Last week they scored an easy victory without 3 of their best and this week, they will be given all the motivation they need from the Parramatta faithful. Melburnians will be able to hear the home crowd from Flinders Street.
The Eels, bouncing back from two very poor performances in a row, will ensure hostilities are resumed by turning up for this match but the visitors determination will be too much for a spirited yet out-gunned home side. Cameron Smith returns from injury, GI and Billy the Kid return from a week off and Brett Finch returns to Parramatta Stadium for the first time since his controversial departure in 2009.
